Factors affecting the accumulation of phytoplankton biomass in Irish estuaries and nearshore coastal waters: A conceptual model

AbstractA coastal front was detected in the eastern Guangdong (EGD) coastal waters during a downwelling-favorable wind period by using the diffuse attenuation coefficient at 490 nm (Kd(490)). Long-term satellite data, meteorological data and hydrographic data collected from 2003 to 2017 were jointly utilized to analyze the environmental factors affecting coastal fronts. The intensities of the coastal fronts were found to be associated with the downwelling intensity. The monthly mean Kd(490) anomalies in shallow coastal waters less than 25 m deep along the EGD coast and the monthly mean Ekman pumping velocities retrieved by the ERA5 dataset were negatively correlated, with a Pearson correlation of − 0.71. The fronts started in October, became weaker and gradually disappeared after January, extending southwestward from the southeastern coast of Guangdong Province to the Wanshan Archipelago in the South China Sea (SCS). The cross-frontal differences in the mean Kd(490) values could reach 3.7 m−1. Noticeable peaks were found in the meridional distribution of the mean Kd(490) values at 22.5°N and 22.2°N and in the zonal distribution of the mean Kd(490) values at 114.7°E and 114.4°E. The peaks tended to narrow as the latitude increased. The average coastal surface currents obtained from the global Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) showed that waters with high nutrient and sediment contents in the Fujian and Zhejiang coastal areas in the southern part of the East China Sea could flow into the SCS. The directions and lengths of the fronts were found to be associated with the flow advection.

This work presents a conceptual model aimed at explaining factors affecting the formation of effective patient-doctor-computer communication at the primary care clinic. The authors define a new construct – patient-doctor-computer communication (PDCC), aimed to replace the traditional concept of dyad patient-doctor communication (PDC). PDC has been characterized as one of the most significant factors affecting healthcare outcomes. To better understand PDCC and its antecedents, the authors integrate theories from the patient-centered care and the Information Systems domains and suggest that the characteristics of the EMR, the user (doctor) and the task determine the doctor's perception of fit between the EMR and the medical task, which in turn positively affects PDCC. The suggested conceptual model contributes to both theory and practice. On the theoretical side, it opens several new research trajectories. For practice, the model implies that there is a need for a tighter collaboration between experts from both the information systems and medicine domains in designing EMR systems that are aligned with and support the medical task at hand.

PurposeThis study examines the impact of attitudes toward fashion influencers (FIs) on brand attitude and consumer purchase intention. It also aims to identify factors affecting consumers' attitudes toward FIs.Design/methodology/approachTo achieve this goal, the authors propose a conceptual model that combines the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and theoretical outcomes of prior literature related to influencer marketing. Based on data collected from 610 Moroccan respondents, the authors empirically test the conceptual model using a partial least squares (PLS) estimation.FindingsThis study illustrates that attitudes toward FIs positively impact brand attitude and consumer purchase intention. The authors also demonstrate that perceived credibility, trust, perceived behavioral control, perceived subjective norms, perceived expertise and perceived congruence positively impact attitudes toward FIs.Practical implicationsThe study findings help marketers and advertisers in the fashion industry to understand how influencer marketing contributes to consumer purchase intention. They also allow marketers to understand factors explaining attitudes toward FIs and therefore better select influencers capable of creating purchase intentions among existing and potential customers.Originality/valueThe present paper bridges a gap pertaining to antecedents and factors that impact attitudes toward FIs and consumer purchase intention. To the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to investigate the impact of attitudes toward influencers on both brand attitude and purchase intention in the fashion industry.

Mobile advertising holds strong promises to become the most highly targeted advertising medium offering new ways to target messages to users. By utilizing mobile advertising, companies can run marketing campaigns targeted to tens of thousands of people with a fraction of the costs and time in comparison to other direct marketing mediums. However, as mobile advertising is a novel approach, many aspects of it still need further investigation. Little is known regarding the effectiveness of mobile advertising campaigns and the factors contributing to their success. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the advertising space and its influencing factors. First, the study investigates factors that influence mobile advertising from both the industry’s and consumer’s point of view. Second, based on a review of previous studies in the field, the author proposes a conceptual model for mobile advertising, which categorizes the factors in different groups and provides a holistic view of their impact in the mobile advertising space.

