Biodiversitas 21: 1730-1734. A karst area of Southern Gombong at altitudes of 0-500 m has a porous substrate whose soil content decreases as the altitude gets higher toward the top of the hill. This area is characterized by poor soil nutrient, but it has high CaCO3 and pH, which is not a favorable habitat for many species of termites which depend on soil substrate, as source of nutrient for community development, especially soil-feeding termites, as habitat for fungi as secondary daily diet, and as a stabilizer of the nest humidity. The aims of this research were to determine the diversity of termites along the altitudinal gradient in this karst area, and to determine the correlation between altitude and the termite diversity. The area was divided into 5 segments based on the altitudes, i.e., 0-100 m, 100-200 m, 200-300 m, 300-400 m, and 400-500 m. In each segment, a transect belt, 100 m long and 2 m wide, was made. Each transect was divided into 20 sections. Termites were sampled from living trees, branches, bark, litter and soil for 30 minutes per person in each section. The data were analyzed to determine the Shannon-Wienner diversity index (H¢), Shannon-Evenness index (E), and Simpson's Dominance index, and to find the correlation between the species diversity and altitude. The results showed that the termite diversity in the study site was low. Only four termite species were found with the indexes of diversity (H’), evenness (E), and dominance (D) of 1.01, 0.73 and 0.44 respectively. There was no linear correlation between termite diversity and altitude; the highest diversity was found in the middle altitudes, following the mid-domain effect model.

At present the grasslands in the conservation areas are often degraded folowing the abandonment of the pasture and it is necessary to restore them. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the grasslands after the ecological restoration and phytoremediation by different methods. In 2004 the experiment was established on degraded sites at locality Low Tatras National Park (1 126 m a.s.l.) with three treatments (U – unmanaged control, C – managed by cutting, CS – managed by seeding and cutting). In 2013 on C treatment we noticed the increase of the number of species (threefold), the increase of the coverage of plants (twofold) and also the significant increase of the species diversity in comparison with the year 2004. On CS treatment the species diversity has decreased slightly but the forage value has increased more than twofold since 2004. U treatment has remained without changes. The results show the method of seeding the autochthonous species is highly appropriate to increase the forage value of grassland. Spearman correlations between environmental factors (p ≤ 0.05) prove the effect of treatment on the amount of P-soil, P-fyt, K-soil and K-fyt, which show strong negative correlation with the time. On the other hand number of species and EGQ (The evaluation of the grassland quality)correlate with time positively (p ≤ 0.05). The restoration by the mowing is recommended on sites, where the increase of diversity is important. Legumes, C, grasses, K-soil, EGQ, number of species, P-soil, time, dry matter hit the variability of the species significantly (to 96.80% of the total variability). The strongest effect on the overall variability of species had legumes, which is 61% of the total variability. Cutting explain 26% of the variability. The soil in the Low Tatras National Park was recovered to the original state through the reduction of soil nutrient – phytoremediation.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan kondisi edafik, hubungan antara kondisi edafik dan keanekaragaman organisme tanah, serta perbedaan keanekaragaman organisme tanah pada berbagai ekosistem rhizosfer gulma Siam (Chromolaena odorata) yang tumbuh di lahan vulkanik, pesisir, dan karst. Penelitian dilakukan dengan mengambil sampel tanah dari ekosistem rhizosfer gulma Siam di lahan vulkanik, karst, dan pesisir Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta; mengamati komposisi organisme tanah di laboratorium, yaitu collembola, nematoda, dan mikoriza. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tanah pada rhizosfer gulma Siam yang tumbuh di lahan karst menunjukkan tingkat kesuburan tertinggi yang ditunjukkan oleh kandungan N, K, dan C-organik tanah, sedangkan tanah pesisir memiliki kandungan P tertinggi. Tekstur tanah pada rhizosfer gulma Siam lebih berpengaruh terhadap keanekaragaman organisme tanah dibandingkan kandungan hara tanah dan sifat tanah lainnya yang diteliti. Keragaman organisme tanah rhizosfer gulma Siam lebih besar di lahan pesisir dibandingkan di lahan karst dan vulkanik. Implikasi dari hasil tersebut adalah bahwa tanah dengan tekstur berpasir akan lebih bermanfaat bagi pertumbuhan gulma Siam dengan keanekaragaman organisme rhizosfer yang lebih tinggi.ORGANISM DIVERSITY IN THE RHIZOSPHERE OF SIAM WEEDS IN VOLCANIC, COASTAL AND KARST LANDThe research aims to compare the edaphic condition, the relationship between the edaphic condition and soil organism diversity, and the differences of soil organism diversity in different rhizosphere ecosystems of Siam weed growing in volcanic, coastal and karts areas. The research was conducted by taking soil samples from the Siam weed rhizosphere ecosystems in volcanic, karst and coastal areas of the Special Region of Yogyakarta and observing the composition of the soil organisms in the laboratory, including collembola, nematode, and mycorrhiza. The results find that soil from rhizosphere of Siam weed growing in karst area shows the highest level of fertility indicated by the N, K, and C-organic contents of the soil, whereas soil from coastal area has the highest P content. Soil texture in the rhizosphere of Siam weed has more effect on the diversity of soil organisms than the soil nutrient content and other soil properties investigated. The diversity of soil organisms of Siam weed rhizosphere is greater in coastal area than those in karst and volcanic areas. The implication of the results is that soil with a sandy texture will be more beneficial for the growth of Siam weed with a higher diversity of rhizosphere organisms

