The use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) aggregates as replacement for new materials in the pavement base weakens the layer in regards to the resistance to permanent deformation under repeated loading. A mechanistic based design procedure is proposed to ensure that base layers containing RAP particles have a similar rutting behaviour to base layers made of virgin aggregates. The design procedure allows calculating an asphalt concrete thickness increase that is based on permanent deformation behaviour of base materials. The calculation approach is based on multistage triaxial permanent deformation tests performed on granular material samples with varied RAP content. The tests allowed proposing an equation that relates permanent strain rate, RAP content, and deviatoric stress, which is the basis of the design procedure. Design charts are proposed to select adequate thickness increase for the asphalt concrete layer according to the expected RAP content in the base layer and asphalt concrete modulus.

The multistage and discontinuous nature of the injection process used in the geological storage of CO2 causes reservoirs to experience repeated loading and unloading. The reservoir permeability changes caused by this phenomenon directly impact the CO2 injection process and the process of CO2 migration in the reservoirs. Through laboratory experiments, variations in the permeability of sandstone in the Liujiagou formation of the Ordos CO2 capture and storage (CCS) demonstration project were analyzed using cyclic variations in injection pressure and confining pressure and multistage loading and unloading. The variation in the micropore structure and its influence on the permeability were analyzed based on micropore structure tests. In addition, the effects of multiple stress changes on the permeability of the same type of rock with different clay minerals content were also analyzed. More attention should be devoted to the influence of pressure variations on permeability in evaluations of storage potential and studies of CO2 migration in reservoirs in CCS engineering.

Bitumen is widely used in road construction. Due to heavy traffic loads and environmental factors, bitumen properties will change during service life. Bitumen will age due to diffusion of oxygen and UV radiation. Repeated loading will result in decreasing strength because of fatigue. In this paper, one layer clay powder was used to modify base bitumen with different mass contents. Then the influences of ultraviolet radiation (UV) aging on the dynamic fatigue properties of the layered clay powder were evaluated by Dynamic Shear Rheomoter (DSR) and Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The ageing evaluation shows that the ageing resistance of bitumen is improved and this improvement is more notable in bitumen fatigue than mixture.

Overuse tendinopathies are often considered to be the result of repeated microstrain below the failure threshold, analogous to the fatigue failure of materials under repeated loading [1, 2]. Investigation of tendon overuse in vitro is thus of potential benefit towards characterizing the progression of damage.
