Menetus dilatatus (Gould, 1841) has been found in July 2005 in the Lipno Reservoir (Bohemian Forest = Šumava Mts., Southern Bohemia, Czech Republic) at 12 particular sites. This locality is about 80 km south of the nearest known locality of Menetus dilatatus and more than 160 km south of the Elbe Lowland where Menetus dilatatus occurs in many sites including the Elbe River. The altitude of the Lipno Reservoir reaches 725 m a.s.l. and is the highest known altitude of Menetus dilatatus in the Czech Republic.

Abstract The paper deals with river training works built on the reach of the Elbe River between the city of Ústí nad Labem (CZ) and the Czech/German border. Downstream of the Ústí nad Labem, the Elbe in the Czech Republic and in Germany has only been made navigable through river training measures without building weirs. The goal of river training for watercourse navigability is to attain the required waterway parameters through fairway adjustments. This is primarily achieved through channel dredging and the construction of training dams to concentrate the water flow into a narrower but deeper main channel. The paper describes the historical development of river training works during the period from the Middle Ages to the present day. Initially, such works were not meant as part of a unified conceptually designed system of measures. Instead, they were local initiatives aimed to remove natural obstacles from the river bed and to build facilities and structures to aid navigation. Systematic regulation works along the Czech and German sections of the Elbe only started in the early 19th century. The research was focused on studying the original project documents and documentation of the actual design of the training dams since 1894. This historical design documentation was digitised and projected into the maps in the Czech JTSK local coordinate system through the use of advanced geographic information system (GIS) methods. The final atlas of river training works on the Elbe-Vltava Waterway (EVW) along the lower Elbe in the Czech Republic is the first of its kind, utilising geographic information systems to document the locations of technical structures built since the early 19th century in the Elbe River bed in order to make the river navigable and maintain its navigability. The collection of maps also documents the development of the river training works in time based on map data obtained from digitised design documentation from the 19th and 20th centuries, historical aerial photographs dated 1930–1946 and 1950–1964, and present-day maps and orthophotomaps of the Elbe section in question. The atlas of the Elbe-Vltava Waterway river training works is publicly available via a web-based application. The maps are a result of original research and offer a synthesis of interactions between the existing technical structures, the sediment regime of the Elbe and sites that are subject to environmental protection. The research was conducted as part of project no. DG18P02OVV004 entitled “Documentation and presentation of technical cultural heritage along the Elbe-Vltava Waterway” within a support programme for applied research and experimental development of national and cultural identity, funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

The aim of the presented article is to evaluate the impact of climate change on the sugar content of grapes in the Czech Republic during the period 2000–2019 through selected indicators on the basis of available secondary sources. Attention is focused on the developments in both the main wine-growing regions of Moravia and Bohemia. In the field of viticulture and wine-growing, the sugar content of grapes, as a basic parameter for the classification of wines, plays an important role. In the Czech Republic, the average sugar content of grapes has had a constantly growing trend. This trend is evident both in the wine-growing region of Bohemia and in the wine-growing region of Moravia. The impact of climate change, especially the gradual increase of average temperatures in the growing season, cannot be overlooked. It greatly affects, among other things, the sugar content of grapes. Calculations according to the Huglin Index and the Winkler Index were used to determine the relationship between climate and sugar content. These indexes summarize the course of temperatures during the entire vegetation period into a single numerical value. The results show that both indexes describe the effect of air temperature on sugar content in both wine regions of the Czech Republic in a statistically significant way. The Huglin Index shows a higher correlation rate. The Winkler Index proved to be less suitable for both areas. Alternatively, the Winkler Index calculated for a shorter growing season was tested, which showed a higher degree of correlation with sugar content, approaching the significance of the Huglin Index.

The patterns of morphological variation and distribution of the rare Central European endemic Spergularia echinosperma were investigated. Morphometric analyses revealed the existence of two distinct morphotypes differing each other mainly in seed color, which is either brown or black. Other differences are in density of the seed surface papillae, height and shape of the papillae, seed width, pedicel/capsule and internode/leaf ratios, and leaf length. A geographic separation of the morphotypes also exists. The black-seeded morphotype occurred nearly exclusively in drained fishponds in the south-western part of the Czech Republic, the brown-seeded morphotype was found in drained fishponds in the eastern part of the Czech Republic and in alluvial pools and river deposits of the Elbe River (Germany). We hypothesize that the black-seeded morphotype may have been indigenous in former natural lakes which were widespread in the SW-Czech Republic and they were frequently transformed into fishponds. The brown-seeded morphotype may have its origin in river alluvia of the Elbe (Germany) and possibly also of other rivers in the Czech Republic. Since the two morphotypes are morphologically and geographically well separated, we propose to describe the brown-seeded morphotype as a new subspecies for science, S. echinosperma subsp. albensis subsp. nov.

The record of the North-American gastropod Menetus dilatatus in the Southern Bohemia is mentioned in this paper. This finding is more than 80 km distant from known localities in the Elbe River Lowland and is the first one in the Southern Bohemia. This species was found in the mapping field for faunistic grid mapping No. 6551 (see Fig. 1) in the Otava River in the Orlík Dam Lake by diving in the water depth of ca. 2 m.