Constructing the ecological security pattern is imperative to stabilize ecosystem services and sustainable development coordination of the social economy and ecology. This paper focuses on the Karst region in southeastern Yunnan, which is ecologically fragile. This paper selects the main types of ecosystem services and identifies the ecological source using hot spot analysis for Guangnan County. An inclusive consideration of the regional ecologic conditions and the rocky desertification formation mechanism was made. The resistance factor index system was developed to generate the basic resistance surface modified by the ecological sensitivity index. The Ant algorithm and Kernel density analysis were used to determine ecological corridor range and ecological restoration points that constructed the ecological security pattern of Guangnan County. The results demonstrated that, firstly, there were twenty-three sources in Guangnan County, with a total area of 1292.77 km2, accounting for 16.74% of the total. The forests were the chief ecological sources distributed in the non-Karst area, where Bamei Town, Yangliujing Township and Nasa Town had the highest distribution. Secondly, the revised resistance value is similar to “Zhe (Zhetu Township)-Lian (Liancheng Town)-Yang (Yangliujing Township)-Ban (Bambang Township)”. The values were lower in the north and higher in the south, which is consistent with the regional distribution of Karst. Thirdly, the constructed ecological security pattern of the “Source-Corridor-Ecological restoration point” paradigm had twenty-three ecological corridors. The chief ecological and potential corridor areas were 804.95 km2 and 621.2 km2, respectively. There are thirty-eight ecological restoration points mainly distributed in the principal ecological corridors and play a vital role in maintaining the corridor connectivity between sources. The results provide guidance and theoretical basis for the ecological security patterns construction in Karst areas, regional ecologic security protection and sustainable development promotion.

The island marble butterfly (Euchloe ausonides insulanus), thought to be extinct throughout the 20th century until re-discovered on a single remote island in Puget Sound in 1998, has become the focus of a concerted protection effort to prevent its extinction. However, efforts to “restore” island marble habitat conflict with efforts to “restore” the prairie ecosystem where it lives, because of the butterfly’s use of a non-native “weedy” host plant. Through a case study of the island marble project, we examine the practice of ecological restoration as the enactment of particular norms that define which species are understood to belong in the place being restored. We contextualize this case study within ongoing debates over the value of “native” species, indicative of deep-seated uncertainties and anxieties about the role of human intervention to alter or manage landscapes and ecosystems, in the time commonly described as the “Anthropocene.” We interpret the question of “what plants and animals belong in a particular place?” as not a question of scientific truth, but a value-laden construct of environmental management in practice, and we argue for deeper reflexivity on the part of environmental scientists and managers about the social values that inform ecological restoration.

The aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between vegetation indices of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and soil nutrient of oil palm plantation at Felcra Nasaruddin Bota in Perak for future sustainable environment. The satellite image was used and processed in the research. By Using NDVI, the vegetation index was obtained which varies from -1 to +1. Then, the soil sample and soil moisture analysis were carried in order to identify the nutrient values of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K). A total of seven soil samples were acquired within the oil palm plantation area. A regression model was then made between physical condition of the oil palms and soil nutrients for determining the strength of the relationship. It is hoped that the risk map of oil palm healthiness can be produced for various applications which are related to agricultural plantation.
