AbstractVideo-based learning is widely used today in both formal education and informal learning in a variety of contexts. Videos are especially powerful for transferable skills learning (e.g. communicating, negotiating, collaborating), where contextualization in personal experience and ability to see different perspectives are crucial. With the ubiquity of widely available video content, video-based learning is seen as one of the main strategies to provide engaging learning environments. However, numerous studies show that to learn effectively while watching videos, students need to engage actively with video content. We have developed an active video watching platform (AVW-Space) to facilitate engagement with video content by providing means for constructive learning. The initial studies with AVW-Space on presentation skills show that only students who commented on videos and who rated comments written by their peers have improved their understanding of the target transferable skill. In order to foster deeper engagement, we designed a choice architecture and a set of nudges to encourage students to engage deeper. We conducted two studies investigating the effect of nudges. The results provide evidence that the initial set of implemented nudges is effective: the students who received nudges wrote more comments, used different aspects, and there were more students who wrote comments. The nudges were particularly helpful for undergraduate students who were less experienced in self-regulated learning. Future work includes designing additional nudges to enhance student engagement by improving the quality of comments and by encouraging participation in collaborative activities.

UNSTRUCTURED A case report is a detailed narrative that describes the symptoms, signs, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of a medical problem of an individual patient. They usually describe an unusual or novel occurrence and although they lie at the bottom of the hierarchy of the Evidence Based Medicine Pyramid, they still remain one of the cornerstones of medical progress and provide key additions to the existing medical literature. Unfortunately, abysmally few physicians-in-training receive a formal education regarding what constitutes a publishable case report. The article throws light on this aspect of medical education

The Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategies can be the best. It can be achieved by a sub-goal that will be more important in the younger generation. This paper proposes the process of developing factors (attributes) which are related to the development of learning styles through self-regulated strategies. The objectives of this paper are (1) to study the perception and attitude toward the attributes of students with self-regulated learning of the students in higher education, and (2) to find the level of acceptance towards the factor of SRL using applied statistics and machine learning technology. The results show that two tools have proved the respondents and the factors of SRL in the accepted level. Besides, the results found that Thai higher education students still focus on formal learning, which conflicts with the behavior and us-age of Internet and telephone in the classroom. In future work, the author is committed to develop and apply a self-regulated learning strategy model with a combination of collaborative learning strategies of blended learning. Also, it supports undergraduate students in analyzing the factors and studying the behavior patterns of learners in suitable modern learning.

ABSTRACTPhysics forms a core subject on any Materials Science and Engineering programme. In order to engage first year undergraduate students in the formal education environment, motivating the students is fundamental to ensuring their success. This qualitative study focuses on the use of technology to assess a student’s comprehension of fundamental light phenomena. A knowledge of light phenomena is essential in Materials Science, for the characterization of materials, where electromagnetic (EM) radiation is used as an analytical tool. Using visible light, students can easily see what is happening and when they have to capture digital evidence of the phenomena they focus on the event.Physical Physics a structured guided approach which initially leads the students through the theory and problem solving. It provides the knowledge scaffold the students require to allow them to use their individual creativity to express their understanding. In this case, understanding is captured and assessed by the production of a portfolio of original photographs of Light phenomena taken by the student.In addition to a traditional lecture exposition, Physical Physics takes an active learning approach with authentic assessment designed for deep learning. Students learn about relevant light phenomena in the familiar landscape of their world. The assessment provides opportunities for choice, creativity and reflection. It fosters students’ interest to encourage intrinsic motivation and engagement.This approach has been successfully piloted with first year undergraduate students. Samples of the students’ work is shown. The students interviewed reveal how this approach enhanced their understanding of these Light concepts and changed their perceptions of studying Physics in general.

Increased numbers of minorities in the allied health disciplines are sought for a number of reasons. One approach to increasing minority graduates in allied health sciences is to ensure that minority applicants have the learning behaviors necessary to succeed in the academic setting. In this study, we sought to determine if self-regulated learning, assessed via a self-report inventory, was significantly related to Grade Point Average (GPA) in undergraduate students enrolled in a historically black college or university (HBCU). The Self Regulated Learning Inventory V. 5 (SRLI V.5) was distributed to undergraduate HBCU students enrolled in allied health majors. The inventory was completed by 134 undergraduate students who provided the data for the study. Results indicated that the SRLI was not significantly correlated with academic success (based on student GPA). Further investigation revealed that different methods used in calculating GPA and the inclusion of transfer students likely decreased the statistical power of the association between academic performance and self-regulation.

PurposeUndergraduate students often find it difficult to organize their learning activities and manage their learning. Also, teachers need dynamic pedagogical frameworks and learning technologies for supporting learners to advance their academic performance. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of an ePortfolio intervention on self-regulated learning (SRL cognitive, affective, behavioral and contextual processes) and academic achievement.Design/methodology/approachFor the purposes of this study, an ePortfolio was designed and implemented based on SRL. The ePortfolio-based self-regulated learning approach (ePSRL) system encompasses the merits of a social networking platform and the functionalities of a learning management system. The participants were 123 university students (38 females and 85 males) at a computer science department. Students were randomly divided into two groups, the experimental and the control group.FindingsThe results of the study indicate that there is a significant increase of the means across SRL processes between the perceptions in the experimental and the control group. The implementation of the ePSRL approach as a learning module for undergraduate students could enable learners to manage their learning processes, transform their behavior into measurable learning outcomes and foster their academic performance.Originality/valueThis paper considers the importance of SRL and ePortfolios. Also, highlights the need of providing technology enhanced training courses and interventions to undergraduate students for supporting them to thrive during their academic studies. Thus, it proposes a set of educational affordances and practical guidelines that can be used by practitioners, instructional designers and educators in higher education as well as in vocational education and training institutions.

Research has identified factors promoting innovative behavior (IB) among employees in organizations. However, the effect of knowledge sharing behavior (KSB), self-regulated learning (SRL), and course design characteristics (CDCs) in developing IB among information technology (IT) students in universities is not well understood. The purpose of the study was developing a structural equation model (SEM) of the drivers of IB among IT students. As very little research simultaneously explores the determinants of undergraduate students' IB, one of the study objectives is to plug the literature gap by examining how SRL and CDCs act as antecedents of IB, via the mediating action of KSB. The findings are summated in a KSB-IB SEM. The results largely support all the hypotheses and suggest a significant indirect relationship between SRL and IB, fully mediated by KSB. The indirect relationship between CDCs and IB was significantly and fully mediated by KSB. The results of the study reveal that both CDCs and SRL act as drivers of KSB and IB among IT students.
