P25 loaded few layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets (P25@MoS2) are successfully synthesized through a facile one-step hydrothermal process. The bi-catalytic activities, i.e., photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activities, of the as-prepared nanomaterials have been investigated. For the as-prepared products, the photocatalytic performances were investigated by degrading simulated pollutant under sunlight irradiation, and the hydrogen evolution reaction evaluated the electrocatalytic performances. The results indicate that P25@MoS2 possesses excellent activities in both photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. The presence of MoS2 broadens the light absorption range of P25 and improves the separation and transformation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, thus improving its photocatalytic performance. The existence of P25 inhibits the aggregation of MoS2 to form more dispersed MoS2 nanosheets with only few layers increasing its active sites. Thereby, the electrocatalytic performance is heightened. The excellent multifunction makes the as-prepared P25@MoS2 a promising material in the fields of environment and energy.

In this paper, a AgI@TCNQ photocatalyst with a core-shell structure was reported. A two-dimensional TCNQ (7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane) nanosheet, with a π-π conjugate structure, was used as a shell layer to realize the flexible coating on the surface of AgI nanoparticles. These special core-shell structure composites solve the key problems of the small interface of the bulk composites and the lesser charge transfer paths, which could accelerate the migration of photogenerated carriers. Thus, the AgI@TCNQ photocatalysts showed the better photodegradation performance for the methylene blue (MB) solution, and the degradation rate of AgI@TCNQ (1 wt.%) composite was 1.8 times than AgI under irradiation. The reactive species trapping experiments demonstrated that ·O2−, h+, and ·OH all participated in the MB degradation process. The photocatalytic mechanism of AgI@TCNQ composites could be rationally explained by considering the Z-scheme structure, resulting in a higher redox potential and more efficient separation of charge carriers. At the same time, the unique core-shell structure provides a larger contact area, expands the charge transport channel, and increases the surface active sites, which are beneficial for improving photocatalytic performance.

Heterojunction engineering has shown great potential in the field of photocatalysis to deal with environmental pollutants. The design and synthesis of heterojunction photocatalysts with high efficiency and stability still face great challenges. In this work, a novel CdS quantum dots (QDs) decorated 3D Bi2O2CO3 hierarchical nanoflower heterojunction photocatalyst (Bi2O2CO3/CdS QDs) was synthesized to investigate the photocatalytic Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation performance. CdS QDs were evenly distributed on the surface of the Bi2O2CO3 nanoflower. Bi2O2CO3/CdS QDs showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic RhB degradation performance compared with pristine Bi2O2CO3 and CdS QDs. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the synergistic effect of hierarchical structure and heterojunction, which greatly increased the active sites of the reaction and the photogenerated carriers transfer.

The construction of highly efficient, low-cost and noble-metal-free photocatalysts depends on photocatalytic technology. Recently, N-rich C3N5 has been explored as a novel carbon nitride material with a much narrower band gap (~2.2 eV) than that of traditional C3N4 (~2.7 eV). Planting noble-metal-free active sites on C3N5 to improve its photocatalytic activity is of great significance. Herein, 2D NixSy nanosheet is facially loaded on 2D C3N5 using a hydrothermal procedure under a low temperature. Due to the quick separation of photogenerated carries between C3N5 and NixSy, this inexpensive noble-metal-free NixSy-C3N5 hybrid nanosheet is highly efficient and stable as a multifunctional catalyst in various applications, including photocatalytic H2 production from water and NO removal. Impressively, the apparent quantum yield (AQY) value for H2 production reaches 37.0% (at 420 nm) on optimal NixSy-C3N5 hybrids, which is much higher than that of Pt-C3N5 material. This work opens an avenue to the fabrication of low-cost and noble-metal-free catalysts for multifunctional photocatalytic applications.

Improving the photocatalytic performance of multi-component photocatalysts through structural modulation and band alignment engineering has attracted great interest in the context of solar energy utilization and conversion. In our work, Zn2SnO4/SnO2 hierarchical architectures comprising nanorod building block assemblies were first achieved via a facile solvothermal synthesis route with lysine and ethylenediamine (EDA) as directing agents, and then chemically etched in NaOH solution to enlarge the surface area and augment active sites. The etched Zn2SnO4/SnO2 hierarchical architectures were further decorated by Cu2O nanoparticles though an in situ chemical deposition method based on band alignment engineering. In comparison with unetched Zn2SnO4/SnO2, the specific surface area of Zn2SnO4/SnO2/Cu2O hierarchical architectures became larger, and the responsive region and absorbance intensity became wider and higher in the whole visible-light range. Zn2SnO4/SnO2/Cu2O hybrid photocatalysts presented enormously improved visible-light photocatalytic behaviour for Rhodamine B (RhB) decomposition. The enhancement of photocatalytic behaviour was dominantly attributed to the synergy effect of the larger specific surface area, higher light absorption capacity, and more effective photo-induced charge carrier separation and migration. A proposed mechanism for the enormously promoted photocatalytic behaviour is brought forth on the basis of the energy-band structure combined with experimental results.

A zeolite/TiO2 composite (ZTC) was applied to prepare a high-quality photocatalytic cement-based material (PCM). The acetone degradation experiment and micro measurements including XRD(X-Ray Diffractometer), SEM-EDS(Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive Spectrometer), BET(BET Specific Surface Area Tester), FTIR(Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer) were conducted to characterize the photocatalytic efficiency and physicochemical properties of PCM, respectively. Results show that TiO2 particles disperse on the surface of a PCM homogeneously and provide abundant active sites for photocatalytic reactions. Compared to a normal photocatalytic cement-based material (NPCM), the TiO2 content of a PCM is lower and its photocatalytic efficiency is higher. The ZTC frees TiO2 particles from the impacts of cement hydration products and increases the adsorption volume of acetone. The photocatalytic performance of the PCM was stable after repeated tests. Using the ZTC as a photocatalyst has a prominent effect on the photocatalytic performance of the PCM.
