AbstractMicroalgae, a popular source of food and bioactive compounds, accumulate antioxidants in response to culture condition stresses. Using a factorial design (3 × 3), the effect of light, temperature, and nitrogen level on chlorophyll and carotenoids, total protein, total phenolic, ascorbate and glutathione content, and enzyme (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD)) activities in Dunaliella tertiolecta was studied. Data were analysed using Design of Experiments (DoE), and recommendations are made for optimum cultivation conditions to achieve the highest antioxidant content (phenolics, ascorbate and glutathione) or enzyme (CAT, SOD, and POD) activities. This is the first study to apply three levels of three factors during cultivation to tune Dunaliella tertiolecta for optimal antioxidant production.

Heavy metal pollution is a significant environmental problem with negative potential impacts on agriculture and human health. In this study, calluses were obtained by using in vitro germinated hypocotyl explants of pepper seedlings and cell suspensions were prepared from these calluses. The effect of silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution added in different concentrations and times to cell suspension cultures of pepper on total protein and total phenolic compound amounts, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase enzyme activities were analysed. Total protein and total phenolic amounts, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase enzyme activities were detected by spectrophotometric methods. When the effects of silver metal on pepper plant were examined, it was determined that silver metal reduced the total protein and phenolic content in the pepper plant cells and especially at higher concentration, in the first 24 hour period, antioxidant enzyme activities increased.

Abstract The aim of the this study was to evaluate the effects of fresh, dried and freeze-dried Centaurea depressa M. Bieb. (Asteraceae) on the oxidant and antioxidant status of the model organism D. melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae) experimentally. The study was carried out from 2016 to 2019, and plant leaf extracts (0-50 mg/l) were added to insect standard artificial diets. The total protein, protein carbonyl content and glutathione-S-transferase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were quantified at the insect’s third larval stage. Our data showed that protein carbonyl content varied from 2.70 nmol/mg protein in the control group to 59.11 nmol/mg protein in the group fed with fresh leaf extract signifying induction of oxidative stress. All extracts increased the levels of all antioxidant enzymes and decreased the amounts of total protein. Meanwhile, the group fed with the freeze-dried extract showed no significant difference in the levels of total protein and protein carbonyl content except at the 50 mg/l concentration of the extract. Moreover, this group had superoxide dismutase and catalase activities 4 to 5 times higher than in the control group. In conclusion, induction of oxidative stress indicates that the fresh form of C. depressa leaves may have potential as a natural pesticide, whereas induction of endogenous antioxidant enzymes by the freeze-dried extract suggest its potential as an antioxidant.

ABSTRACT Herbicide selectivity in paddy rice varies in several aspects, among which are the environmental conditions. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of herbicide application and total plant submersion on morphological and biochemical changes in paddy rice. Total chlorophyll and carotenoids, catalase activity, ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, total phenolic content, lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide levels were assessed. Leaf samples were collected 24 hours and 7 days after the application of water regimes. The results observed in the first experiment show that cultivars Puitá INTA CL, IRGA 417 and IRGA 422 CL are more tolerant to total submersion. The most sensitive cultivars are IRGA 424, BRS Querência, EPAGRI 108 and BRS Taim. In general, cultivar Puitá INTA CL had lower oxidative damage than BRS Querência when under submersion. To eliminate excess free radicals, BRS Querência had increased activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) than Puitá INTA CL under submersion. Formulations with imazethapyr + imazapic and imazapyr + imazapic caused greater reduction in the total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents at 7 days after the establisment of water regimes (DAT). Therefore, the data show that exposing cultivars to total submersion and herbicides increased oxidative stress as well as induced changes in the activities of antioxidant enzymes.
