In July–August of three different years common surface-floating bottles were set adrift at International Station E2 (49° 27' N.—4° 42' W.). With them, various types of drag-fitted bottles were also put out. The journeys accomplished are discussed, and the striking differences as between year and year in the case of the common surface floaters, and as between the different types in the same year, are commented upon in the light of the prevailing winds. An inter-relationship of great simplicity is deduced between wind speed and the rate of travel of simple surface floating bottles up-Channel and across the North Sea from the results of experiments carried out in four different summers.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the TiO2 nanotubes growth and the variation in its diameter to improve the surface properties of Ti-7.5Mo to use for biomedical applications. For the nanotubes TiO2 growth, the samples were anodized in glycerol and ammonium fluoride and divided according to the anodizing potential at 5V to 10V and 24 hour time. The surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray analysis (XRD) and contact angle measurements. The average tube diameter, ranging in size from 13 to 23 nm, was found to increase with increasing anodizing voltage. It was also observed a decrease in contact angle in accordance with the increase in the anodizing potential. The X-ray analysis showed the presence of anatase phase in samples whose potential was 10V and this condition represents a simple surface treatment for Ti-7.5Mo alloy that has high potential for biomedical applications.

This article presents a process review of the commonly available laser surface modification techniques for surface property enhancement. This is reinforced with the specific case treatment of research trends in relation to commonly treated materials. The progression from simple surface modification to the production of components with multifunctional characteristics known as functionally graded material is discussed in combination with emerging research focus on the computational simulation of laser surface modification for optimization of process dynamics.
