AbstractSurrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms have been paid more and more attention to solve computationally expensive problems. However, model management still plays a significant importance in searching for the optimal solution. In this paper, a new method is proposed to measure the approximation uncertainty, in which the differences between the solution and its neighbour samples in the decision space, and the ruggedness of the objective space in its neighborhood are both considered. The proposed approximation uncertainty will be utilized in the surrogate-assisted global search to find a solution for exact objective evaluation to improve the exploration capability of the global search. On the other hand, the approximated fitness value is adopted as the infill criterion for the surrogate-assisted local search, which is utilized to improve the exploitation capability to find a solution close to the real optimal solution as much as possible. The surrogate-assisted global and local searches are conducted in sequence at each generation to balance the exploration and exploitation capabilities of the method. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on seven benchmark problems with 10, 20, 30 and 50 dimensions, and one real-world application with 30 and 50 dimensions. The experimental results show that the proposed method is efficient for solving the low- and medium-dimensional expensive optimization problems by compared to the other six state-of-the-art surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms.

In this paper, the optimal sizing of truss structures is solved using a novel evolutionary-based optimization algorithm. The efficiency of the proposed method lies in the combination of global search and local search, in which the global move is applied for a set of random solutions whereas the local move is performed on the other solutions in the search population. Three truss sizing benchmark problems with discrete variables are used to examine the performance of the proposed algorithm. Objective functions of the optimization problems are minimum weights of the whole truss structures and constraints are stress in members and displacement at nodes. Here, the constraints and objective function are treated separately so that both function and constraint evaluations can be saved. The results show that the new algorithm can find optimal solution effectively and it is competitive with some recent metaheuristic algorithms in terms of number of structural analyses required.

A road network usually has to fulfill two requirements: (i) it should as far as possible provide direct connections between nodes to avoid large detours; and (ii) the costs for road construction and maintenance, which are assumed proportional to the total length of the roads, should be low. The optimal solution is a compromise between these contradictory demands, which in our model can be weighted by a parameter. The road optimization problem belongs to the class of frustrated optimization problems. In this paper, a special class of evolutionary strategies, such as the Boltzmann and Darwin and mixed strategies, are applied to find differently optimized solutions (graphs of varying density) for the road network, depending on the degree of frustration. We show that the optimization process occurs on two different time scales. In the asymptotic limit, a fixed relation between the mean connection distance (detour) and the total length (costs) of the network exists that defines a range of possible compromises. Furthermore, we investigate the density of states, which describes the number of solutions with a certain fitness value in the stationary regime. We find that the network problem belongs to a class of optimization problems in which more effort in optimization certainly yields better solutions. An analytical approximation for the relation between effort and improvement is derived.

An improved real-coded genetic algorithm (IRCGA) is proposed to solve constrained optimization problems. First, a sorting grouping selection method is given with the advantage of easy realization and not needing to calculate the fitness value. Secondly, a heuristic normal distribution crossover (HNDX) operator is proposed. It can guarantee the cross-generated offsprings to locate closer to the better one among the two parents and the crossover direction to be very close to the optimal crossover direction or to be consistent with the optimal crossover direction. In this way, HNDX can ensure that there is a great chance of generating better offsprings. Thirdly, since the GA in the existing literature has many iterations, the same individuals are likely to appear in the population, thereby making the diversity of the population worse. In IRCGA, substitution operation is added after the crossover operation so that the population does not have the same individuals, and the diversity of the population is rich, thereby helping avoid premature convergence. Finally, aiming at the shortcoming of a single mutation operator which cannot simultaneously take into account local search and global search, this paper proposes a combinational mutation method, which makes the mutation operation take into account both local search and global search. The computational results with nine examples show that the IRCGA has fast convergence speed. As an example application, the optimization model of the steering mechanism of vehicles is formulated and the IRCGA is used to optimize the parameters of the steering trapezoidal mechanism of three vehicle types, with better results than the other methods used.

