Abstract Several limitations in achieving optimal gear performance with conventional nitriding have led researchers to work on a variety of novel and improved nitriding processes. Of these, ion/plasma nitriding offers some promising results, which are reviewed in this chapter. The chapter concludes with a case history describing the application of ion nitriding to an internal ring gear of an epicyclic gearbox.

In order to reduce volume of robot actuator, a novel gear meshing motor with three phase poles was presented. The rotors and external gears are connected as one part by which the external gears are driven meshing with fixed internal ring gear to output big torque. The torque is convenient to be controlled for its separated magnetic poles without magnetic coupling. The operation principle and magnetic field characteristics were analyzed and the control method was introduced. The finite element software Ansof.Maxwell is used to simulate and calculate the flux linkage where rotor was at different positions, and the static torque obtained directly through magnetic coenergy method. The simulation results verify that output torque of designed motor can reach 1.9Nm under 4A current.

The Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) is where human settlements border or intermingle with undeveloped land, often with multiple detrimental consequences. Therefore, mapping the WUI is required in order to identify areas-at-risk. There are two main WUI mapping methods, the point-based approach and the zonal approach. Both differ in data requirements and may produce considerably different maps, yet they were never compared before. My objective was to systematically compare the point-based and the zonal-based WUI maps of California, and to test the efficacy of a new database of building locations in the context of WUI mapping. I assessed the spatial accuracy of the building database, and then compared the spatial patterns of WUI maps by estimating the effect of multiple ancillary variables on the amount of agreement between maps. I found that the building database is highly accurate and is suitable for WUI mapping. The point-based approach estimated a consistently larger WUI area across California compared to the zonal approach. The spatial correspondence between maps was low-to-moderate, and was significantly affected by building numbers and by their spatial arrangement. The discrepancy between WUI maps suggests that they are not directly comparable within and across landscapes, and that each WUI map should serve a distinct practical purpose.

In this paper, a duplex spread blade method for cutting hypoid gears with modified tooth surface is proposed. The duplex spread blade method provides a rapid and economical manufacturing method because both the ring gear and pinion are cut by a spread blade method. In the proposed method, the nongenerated ring gear is manufactured with cutting edge that is altered from the usual straight line to a circular arc with a large radius of curvature and the circular arc cutting edge produces a modified tooth surface. The pinion is generated by a cutter with straight cutting edges as usual. The main procedure of this method is the determination of the cutter specifications and machine settings. The proposed method was validated by gear manufacture.

Stresses in flex spline/gear cup in harmonic drives with involute toothed gear pair and conventional strain wave generating cam are analyzed using finite element method in ANSYS® environment and experiments. The most innovative part of this investigation is establishing the evidence of secondary contacts and probable load shared by those contacts experimentally over the finite element analysis. Aiming at the performance improvement of gearing in harmonic drives, with involute toothed gear pair, the investigations are carried out through the following analyses. (a) Initial stresses in flex gear cup due to cam insertion only. (b) Stresses in flex gear cup at no load in fully assembled harmonic drive components i.e. flex gear, ring gear, and strain wave generating cam. (c) Stresses in flex gear cup at full load passing through the two pitch points, i.e. the intersection points of ring gear pitch circle, flex gear pitch curve, and major axis on both sides. Finally, (d) stresses in flex gear cup at full load distributed over all possible primary and secondary contacts, in proportion to their contact intensities. Recorded strains of the flex-gear cup while the cam being rotated showed very good agreement with the results obtained by finite element analysis with proper modeling of loading.

The dynamic model of Ravingneaux compound planetary gear sets has been built. Then the Natural frequency and vibration model have been solved in the Ravingneaux compound planetary gear sets. The eigensensitivity to parameters have been researched based on the dynamical model. The varying trend of natural frequency according to the varying of parameters have been researched, which include gear mass (sun gear, ring gear , or planet gear), the moment of inertia of gears, the support stiffness , the torsional stiffness.

This article studies the first German translation of the “Six Books on the Republic” by the French lawyer and philosopher Jean Boden, published in 1592. Particular attention is paid to the preface to the treatise, which was written by the translator, a Lutheran priest Johann Oswaldt. There, Oswaldt sets out his position on the “Republic” as well as points out the need for this translation and the relevance of Boden’s treatise for monarchs and rulers. Oswaldt’s foreword is remarkable, firstly, for the terminological synthesis that he carries out. Relying on Boden’s both French and Latin manuscripts of “The Republic”, he carefully selects appropriate German terms to convey their connotations. Second, the German translation of “The Republic” opens the possibility of following the reception of Jean Boden’s ideas in Germany. The authors of this article come to the conclusion that Oswaldt had a practical purpose when he translated the main political work that substantiated the theory of sovereignty. The dedication of the translation to the Duke of Württemberg and the Count of Mümpelgard politicizes his scholarly effort. In fact, following Boden himself, Oswaldt aims to make “The Republic” read and utilized by his patrons. In the long term, the implementation of the ideas outlined in “The Republic” will lead to the foundation of the sovereignty of Württemberg. At the same time, the study of the first German translation has further research implications, since it outlines the area of distribution of Boden’s treatise on the European continent. The German translation followed the Italian and Spanish editions, but appeared earlier than the English translation. Hence, this article might pave the way for studying the reception of the theory of sovereignty in the works of German authors in Russian historiography.
