The polarization of postures in conflicts among parents and adolescents involve a threat for family harmony. Skills for argumentation and perspective taking are required to enable the achievement of satisfactory agreements during the processes of negotiation. The purpose of this paper has been to analyze the skills of parents and adolescents to adopt other perspectives when discussing a conflict by means of observational methodology. The study was carried out with 29 families (constituted by father, mother and an adolescent son or daughter) who were recorded while they argued about a real conflict. Frequency and duration of five levels of perspective-taking were registered (Myself; Reasoned myself; the other like an obstacle; the other adding to me; and us) in the discourse of the family, and also in the different members of the triad, considering their interrelations. The results were showing a moderated level of perspective-taking in family discussions, predominating the levels Reasoned myself, focused on explaining own perspective, and The other like an obstacle, focused on reasons to contest the perspective of the other. In general parents showed more perspective-taking. Particularly the mothers exhibited more sensitivity with her adolescent son or daughter, providing higher levels of perspective-taking and argumentation.

This report examined the stability and reliability of self-reported conflict frequency in relationships with mothers, fathers, and best friends. Participants were drawn from three independent samples in the Netherlands (n = 72, M = 15.6 years), Germany (n = 242, M = 19.7 years), and the United States (n = 250, M = 19.8 years). Participants completed both topic-based surveys and interaction-based diary assessments of conflict frequency. Within samples, comparable levels of internal consistency and temporal stability emerged in each relationship for both assessment techniques. Topic-based and interaction-based assessments of conflict frequency were moderately correlated in each relationship within samples. Daily topic-based assessments with short intervals between time points may provide the most advantageous assessment strategy for obtaining reliable measures of conflict frequency in adolescents’ close relationships.

In the design of plating subject to lateral loading, the principal load effect to be considered is the amount of permanent set, that is, the maximum permanent deflection in the center of each panel of plating bounded by the stiffeners and the crossbeams. The present paper is complementary to a previous paper [1]2 which dealt with uniform pressure loads. It first shows that for design purposes there are two types of concentrated loads, depending on the number of different locations in which they can occur; single location or multiple location. The hypothesis is then made that for multiple-location loads the eventual and stationary pattern of plasticity which is developed in the plating is very similar to that for uniform pressure loads, and hence the value of permanent set may be obtained by using the same formula as for uniform pressure loads, with a load parameter Q that is some multiple r of the load parameter for the concentrated load: 0 = rQP. The value of r is a function of the degree of concentration of the load and is almost independent of plate slenderness and aspect ratio. The general mathematical character of this function is established from first principles and from an analysis of the permanent set caused by a multiple-location point load acting on a long plate. The results of this theoretical analysis provide good support for the hypothesis, as do also the relatively limited experimental data which are available. The theory and the experimental data are combined to obtain a simple mathematical expression for r. A more precise expression can be obtained after further experiments have been performed with more highly concentrated loads. Single-location loads produce a different pattern of plasticity and require a different approach. A suitable design formula is developed herein by performing regression analysis on the data from a set of experiments performed with such loads. Both methods presented herein, one for multiple-location loads and the other for single-location loads, are valid for small and moderate values of permanent set and can be used for all static and quasistatic loads. Dynamic loads and applications involving large amounts of permanent set require formulas based on rigid-plastic theory. Such formulas are available for uniform pressure loads and were quoted in reference [1]. A formula for single-location loads has recently been derived by Kling [4] and is quoted herein.

Traditional multilane roundabouts have many branch lanes without traffic signs and channelization, which leads to a high tendency for traffic collisions. Turbo roundabouts are a new design that has the potential to reduce lane-change conflicts using canalization to force drivers to keep in specific lanes based on their intended destination. This paper evaluates the safety and efficiency performance of turbo roundabouts for the case of a five-leg roundabout called Lujiazui in Shanghai and provides design and construction guidelines when applying the turbo design. The models for the Lujiazui roundabout and the reconstructed turbo version were built in Vissim, and a comprehensive series of experiments under different traffic volumes and central island radii was performed. Afterward, the conflict statistics extracted from the trajectory files in the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM) were analyzed using the conflict severity index (CSI) and were then integrated to calculate the modified conflict frequency (MCF) for safety performance evaluation. A comparative efficiency analysis was also conducted as a supplement. Based on the results, the relative characteristics for safety and efficiency between the turbo and original designs of the Lujiazui roundabout were analyzed. Suggestions to apply the turbo design on a five-leg roundabout are introduced.
