Abstract We systematically analyze the large-N limit of the superconformal index of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 superconformal theories having a quiver description. The index of these theories is known in terms of unitary matrix integrals, which we calculate using the recently-developed technique of elliptic extension. This technique allows us to easily evaluate the integral as a sum over saddle points of an effective action in the limit where the rank of the gauge group is infinite. For a generic quiver theory under consideration, we find a special family of saddles whose effective action takes a universal form controlled by the anomaly coefficients of the theory. This family includes the known supersymmetric black hole solution in the holographically dual AdS5 theories. We then analyze the index refined by turning on flavor chemical potentials. We show that, for a certain range of chemical potentials, the effective action again takes a universal cubic form that is controlled by the anomaly coefficients of the theory. Finally, we present a large class of solutions to the saddle-point equations which are labelled by group homomorphisms of finite abelian groups of order N into the torus.

Abstract In this work, we study a generalization of the coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with U(1) charge conservations. The model contains two copies of the complex SYK model at different chemical potentials, coupled by a direct hopping term. In the zero-temperature and small coupling limit with small averaged chemical potential, the ground state is an eternal wormhole connecting two sides, with a specific charge Q = 0, which is equivalent to a thermofield double state. We derive the conformal Green’s functions and determine corresponding IR parameters. At higher chemical potential, the system transit into the black hole phase. We further derive the Schwarzian effective action and study its quench dynamics. Finally, we compare numerical results with the analytical predictions.

We investigate a zero-dimensional Hermitian one-matrix model in a triple-well potential. Its tree-level phase structure is analyzed semiclassically as well as in the framework of orthogonal polynomials. Some multiple-arc eigenvalue distributions in the first method correspond to quasiperiodic large-N behavior of recursion coefficients for the second. We further establish this connection between the two approaches by finding three-arc saddle points from orthogonal polynomials. The latter require a modification for nondegenerate potential minima; we propose weighing the average over potential wells.

We calculate an effective action and measure induced by the integration over the auxiliary field in the matrix model recently proposed to describe IIB superstrings. It is shown that the measure of integration over the auxiliary matrix is uniquely determined by locality and reparametrization invariance of the resulting effective action. The large-N limit of the induced measure for string coordinates is discussed in detail. It is found to be ultralocal and, thus, is possibly irrelevant in the continuum limit. The model of the GKM type is considered in relation to the effective action problem.

Following the ideas of Ref. 3, to account for instability of 2-D black hole solution, we discuss possible imaginary string-loop corrections to the coefficient at the Einstein term in string effective action (EA). In closed bosonic string theory, such corrections appear because of the tachyon contribution to the integration measure over the moduli. In superstring theory, several possible sources of complex one-string-loop contributions to the EA are considered. It is argued that none of them can account for complex corrections to the Einstein term in the effective action.

Abstract We briefly review some of the important developments in the last decade in the theory of multiple M2-branes and $\text{AdS}_4/\text{CFT}_3$ correspondence. Taking the examples of the superconformal index, free energy on $S^3$, and entropy of charged black holes, we illustrate how the large-$N$ limit was studied and the correspondence was checked.

The KdV and modified KdV integrable hierarchies are shown to be different descriptions of the same 2D gravitational system — open-closed string theory. Non-perturbative solutions of the multicritical unitary matrix models map to non-singular solutions of the 'renormalization group' equation for the string susceptibility, [Formula: see text]. We also demonstrate that the large-N solutions of unitary matrix integrals in external fields, studied by Gross and Newman, equal the non-singular pure closed-string solutions of [Formula: see text].

In a (2 + 1)-dimensional pure LGT at finite temperature the critical coupling for the deconfinement transition scales as βc(nt) = Jcnt + a1, where nt is the number of links in the "timelike" direction of the symmetric lattice. We study the effective action for the Polyakov loop obtained by neglecting the spacelike plaquettes, and we are able to compute analytically in this context the coefficient a1 for any SU(N) gauge group; the value of Jc is instead obtained from the effective action by means of (improved) mean field techniques. Both coefficients have already been calculated in the large N limit in a previous paper. The results are in very good agreement with the existing Monte Carlo simulations. This fact supports the conjecture that, in the (2 + 1)-dimensional theory, spacelike plaquettes have little influence on the dynamics of the Polyakov loops in the deconfined phase.

The color–flavor transformation is applied to the U (Nc) lattice gauge model, in which the gauge theory is induced by a heavy chiral scalar field sitting on lattice sites. The flavor degrees of freedom can encompass several "generations" of the auxiliary field, and for each generation, remaining indices are associated with the elementary plaquettes touching the lattice site. The effective, color–flavor transformed theory is expressed in terms of gauge singlet matrix fields carried by lattice links. The effective action is analyzed for a hypercubic lattice in arbitrary dimension. The saddle points equations of the model in the large-Nc limit are discussed.
