Indonesia has agreat variety of roosters, either indigenous type as well as exotic and cross breed. The purpose of this experiment was to study the characteristics of semen from three types of Indonesian local roosters such as Merawang, Kampung and crosses Sentul Kampung with Kedu (SK Kedu). A total of 15 roosters consist of  Merawang roosters,  Kampung, and SK Kedu roosters were 5 each. The semen was collected 3 times a week by dorso-abdominal and cloaca massage method. The parameters evaluation was macroscopic characteristics consist of volume, color, consistency, and pH. Microscopic evaluation of semen such as a mass movement, sperm motility, live sperm, sperm abnormality and sperm concentration. Results of this experiment showed that semen volume of  Merawang  (0.40±0.26 mL) was higher (p<0.05) compare to Kampung (0.24±0.12 mL) or  SK Kedu (0.16±0.10 mL) but no difference on semen color, consistency and semen pH. There were no difference in the mass movement, sperm motility and live sperm as well as on sperm abnormality among three types of roosters.  Sperm  concentration of Merawang (4490 million mL-1) was significantly higher than Kampung (3245 million mL-1) and the SK Kedu roosters (3751 million mL-1). Its was conclude that Merawang roosters had good semen quality better than Kampung and SK Kedu roosters

A study was carried out to study the effect of freezing on cryosurvival of yak semen. Artificial insemination in yak is still in infancy. Semen cryopreservation and use of artificial insemination can be applied in yak husbandry for conservation and rapid multiplication of superior germplasm. Semen was collected from four adult yak bulls using artificial vagina method managed under uniform conditions. A total of 40 ejaculates comprising of 10 ejaculates each bull were collected following twice a week schedule and evaluated for fresh semen characteristics. The fresh yak semen characteristics viz. ejaculate volume (ml), mass activity (0-4), initial sperm motility (%), sperm concentration (x 106/ml), live sperm (%), sperm abnormality (%) and intact acrosome (%) were 3.10 ± 0.18, 3.53 ± 0.96, 83.89 ± 2.87, 1180.22 ± 42.32, 77.63 ± 4.23, 8.45 ± 3.33 and 93.61 ± 3.78 respectively. The ejaculates were diluted (1:10) with Tris extender consisting of 6.4 ml glycerol and 20 ml of fresh egg yolk. Straws were equilibrated at 5°C for 4 hours followed by exposure to liquid nitrogen vapour for 10 minutes and finally transferred to liquid nitrogen container for storage. The cryosurvival rate was studied after 7 days of storage in liquid nitrogen. The frozen semen was thawed in warm water (37°C) for 30 seconds for evaluation. Mean values of postthaw sperm motility (%), live sperm (%) and intact acrosome (%) in yaks were 55.67 ± 4.67, 65.62 ± 3.23 and 89.26 ± 3.67 respectively. In conclusion, yak semen has a better cryosurvival while freezing in tris extender with 6.4 per cent glycerol and 20 per cent egg yolk following an equilibration period of 4h.SAARC J. CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have shown regional and population differences in semen characteristics. The objective was to establish reference values for semen analysis and to verify the effect that age, length of sexual abstinence, seasonality, smoking habits and coffee consumption have on fertile individuals’ semen characteristics. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective study in the Urology Division, Hospital das Clínicas, Universidade de São Paulo. METHODS: Between September 1999 and August 2002, 500 fertile men requesting a vasectomy for sterilization purposes were asked to provide a semen sample before the vasectomy. We evaluated the effects of age, sexual abstinence, seasonality, smoking and coffee consumption on semen characteristics. RESULTS: Compared with World Health Organization values, 87.2% of the patients presented sperm morphology below the normal level. A significant decline in semen volume, sperm motility and sperm morphology in patients over 45 years of age was observed. In patients with 5 days or more of abstinence, there was reduced sperm motility. The lowest values for sperm concentration, motility and morphology were observed in summer and the highest in winter. No differences in semen parameters relating to smoking were detected. Patients who drank six or more cups of coffee per day presented higher sperm motility. CONCLUSIONS: Our sample had a very low percentage of normal sperm morphology. Only sperm morphology showed a high abnormality rate. Differences in semen parameters with regard to age, length of sexual abstinence, seasonality and coffee consumption were identified. No differences relating to smoking were detected.

Abstract The aim of the study was to compare the quality and quantity parameters of semen in male lake minnow, Eupallasella percnurus (Pallas, 1814), from six Polish populations. Substantial differences among the populations were found in milt volume (36–112 µl) and sperm concentration (4.7–8.0 × 109 ml−1). Mean values for sperm motility were similar; however, there were population-related differences in sperm velocity measured with VSL (96.3–127 µm s−1). Despite this, the quality of semen in all cases was high and appropriate for both artificial reproduction and cryopreservation.


This study evaluated the variation in semen characteristics between two individual Murrah buffalo bulls. Two hundred and ninety semen samples were involved in this study. The results showed that most of the semen had a milky white color with moderate consistency. The Bull B1 tended to have higher proportion of creamy color and moderate consistency than the Bull B2. The ejaculatory volume is varied (P<0.01) between Bull B1 and Bull B2. However, semen pH and sperm concentration of Bull B1 and B2 were equal (P>0.05). The individual bull had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on sperm motility of fresh semen. The individual variation (P<0.05) also found on sperm motility of before freezing. Whereas, sperm motility of post-thawing semen and recovery rate value were not significantly influenced (P>0.05). Moreover, it was found that the frozen semen production differed (P<0.01) between two individual bulls, with bull B1 had higher production than the bull B2. This study clearly demonstrates that the frozen semen production of Murrah buffalo is highly dependent on the individual bull. However, the variation in frozen semen production between two bulls studied here is still qualified to be used for artificial insemination.

Effect of penicillin- ciprofloxacin combinations on some semen characteristics and bacterial contaminants of diluted bull semen was determined and compared with those of penicillin- streptomycin combinations. Sperm motility, percentage of dead and abnormal spermatozoa and survival index did not differ significantly for penicillin (1000 IU) and ciprofloxacin (125, 250, 500, 1000 ug) combinations per milliliter of diluted bull semen from those of penicillin (1000 I.U) and streptomycin (500 ug) combination / ml. Each penicillin ciprofloxacin combination effectively controlled bacterial growth. However penicillin streptomycin combination did not effectively control the growth. Accordingly, the combination of penicillin- ciprofloxacin seems to be a satisfactory substituent for penicillin- streptomycin combination for controlling bacterial contaminants in diluted bull semen without impairing semen characteristics.

The aim of the present study was to investigate and compare the impact of the breeding (BS) and non-breeding (NBS) seasons on scrotal circumference, and native and post-thaw semen characteristics in Karayaka rams. Six (6) Karayaka rams were used as semen donors, and ejaculates were collected with the aid of an artificial vagina during the BS (October-November) and NBS (April-May). Interestingly, sperm freezability was found to be higher in the NBS, when compared to the BS, and the sperm motility rate (36.00±2.74%, 55.0±3.24%) and percentage of abnormal sperm (44.00±1.90%, 57.00±2.09%) were found to significantly differ with season (P<0.05). In conclusion, the post-freezing sperm motility was better during the non-breeding season. Post-thaw sperm abnormality was higher during non-breading season. However, if ram semen is used fresh for AI, it can be collected and used during both during the breeding and non-breeding season.
