AbstractIn this work, our goal is to analyze the use of the Cross Recurrence Plot (CRP) and its quantification (CRQA) as tools to detect the possible existence of a relationship between two systems. To do that, we define three tests that are a bivariate extension of those proposed by Aparicio et al. (Aparicio, T., E. Pozo, and D. Saura. 2008. “Detecting Determinism Using Recurrence Quantification Analysis: Three Test Procedures.” Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization 65: 768–787, Aparicio, T., E. F. Pozo, and D. Saura. 2011. “Detecting Determinism Using Recurrence Quantification Analysis: A Solution to the Problem of Embedding.” Studies in Nonlinear Dynamics and Econometrics 15: 1–10) within the context of the Recurrence Quantification Analysis. These tests, based on the diagonal lines of the CRP, are applied to a large number of simulated pairs of series. The results obtained are not always satisfactory, with problems being detected specifically when the series have a high degree of laminarity. We study the identified problems and we implement a strategy that we consider adequate for the use of these tools. Finally, as an example, we apply this strategy to several economic series.

The wind is the main factor to influence the propagation of gas in the atmosphere. Therefore, the wind signal obtained by anemometer will provide us valuable clues for searching gas leakage sources. In this paper, the Recurrence Plot (RP) and Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) are applied to analyze the influence of recurrence characteristics of the wind speed time series under the condition of the same place, the same time period and with the sampling frequency of 1hz, 2hz, 4.2hz, 5hz, 8.3hz, 12.5hz and 16.7hz respectively. Research results show that when the sampling frequency is higher than 5hz, the trends of recurrence nature of different groups are basically unchanged. However, when the sampling frequency is set below 5hz, the original trend of recurrence nature is destroyed, because the recurrence characteristic curves obtained using different sampling frequencies appear cross or overlapping phenomena. The above results indicate that the anemometer will not be able to fully capture the detailed information in wind field when its sampling frequency is lower than 5hz. The recurrence characteristics analysis of the wind speed signals provides an important basis for the optimal selection of anemometer.

In this paper, the frequency broadband effect in vibration energy harvesting was studied numerically using a quasi-zero stiffness resonator with two potential wells and piezoelectric transducers. Corresponding solutions were investigated for system excitation harmonics at various frequencies. Solutions for the higher voltage output were collected in specific branches of the power output diagram. Both the resonant solution synchronized with excitation and the frequency responses of the subharmonic spectra were found. The selected cases were illustrated and classified using a phase portrait, a Poincaré section, and recurrence plot (RP) approaches. Select recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) measures were used to characterize the discussed solutions.

AbstractThe paper discusses the problem of possibility of the detecting surface defects in carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) materials on the basis of the milling time series. First, the special defects in the hole-shaped with various depth were made. Next, the cutting forces are measured during the milling machining. Finally, the recurrence plot and quantification analysis was applied. The obtained results show that the depth defect influences the selected recurrence quantifications, which can be used as the simple defect indicators. The conducted research allow to determine the percentage share of the detectable defects. The novelty of the work and an unresolved problem is the selection of recurrence quantifications with the simultaneous use of them to detect the size of defects in carbon fibre reinforced plastics.

We investigated how the construction of the Sobradinho dam and reservoir affected the daily streamflow of the São Francisco River, using the method of Recurrence plot (RP) and Recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) which serves to visualize and quantify the recurrences of the states in the phase space of the dynamic system. We analyzed daily streamflow time series recorded in the fluviometric station Juazeiro that is located downstream of the Sobradinho dam, for the periods before (1943-1972) and after (1980-2009) the dam construction. We observed that in the natural regime, before the dam construction, the streamflow dynamics shows characteristics of periodic and quasi-periodic process, indicated by the checkerboard patterns in RP. After the dam construction, streamflow dynamics exhibit sudden changes indicated by white bands in RP, and become less predictable, less complex, and remain s in certain laminar states for shorter periods, indicated by the decrease of the values of RQA parameters.

Discrete defects in thick composites are difficult to detect for the small size and the structure noise that appears in multilayer composites. In this paper, a nonlinear method, called recurrence analysis, has been used for characterizing discrete defects in thick section Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) with complex lay-up. A 10 mm thick CFRP specimen with nearly zero porosity was selected, and blind holes with different diameters were artificially constructed in the specimen. The second half of the backscattered signal was analyzed by recurrence analysis for areas with or without a defect. The recurrence plot (RP) visualized the chaotic behavior of the ultrasonic pulse, and the statistical results of recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) characterized the instability of the signal and the effect of defects. The results show that the RQA variable differences are related to the size of blind holes, which give a probable detection of discrete geometric changes in thick multilayer composites.

An analysis of the Kelantan River flow for the period 2000 to 2014 and its predictive validity have been undertaken by utilizing recurrence plot (RP), recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), and auto regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA). The study presents the analysis results for flood detection and prediction of future values on a holdout sample of the 2014 data. The ARIMA model provides a better forecast when compared with the RQA predictive model. The analysis of the daily river flow dynamics reveals an abrupt change in the system and the detection of an attractor with outliers indicating higher series values; an indication of an early warning Models’ performance was based on the RMSE criterion and ARIMA model predicted a better result. The chaotic nature of the time series has also been investigated. This study could be used in understanding disastrous consequences of a river flooding.
