Reinforced concrete wide beams (WBS) have been used in construction buildings because its provide many advantages; reducing the reinforcement congestion, reducing the quantity of the required formwork, providing simplicity for replication, and decreasing the storey height. The current study presents the results of four full-scale wide RC beams in order to study their shear behavior and investigate the effectiveness of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) when using as shear reinforcement to improve the shear capacity of wide RC beams, one these beams was fabricated by (ANSYS) program this beam was unstrengthened with CFRP and without stirrups (control beam), the other two beams was strengthened with vertical and inclined CFRP sheet without stirrups and the last beam reinforced with shear stirrups (WBS). All beams casted with normal concrete strength (30 MPa), simply supported and under two point loads. The performances of these beams were measured in terms of; ultimate load, crack patterns, concrete and steel strains, deflection, and mode of failure. The results showed an increasing in ultimate load of strengthened beams with inclined, vertical CFRP and beam with shear reinforcement by (19.9%), (7.14%) and (39.8%) respectively as compared with the control beam, and this results means possibility of replacing the internal shear reinforcement with externally bonded CFRP.

Shear strength and stiffness of fire-damaged reinforced concrete (RC) beams were researched. The nonlinear finite element method (FEM) was developed to simulate shear strength of fire-damaged RC beams. Considering mechanical properties deterioration of concrete and steel reinforcing bar, the parameters of fire-damaged RC beams, including fire exposure time, shear span to depth ratios, concrete strength, diameters of stirrups and spacing of stirrups, were analyzed. Based on numerical analysis, the change of shear strength and stiffness of fire-damaged RC beams were identified. The results showed that shear strength and stiffness of fire-damaged RC beams changed under different parameters. With increase of fire exposure time or increase of shear span to depth ratio or decrease of concrete strength, shear strength and stiffness of fire-damaged RC beams descended obviously. With decrease of diameters of stirrups or increase of spacing of stirrups, shear strength of fire-damaged RC beams descended gradually, but stiffness of fire-damaged RC beams had little change.

Reinforcement corrosion exhibits an adverse effect on the shear strength of reinforced concrete structures. In order to investigate the effects of chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel on the shear behavior and failure pattern of reinforced concrete beams, a total of 24 reinforced concrete beams with different concrete strength grades and arrangements of stirrups were fabricated, among which 22 beams were subjected to accelerated corrosion to achieve different degrees of reinforcement corrosion. The failure pattern, crack propagation, load–displacement response, and ultimate strength of these beams were investigated under a standard four-point loading test in this study. Extensive comparative analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of the concrete strength, shear span-to-depth ratio, and stirrup type on the shear behavior of the corroded reinforced concrete beams. The results show that increasing the stirrup yielding strength is more effective in improving the shear strength of corroded reinforced concrete beams than that of concrete compressive strength. In terms of three types of stirrups, the shear strength of the beams with deformed HRB-335 is least sensitive to stirrup corrosion, followed by the beams with smooth HPB-235 and the beams with deformed HRB-400. The effect of the different stirrups on the shear strength depends on the corrosion degree of stirrup and shear span-to-depth ratio of the beam. The predicted results of shear strength of corroded reinforced concrete beams by a proposed analytical model are well consistent with the experimental results.

The axial compressive behaviour of an innovative type of square concrete filled steel tube (CFST) column to reinforced concrete (RC) beam joint was experimentally investigated in this paper. The innovative joint was designed such that (i) the steel tubes of the CFST columns were completely interrupted in the joint region, (ii) the longitudinal reinforcements from the RC beams could easily pass through the joint area and (iii) a reinforcement cage, including a series of reinforcement meshes and radial stirrups, was arranged in the joint area to strengthen the mechanical performance of the joint. A two-stage experimental study was conducted to investigate the behaviour of the innovative joint under axial compression loads, where the first stage of the tests included three full-scale innovative joint specimens subjected to axial compression to assess the feasibility of the joint detailing and propose measures to further improve its axial compressive behaviour, and the second stage of the tests involved 14 innovative joint specimens with the improved detailing to study the effect of the geometric size of the joint, concrete strength and volume ratio of the steel meshes on the bearing strengths of the joints. It was generally found from the experiments that (i) the innovative joint is capable of achieving the design criterion of the ‘strong joint-weak member’ with appropriate designs, and (ii) by decreasing the height factor and increasing the volume ratio of the steel meshes, the axial compressive strengths of the joints significantly increased, while the increase of the length factor is advantageous but limited to the resistances of the joint specimens. Because of the lack of existing design methods for the innovative joints, new design expressions were proposed to calculate the axial compression resistances of the innovative joints subjected to bearing loads, with the local compression effect, the confinement effect provided by the multi-layers of steel meshes and the height effect of concrete considered. It was found that the proposed design methods were capable of providing accurate and safe resistance predictions for the innovative joints.

There have been few reports on shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with corroded stirrups, and the influence of stirrup corrosion has yet to be identified. Given this background, experience was carried out to investigate the shear behavior of RC beams containing corroded stirrups. Investigation results indicate that if the percentage local maximum mass loss is below 35%, there is little influence on the load-carrying mechanism. The concrete shear resistance seems to change little and the shear capacity can be calculated by just taking into consideration the reduction in stirrup shear resistance. It is also found that the anchorage conditions of the stirrups have a predominant influence on the shears of RC beams.
