AbstractPurpose There is growing awareness that the employer plays an important role in preventing early labor market exit of workers with poor health. This systematic review aims to explore the employer characteristics associated with work participation of workers with disabilities. An interdisciplinary approach was used to capture relevant characteristics at all organizational levels. Methods To identify relevant longitudinal observational studies, a systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO and EconLit. Three key concepts were central to the search: (a) employer characteristics, (b) work participation, including continued employment, return to work and long-term work disability, and (c) chronic diseases. Results The search strategy resulted in 4456 articles. In total 50 articles met the inclusion criteria. We found 14 determinants clustered in four domains: work accommodations, social support, organizational culture and company characteristics. On supervisor level, strong evidence was found for an association between work accommodations and continued employment and return to work. Moderate evidence was found for an association between social support and return to work. On higher organizational level, weak evidence was found for an association between organizational culture and return to work. Inconsistent evidence was found for an association between company characteristics and the three work outcomes. Conclusions Our review indicates the importance of different employer efforts for work participation of workers with disabilities. Workplace programs aimed at facilitating work accommodations and supervisor support can contribute to the prevention of early labor market exit of workers with poor health. Further research is needed on the influence of organizational culture and company characteristics on work participation.

Abstract The paper addresses issues regarding the current balance between spirituality and administration in different church denominations using an interdisciplinary approach which combines management science and theology. It presents a comparative study of organizational culture of the Roman Catholic Church, a Lutheran church, and a Reformed church with the use of the questionnaire based on the Competing Values Framework (Cameron/Quinn) and qualitative interviews with leading persons in church. The authors discuss the findings from two different but complementary perspectives: in relation to the four types of organizational cultures in the Cameron/Quinn framework, and as a result of the specific denominational semantics represented in the questionnaire used for the study. The results show how the question of modernity is reflected in organizational culture of churches, and how deeply the respondents’ perception of church is influenced by inherent normativity. One of the central conclusions is that religiously rooted normativity serves as an instrument of balancing the administrative and the spiritual in church.

It is hypothesized that mergers increase turnover to nonemployment among employees with poor health and increase turnover to employment outside of the hospital sector among healthy employees. Discrete-time survival analyses show that mergers increase turnover within the hospital sector for all employ- ees, regardless of health. Turnover to other sectors and out of work does not increase. Possible explanations for the limited turnover out of the sector associated with mergers are aspects of the Norwegian labor market such as the institution of employee participation, low unemployment, and labor shortages within hospitals. </span></p></div></div></div>

Zusammenfassung Arbeitsmarkt(re)integration von gesundheitlich eingeschränkten Mitarbeiter*innen findet hauptsächlich in Betrieben statt. Allerdings nimmt die Stay at- und Return to Work-Forschung die spezifischen Strukturen von betrieblicher Wiedereingliederung nur randständig in den Blick. Fokussiert werden hauptsächlich formale Verfahren wie das betriebliche Wiedereingliederungsmanagement und schematisch beschriebene Akteurskonstellationen. Kurzfristige Absprachen im Arbeitsalltag, Koordination außerhalb von eingefahrenen Pro­zeduren und bewusstes Abweichen von Vorschriften werden so außer Acht gelassen. Daher bleiben auschlaggebende Gelingensbedingungen betrieblicher Wiedereingliederung unerkannt. Wir adressieren diese Forschungslücke und plädieren für eine genuin organisationsoziologische Perspektive auf betriebliche Arbeitsmarkt(re)integration. Wir nutzen das theoretische Konzept der organisationalen Routinen und können so ein Ablaufmodell gelingender Integrationsroutinen entwickeln. Abstract: Integration as an Organizational Routines Labor market (re)integration of employees with reduced earning capacity mainly takes place in companies. Nevertheless, previous research has disregarded companies as specific environments for reintegration. The research focus stays on formal cooperate health care procedures and schematically described actor constellations. Deliberate deviations from these formal procedures and the complex informal coordination of integration in everyday working life, as well as their success conditions, thus remain hidden. To address this unsolved task, we argue for a genuine organizational-sociological perspective on company-based labor market (re)integration. Subsequently, we introduce a model of successful integration processes based on the concept of organizational routines.

Objective.To examine to what extent disabling osteoarthritis (OA), leading to a prolonged sickness absence (SA), interferes with work participation and shortens working life–years.Methods.A total of 4704 wage earners aged 30 to 59 years, whose SA due to OA started in 2006, were followed until October 31, 2014. Kaplan–Meier analysis was used to plot sustained (at least 28 consecutive days) return-to-work curves. The associations of potential determinants with early exit from paid employment were examined applying Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. Years expected to be spent in different work participation statuses until statutory retirement age were estimated based on daily work participation statuses using adapted Sullivan method.Results.Persons with knee OA showed the fastest, and persons with hip OA the slowest, sustained return to work. Although most participants typically were at work during the first year of followup, a considerable proportion was permanently retired. Male sex, older age, low education, long initial SA, and having not returned to work sustainably, as well as receiving vocational rehabilitation, predicted early exit from paid employment during the followup. Overall, only 45–53% of potential working life–years were estimated to be spent at work, being highest for the oldest age group.Conclusion.Our study showed a considerable effect of OA on work participation and working life duration. Clinicians should avoid prescription of long SA or temporary work disability due to OA without a clear treatment or return-to-work plan.
