The Impact

The coupling effect of freeze-thaw (F-T) temperature and dynamic load on the dynamic mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of saturated yellow sandstone was experimentally investigated in this research. The dynamic compression tests on the specimen after different F-T temperatures (i.e., −5°С, −10°С, −15°С, −20°С, −30°С, and 20°С) have been carried out with split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) setup under eight F-T cycle numbers. The density and P-wave velocity of the specimens were obtained before and after the F-T tests. After the F-T tests, the specimen microstructures were examined via the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The dynamic fracture process was visualized by the high-speed camera. The particle size distribution and fragment shapes of the specimens were analyzed using a classifying screen. In addition, the energy dissipation law of specimens during the impact test was also discussed. Experimental results show that the dynamic elastic modulus, strength of the specimen, and the average particle size decrease with decreasing F-T temperature. SEM results reveal that low F-T temperature leads to severer internal damage of the specimen by inducing freeze-swell holes, interconnected cracks, and pore clusters. In addition, the fragmentation shapes of the failed specimens exhibit double-cone failure, single-side slope failure, double-side slope failure, and split failure. The energy dissipation increases gradually with increasing F-T temperature. This study helps to prevent geological disasters and optimize engineering design in cold regions.

Observation of damage evolution is of great importance to the understanding of the failure process of rock materials. High-speed DIC system is constructed and used to observe the strain field evolution of the granodiorite disc in Brazilian test. The strain fields at different load levels are analyzed based on the stain abnormality indicator (SAI) which is the ratio of the strain measured in experiment to the strain from theoretical solution in an isotropy and elastic model. SAI could be used to indicate the damage in the specimen. The process of damage and failure of the specimen in Brazilian disc test is quantitatively analyzed and deeply discussed according to the strain fields and the statistics of SAI. Experimental results in this paper show that the failure process of the disc specimen in Brazilian test is not simple crack propagation under tensile load, but a complicated damage evolution procedure.

With the development of damage mechanics, many researchers have used it to analyze the constitutive equation of concrete. Since the special environment in the cold marine regions, the offshore structures are common to subject to the comprehensive effects of freeze-thaw action and chloride erosion. This might cause concrete materials degradation and reduce the mechanical performance of concrete seriously. In this paper, based on the analysis and mechanical experiments of concrete materials under the comprehensive effects of freeze-thaw action and chloride ion erosion, the damage evolution equation of concrete elastic modulus along with the freeze-thaw cycles and chloride ion contents was established. The effects of chloride ion were investigated during the process of concrete degradation. According to the damage evolution equation, a new constitutive equation of concrete under freeze-thaw action and chloride erosion was established. And then, by means of the element simulation analysis of concrete beams when subjected to the comprehensive actions, the feasibility and applicability of the equation was examined and discussed. In this equation, both the freeze-thaw action and chloride ion erosion were considered together. It will be more suitable for analyzing the durability of concrete structures in the real cold marine regions. It will also provide some references for concrete constitutive theory.

The energy dissipation usually occurs during rock failure, which can demonstrate the meso failure process of rock in a relatively accurate way. Based on the results of conventional triaxial compression experiments on the Jinping marble, a numerical biaxial compression model was established by PFC2D to observe the development of the micro-cracks and energy evolution during the test, and then the laws of crack propagation, energy dissipation and damage evolution were analyzed. The numerical simulation results indicate that both the crack number and the total energy dissipated during the loading process increase with confining pressures, which is basically consistent with the experiment results. Two damage variables were presented in terms of the density from other researchers’ results and energy dissipation from numerical simulation, respectively. The energy-based damage variable varies with axial strain in the shape of “S,” and approaches one more closely than that based on density at the final failure period. The research in the rock failure from the perspective of energy may further understand the mechanical behavior of rocks.

This paper introduces the principle of minimum energy dissipation and its general procedures to establish development equation of internal variable. With the accepted viewpoint that the damage is only mechanics of energy dissipation during the rockburst and utilizing the total strength criterion based on released strain energy, the general damage evolution equation is deduced. Compared with the traditional research method of damage evolution equation, this method has universal and objective characteristics.
