Solid/liquid phase change occurring in a rectangular container with and without metal foams subjected to periodic pulsed heating is investigated. Natural convection in the melt is considered. Volume-averaged mass and momentum equations are employed, with the Brinkman–Forchheimer extension to Darcy’s law used to model the porous resistance. A local thermal nonequilibrium model, assuming equilibrium melting at the pore scale, is employed for energy transport through the metal foams and the interstitial phase change material (PCM). Separate volume-averaged energy equations for the foam and the PCM are written and are closed using a heat transfer coefficient. The enthalpy method is employed to account for phase change. The governing equations for the PCM without foam are derived from the porous medium equations. The governing equations are solved implicitly using a finite volume method on a fixed grid. The coupled effect of pulse width and natural convection in the melt is found to have a profound effect on the overall melting behavior. The influence of pulse width, Stefan number, and Rayleigh number on the temporal evolution of the melt front location and the melting rate for both the cases with and without metal foams is investigated.

The Linz–Donawitz (LD) converter is still the dominant process for converting hot metal into crude steel with the help of technically pure oxygen. Beside hot metal, scrap is the most important charging material which acts as an additional iron source and coolant. Because of the irrevocable importance of the process, there is continued interest in a dynamic simulation of the LD process, especially regarding the savings of material and process costs with optimized process times. Based on a thermodynamic and kinetic Matlab® coded model, the influences of several scrap parameters on its melting and dissolution behavior were determined, with a special focus on establishing the importance of specific factors on the crude steel composition and bath temperature after a defined blowing period to increase the accuracy of the process model. The calculations reported clearly indicate that the dynamic converter model reacts very sensitively to the chemical composition of the scrap as well as the charged scrap mass and size. Those results reflect the importance of experiments for validation on the diffusive scrap melting model in further research work. Based on that, reliable conclusions could be drawn to improve the theoretical and practical description of the dissolution and melting behavior of scrap in dynamic converter modelling.

Latent thermal energy storage is regarded as an effective strategy to utilize solar energy and recover automotive waste heat. Based upon an enthalpy-porosity method, the influence characteristics and mechanism of fin location on phase change material melting behavior in vertical rectangular enclosures were explored numerically. The results show that as fin location increases, the melting time decreases before attaining the minimum at the fin location of 0.20 after which it increases and finally surpasses the no fin case, because (1) the influence range of fins for conduction is limited by the bottom surface when putting fins next to this surface, (2) the liquid flow resistance increases with moving fins up, and (3) mounting fins near the top surface accelerates melting at the upper part, facilitating thermal stratification formation and weakening natural convection. Nu is higher than the no fin case, i.e., Nu enhancement factor is a positive value, in the melting process for a lower fin location, while for other fin locations, a transition to a negative value takes place. The higher the fin location is, the earlier the transition that arises. Finally, a strategy of increasing the maximum liquid flow velocity is proposed to reinforce melting for cases with considerable natural convection.

Under certain conditions, ash in black liquor forms a locally corrosive environment in a kraft recovery boiler. The ash also might cause efficiency losses and even boiler shutdown because of plugging of the flue gas passages. The most troublesome compounds in a fuel such as black liquor are potassium and chlorine because they change the melting behavior of the ash. Fouling and corrosion of the kraft recovery boiler have been researched extensively, but few computational models have been developed to deal with the subject. This report describes a computational fluid dynamics-based method for modeling the reactions between alkali metal compounds and for the formation of fine fume particles in a kraft recovery boiler furnace. The modeling method is developed from ANSYS/FLUENT software and its Fine Particle Model extension. We used the method to examine gaseous alkali metal compound and fine fume particle distributions in a kraft recovery boiler furnace. The effect of temperature and the boiler design on these variables, for example, can be predicted with the model. We also present some preliminary results obtained with the model. When the model is developed further, it can be extended to the superheater area of the kraft recovery boiler. This will give new insight into the variables that increase or decrease fouling and corrosion
