Effects of soil flooding, sunlight and herbivory on seedlings of Annona glabra and Pachira aquatica in a tropical swamp

An experiment was conducted with the aim to analyze the effects of soil flooding and leaf position on net primary productivity and whole plant carbon balance of Annona glabra L. (Annonaceae) seedlings, a highly flood-tolerant tree, native to the tropical Americas. All seedlings survived a period of 56 days of flooding without symptoms of stress. Flooding induced significant increments in root, stem and whole-plant biomass (P <0.01), and in the root:shoot mass ratio (P <0.05). Measurements of leaf gas exchange were conducted at days four, 11, 18 and 56 after flooding, on the first (L1), fourth (L4) and seventh (L7) fully expanded leaves from the apex of each seedling. The mean values of stomatal conductance to water vapour (g s) and net photosynthetic rate (A) in the control seedlings were around 0.26 mol m-2s-1 and 8.8 µmol m-2s-1, respectively. Significant reductions (P <0.05) in A were observed from L1 to L7 in controls at all four days of measurements. Reductions in A with increasing leaf age also ocurred for flooded plants, but only at days four and 18. Flooding induced significant changes in gs (P <0.05), reaching 65% of controls at day four but 152% of controls at day 56. Based on the results we conclude that the high survival and growth rates of A. glabra seedlings are directly related to the capacity to mantain a high stomatal conductance and net photosynthetic rate under soil flooding.

A new ent-kaurane glycoside, annoglabasin H (1), and three known ent-kauranes, annoglabasin E (2), annoglabasin B (3), and 19-nor- ent-kaurent-4-ol-17-oic acid (4) were isolated from the fruits of Annona glabra. Their structures were determined by the combination of spectroscopic and chemical methods, including 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy, as well as by comparison with the NMR data reported in the literature. The cytotoxic activities of these compounds were evaluated on four human cancer cell lines, LU-1, MCF-7, SK-Mel2, and KB. Compound 1 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity on all tested human cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 3.7 to 4.6 μM.

A micropropagação de anonáceas poderá contribuir para a obtenção de plantios mais homogêneos e a inserção de novas espécies em sistemas produtivos. Entretanto, plantas cultivadas in vitro freqüentemente exibem alterações anatômicas e sua quantificação poderá auxiliar na obtenção de protocolos de cultivo mais eficientes. Realizou-se neste trabalho o estudo comparativo da anatomia foliar de seis espécies de anonáceas cultivadas in vitro e em casa de vegetação. Annona coriacea foi a única espécie que não apresentou variação na densidade e na dimensão dos estômatos quando cultivada in vitro, enquanto que, Annona bahiensis, Annona glabra, Annona squamosa e Rolinia silvatica apresentaram aumento na densidade estomática e na redução na espessura das epidermes foliares nesse tipo de cultivo.

The field experiment was carried out with some selected mungbean genotypes viz. IPSA-13, VC-6173A, BU mug 2, BARI Mung-5 and IPSA-12 to observe the effect of 4-days flooding on their growth and yield of mungbean under field conditions at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh during September to November, 2011 maintaining 3-5 cm standing water at 24 days after emergence. Days to flowering and maturity delayed in flooded plants over control depending on the genotypes. Flooding significantly reduced Total Day Matters (TDM), number of pods per plant, seed size and seed yield of the mungbean genotypes over control. Considering higher seed yield, larger seed size and less yield reduction relative to control VC-6173A, BU mug 2 and IPSA-13 were found tolerant to soil flooding condition.Bangladesh J. Agril. <p>O aumento no cultivo de soja no Brasil têm atingido áreas antes utilizadas para outros fins, como em regiões de solos de várzea, estando assim, sujeita a eventuais alagamentos do solo. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar alterações morfofisiológicas em cultivares de soja de ciclo médio, em condições de alagamento do solo, nos estádios fenológicos vegetativo e reprodutivo para recomendação de cultivares. Os experimentos foram conduzidos na Estação Experimental de Terras Baixas, da Embrapa Clima Temperado em Capão do Leão, RS. Foram aplicados três sistemas de manejo da água: condição normal de cultivo (sem alagamento), alagamento no período vegetativo (V3/V4) e alagamento no período reprodutivo (R2/R3). As avaliações realizadas durante o ciclo da cultura foram: altura de plantas, diâmetro da haste principal, índice do teor de clorofila, fenologia e número de nós nas hastes por planta. O alagamento do solo reduz o número de nós na haste principal, reduzindo a estatura das plantas, sendo os efeitos mais acentuados quando o alagamento ocorre no estádio vegetativo. Além disso, o alagamento do solo no período reprodutivo promove aumento do diâmetro da haste principal. O alagamento do solo causa retardamento de ocorrência dos estádios fenológicos, bem como do ciclo total das cultivares de soja.</p><p align="center"><strong><em>Morphophysiological performance of medium cycle soybean cultivars under flooding</em></strong><strong><em></em></strong></p><pre><strong>Abstract: </strong>The increase in soybean cultivation in Brazil has reached areas previously used for other purposes, such as in regions of lowland soils, thus being subject to possible soil flooding. This study aimed to evaluate morphophysiological changes in medium cycle soybean cultivars, under soil flooding conditions, in the vegetative and reproductive stages to recommend cultivars.<strong> </strong>The experiments were conducted at the Estação Experimental de Terras Baixas, EMBRAPA Clima Temperado in the Capão do Leão city, RS. Three water management systems were applied: normal cultivation condition (without flooding), flooding in the vegetative stage (V3 / V4) and flooding during the reproductive stage (R2 / R3). During the crop cycle, plant height, diameter of the main stem, chlorophyll content index, phenology and number of nodes in the stem per plant were collected. On the basis of the results this study, it can be concluded that he flooding reduces the number of nodes on the main stem, reducing plant height, with the most pronounced effects when flooding occurs in the vegetative stage. Furthermore, flooding the reproductive stage promotes increased diameter of the main stem. Flooding causes delay of occurrence of phenological stages and the total cycle of soybean cultivars.</pre>