Recently, evolutionary algorithms that can efficiently solve decomposable binary optimization problems have been developed. They are so-called model-based evolutionary algorithms, which build a model for generating solution candidates by applying a machine learning technique to a population. Their central procedure is linkage detection that reveals a problem structure, that is, how the entire problem consists of sub-problems. However, the model-based evolutionary algorithms have been shown to be ineffective for problems that do not have relevant structures or those whose structures are hard to identify. Therefore, evolutionary algorithms that can solve both types of problems quickly, reliably, and accurately are required. The objective of the paper is to investigate whether the evolutionary algorithm evolving developmental timings (EDT) that we previously proposed can be the desired one. The EDT makes some variables values more quickly converge than the remains for any problems, and then, decides values of the remains to obtain a higher fitness value under the fixation of the variables values. In addition, factors to decide which variable values converge more quickly, that is, developmental timings are evolution targets. Simulation results reveal that the EDT has worse performance than the linkage tree genetic algorithm (LTGA), which is one of the state-of-the-art model-based evolutionary algorithms, for decomposable problems and also that the difference in the performance between them becomes smaller for problems with overlaps among linkages and also that the EDT has better performance than the LTGA for problems whose structures are hard to identify. Those results suggest that an appropriate search strategy is different between decomposable problems and those hard to decompose.

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are widely employed to solve a broad range of optimization problems. Even though they work in an algorithmically simple manner, it is not always easy to understand what is going on during a particular optimization run. It is especially desirable to gain further insight into the state and course of the algorithm if the optimization does not yield the expected results or if we are not sure whether the result achieved is really the best result possible. During an optimization run an EA produces a vast amount of data. The extraction of useful information is a nontrivial task. In this article, we review visualization methods used to extract this useful information. We also demonstrate the application of visualization techniques and explain how they help us to understand the course and state of the EA. This extra information gained by the use of visualization techniques is often the difference between a good result and a very good result. In complex real-world applications, merely achieving a good result often means that the approach has failed. On the other hand, a success means large gains in productivity or safety or a decrease in costs.

This paper introduces a modified differential evoluiton method to solve the tension/compression string design problem. The modification is derived from mechanisms of social networks. In the proposed method, each individual will be attracted by the knowed best individual following the connectivity between each other. The connectivity is calculated based on the difference of the variables in each vector. The individuals with high connectivity tend to perform local search while those with poor connectivity tend to perform global search instead. The approach was employed for a tension/compression string design problem and by comparisons with the other evolutionary algorithms, the proposed method privided better resutls.

The paper presents an approach to design optimization using parallel evolutionary algorithms. The only use of a simple evolutionary algorithm in order to generate the optimal solution for complex problems can be ineffective due to long calculation time. Thus a tournament evolutionary algorithm (EA) and a parallel computation method are proposed and used. The proposed EA does not require an analysis of the optimization model for each potential solution from evolutionary populations. The second element of the method consists in parallel running of evolutionary algorithms using multi-threads approach. The experiments were carried out for many different single design optimization problems and two of them are presented in the paper. The first problem considers a task of robot gripper mechanism optimization and the second one deals with the optimization of a shaft based on Finite Element Method analysis. From the generated results it is clear that proposed approach is a very effective tool for solving fairly complicated tasks considering both the accuracy and the time of calculation.

The numerical solution of the dynamic optimization problem is often sought for chemical processes, but the discretization of control variables is a difficult problem. Firstly, based on the analysis of the seagull optimization algorithm, this paper introduces the cognitive part in the process of a seagull’s attack behavior to make the group approach the best position. Secondly, the algorithm adds the mechanism of natural selection, where the fitness value is used to sort the population, and the best half is used to replace the worst half, so as to find out the optimal solution. Finally, the improved seagull optimization algorithm (ISOA) is combined with the unequal division method to solve dynamic optimization problems. The feasibility of the method is verified by three practical examples of dynamic optimization in chemical industry.

AbstractSurrogate-assisted meta-heuristic algorithms have shown good performance to solve the computationally expensive problems within a limited computational resource. Compared to the method that only one surrogate model is utilized, the surrogate ensembles have shown more efficiency to get a good optimal solution. In this paper, we propose a bi-stage surrogate-assisted hybrid algorithm to solve the expensive optimization problems. The framework of the proposed method is composed of two stages. In the first stage, a number of global searches will be conducted in sequence to explore different sub-spaces of the decision space, and the solution with the maximum uncertainty in the final generation of each global search will be evaluated using the exact expensive problems to improve the accuracy of the approximation on corresponding sub-space. In the second stage, the local search is added to exploit the sub-space, where the best position found so far locates, to find a better solution for real expensive evaluation. Furthermore, the local and global searches in the second stage take turns to be conducted to balance the trade-off of the exploration and exploitation. Two different meta-heuristic algorithms are, respectively, utilized for the global and local search. To evaluate the performance of our proposed method, we conduct the experiments on seven benchmark problems, the Lennard–Jones potential problem and a constrained test problem, respectively, and compare with five state-of-the-art methods proposed for solving expensive problems. The experimental results show that our proposed method can obtain better results, especially on high-dimensional problems.
