This is an introduction to the special issue of California Management Review on Design Thinking (DT). This special issue joins the growing body of work exploring the idea of DT and whether DT makes a difference in terms enhancing or augmenting the impact of technology—and, as a result, innovation—in a positive way. We have chosen an interesting, relevant, and useful array of papers that provide different approaches, views, and interpretations of applied design thinking. These articles provide both management and scholarly readers with insights in how DT is used, as well as its impact and usefulness in a variety of contexts.

AbstractIn the period 1815–1870, several thousand British workers and engineers went to the continent for work purposes, playing a decisive part in European industrialisation. Workers emigrated because they could market their skills at good value; or because their British employers sought to make the most of their technical lead by setting businesses up abroad, and by producing on the continent, they could avoid protective tariffs.Which social and cultural factors enabled British capital to flow to continental and indeed global enterprise, British skills to shape labour processes overseas, and British male and female labourers to seek and find overseas employment? This introduction to the Special Issue raises a series of questions on these flows. It asks what numbers went to the continent, in comparison with the large flows to the US and the British World. It addresses the legislative and economic aspects of these labour migrations and tries to relate these to the discussion on the supposed ‘high-wage economy’ of the British industrial revolution. It also focuses on the practicalities of migration. Last, it is also interested in the cultural, religious and associational life of the British migrants, as well as in the relations with the local populations.

First, we would like to express our sincere condolences to the victims of the landslides and floods caused by the torrential rain in Japan in July 2018. We were terribly grieved to hear about these disasters during the editing of this special issue of the International Journal of Automation Technology (IJAT), and we sincerely hope for the revival of the disaster-stricken areas. This special issue focuses on the progress in manufacturing technologies for maximizing product quality and reducing costs, especially in the mechanical industry. Manufacturing technologies have been developing in order to meet the changes in social and economic environments such as progress in informatization, diverse needs, and increasing demands for a sustainable society. At present, engineers and researchers in the field of manufacturing are facing an unprecedented rapid change caused by the fourth industrial revolution. Therefore, research in this field is also expected to develop more than ever before. This special issue of IJAT contains seven research papers on topics including shearing of metal sheets, machine tools and machining technology, precision dimensional measurement, and nanoimprinting process. Some of the papers, revised and extended at the editors’ request, were presented originally at the 9th International Conference on Leading Edge Manufacturing in 21st Century (LEM21), held in Hiroshima, Japan in 2017. The editors thank the authors and reviewers for their comprehensive efforts in making this special issue possible, and hope that these articles will encourage further research on manufacturing technologies.

This paper explores how sustainability can be achieved through open innovation in the current 4th industrial revolution. Through a literature and practice review, we identify micro- and macro-dynamics of open innovation in addition to the dynamic roles of industry, government, university, and society. In particular, the industry continuously adopts open platforms to create and maintain ecosystem innovation. The government’s role has changed from regulation control toward facilitation. Universities have become proactively engaged in multiple areas, from technology transfer to knowledge co-creation. Societies and customers have started to form new concepts, R&D, and commercialization, resulting in a shared economy. Based on the analysis, we propose a conceptual framework to understand open innovation micro- and macro-dynamics with a quadruple-helix model for social, environmental, economic, cultural, policy, and knowledge sustainability. Furthermore, this provides an overview of the special issue, “Sustainability of Economy, Society, and Environment in the 4th Industrial Revolution”, which aims to respond to the 4th industrial revolution in terms of open innovation and cyber-physics from manufacturing to the service industry.

Visualization has an increasingly important role to play in scientific research. Moreover, visualization has a special role to play within artificial life as a result of the informal status of its key explananda: life and complexity. Both are poorly defined but apparently identifiable via raw inspection. Here we concentrate on how visualization techniques might allow us to move beyond this situation by facilitating increased understanding of the relationships between an ALife system's (low-level) composition and organization and its (high-level) behavior. We briefly review the use of visualization within artificial life, and point to some future developments represented by the articles collected within this special issue.
