Impact of Drought Stress on Growth–Yield Parameters, Volatile Constituents and Physio-Biochemical Traits of Three Foeniculum vulgare Genotypes

Drought stress deleteriously affects growth, development and productivity in plants. So, we examined the silicon effect (2 mmol) and proline (10 mmol) individually or the combination (Si + proline) in alleviating the harmful effect of drought on total phenolic compounds, reactive oxygen species (ROS), chlorophyll concentration and antioxidant enzymes as well as yield parameters of drought-stressed sugar beet plants during 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons. Our findings indicated that the root diameter and length (cm), root and shoot fresh weights (g plant−1) as well as root and sugar yield significantly decreased in sugar beet plants under drought. Relative water content (RWC), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) contents and chlorophyll (Chl) concentration considerably reduced in stressed sugar beet plants that compared with control in both seasons. Nonetheless, lipid peroxidation (MDA), electrolyte leakage (EL), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide (O2●−) considerably elevated as signals of drought. Drought-stressed sugar beet plants showed an increase in proline accumulation, total phenolic compounds and up-regulation of antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity to mitigate drought effects. Si and proline individually or the combination Si + proline considerably increased root and sugar yield, sucrose%, Chl concentration and RWC, MDA and EL were remarkably reduced. The treatments led to adjust proline and total phenolic compounds as well as CAT and SOD activity in stressed sugar beet plants. We concluded that application of Si + proline under drought stress led to improve the resistance of sugar beet by regulating of proline, antioxidant enzymes, phenolic compounds and improving RWC, Chl concentration and Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) contents as well as yield parameters.

Okra is one of the most important summer vegetables in South Asian countries including Nepal. However, the damage by insects like Jassid (Amrasca biguttula Ish.) and whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Guen) has resulted in significant reduction of its production. An experiment was conducted based on intercropping taking okra (Abelmoschus exculentus L. Moench) as the main crop in Arghau, Lekhnath-27, Kaski, Nepal from March 4 to May 24, 2018. The intercrops used were coriander (Corriander sativum), carrot (Daucas carota), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and parsley (Petroselinum crispum). The population of jassid and whitefly was recorded from three leaves representing the different strata (bottom, middle and top) of the vegetative parts; and related yield parameters were also observed to correlate with the level of population incidence of these pests. Least numbers of jassids (5.50±0.29, 6.94±0.43, 8.00±0.41 and 3.69±0.76) were observed respectively at 30, 40, 50 and 60 days after sowing (DAS) in okra+ coriander. Likewise, okra + coriander intercropping was effective in inhibiting the population of whitefly (7.50±0.59, 8.56±0.19, 10.25±0.66 and 7.06±0.42) at 30, 40, 50 and 60 days after sowing (DAS) respectively. In contrary, the highest number of jassids and whiteflies were observed in okra + parsley and control (okra only). Both pod length (cm) and yield (t/ha) were the highest (17.92±0.57 and 28.20±0.49 respectively) in okra + coriander and were the lowest (16.42±0.21 and 27.58±0.39 respectively) in okra + carrot. The benefit-cost ratio was in order okra + coriander > okra + carrot > okra + fennel > okra + parsley > control (okra only). Among the different intercrop combinations, the okra + coriander was found most effective that could be suggested as one of the alternative strategies to limit the population of pests; jassid and whitefly in okra.

Abstract Experiment was conducted during summer season of 2021 to study the effect of foliar applications of Phenylalanine (Phe), Jasmonic acid (JA), Biofertilizer (Bio) and their combinations (Phe+JA, Phe+Bio, JA+Bio, Phe+JA+Bio and control) on some growth, yield parameters and anthocyanin compounds on Roselle calyces Hibiscus sabdariffa L., The treatments were distributed on Randomized Completely Block Design in three replicates, means were compared according to the Least Significant Difference test (LSD) at probability level of 0.05. The results show that growth parameters (plant height, branches number, leave area and chlorophyll) and yield parameters (fruits number, fresh weight calyces, fresh yield calyces and dry yield calyces) were increased due by foliar application Phe+JA+Bio, while the combination treatment Phe+Bio gave significant effects on vitamin C, total anthocyanin, Gossypetin, Sabdartine, Hibescitine, Delphidine and Cyanidin of calyces reached at 201.5, 184.5, 29.3, 31.2, 57.4, 35.4, 27.8 (mg.100g) respectively.