Some factors that may affect the aerial counts of dugongs, dolphins and turtles were examined experimentally. Tidal influence did not affect the counts of dugongs or dolphins, but those of turtles increased around high tide. A combined doubling of survey altitude and transect width reduced observed density of all three classes of animals by 50%. The counts of four observers did not differ significantly, but further data counsel caution. Overcast weather depressed counts of dugongs and turtles. Dolphin counts were affected by water surface condition, counts being lowest in choppy seas. A mark-recapture model was used on tandem observations to derive correction factors for groups of animals missed on the surface of a transect. Observers missed between 33% and 75% of dugong groups on the surface, the probability of detection decreasing with increased survey altitude and transect width. A similar range and pattern of probabilities was found for dolphins and turtles. Dugongs were censused in the coastal waters of the Northern Territory between the Daly River and Millingimbi in December 1983, an area of 28 746 km*2. Sampling intensity was 7.6%. A minimum population of 2953 � 530 (standard error) was estimated, an overall relative density of 0.11 � 0.02 km-2. A theoretical correction for submerged dugongs not seen yielded a total population estimate of 38 000, an overall density of 1.46 km-2. The distribution of dugongs in the survey area was patchy, the highest densities being associated with shallow coastal waters, sheltered bays, and large islands.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to reframe human resources' (HR) systems and practices as HR signals drawing from conceptualizations of signals. The construct of the strength of signal is developed to quantify the attributional ability of HR signals. To examine the role of HR signals in influencing employee behaviours and firm performance, human resource management (HRM)-firm performance relationship is considered as a framework to develop a firm-level conceptual model which integrates factors affecting HR signals and its consequences.Design/methodology/approachThe paper examines the existing literature on the relationship between HRM and firm performance. In the process, the paper considers the concept of HR signal and makes a case for the strength of HR signal. Finally, the paper offers a conceptual model in order to link the antecedents and consequents of HR signals.FindingsThe paper offers a conceptual model to address the gaps in the relationship between HRM and firm performance. It also brings into focus an understanding of HRM as signals and its importance in understanding firm performance.Originality/valueThe paper enriches the existing literature by examining HRM as HR signals. It adds to the literature by considering the attributional ability of HR, through the construct of the strength of HR signals.

In case of a shortage of China’s domestic timber, the research of China’s timber security has become increasingly more important. Using the pressure-state–response (PSR) conceptual model and the entropy method, the timber security of China during 1997–2017 was evaluated and analyzed to understand and master the situation of timber security in this paper. The results showed that: (1) The pressure of timber security in China during 1997–2017 was increasing in waves, with the condition of timber imports as the main factor; (2) the state of timber security in China presented a downward-then-upward tendency during 1997–2017, the main influencing factors of which were the domestic timber supply and forest resources condition; (3) responses to ensure the timber security of China almost indicated a steep rising trend, because both the timber industry technical progress index and the waste paper recovery rate improved the safety of timber in China; and (4) the changing trend of the comprehensive evaluation of timber security in China approximately agrees with that of the state evaluation, which showed that state indicators were key factors affecting the timber security of China. The pressures influencing the timber security of China are rising, while the state of timber security and the responses of the high-tech industry have been improving at a higher range than the pressures, which has led to an improvement of China’s timber security.

The hydrographic characteristics and current circulation in Terengganu and Pahang coastal waters were examined for their spatial and temporal variability based on the seasonal influence during the transition period (April 2014) and southwest monsoon (June and August, 2014). The results of this study demonstrated the presence of slightly cooler water during June and August, 2014 compared to April, 2014, which indicate the existence of coastal upwelling. Furthermore, the uplifting of isotherms towards the coast during the study trip was also a good evidence of upwelling. The current flow generated by the wind was the possible reason of the features. Furthermore, this study also makes the first attempt to observe the coupling effects between coastal upwelling and the phytoplankton biomass in Terengganu and Pahang coastal waters, which is still sparse. Interestingly, apart from the nutrient availability, the coastal upwelling was believed to influence the phytoplankton biomass at the study area.
