AbstractThis article discusses two prominent and seemingly very different schools of thought about the historical relationship of the West to Islam—the first of which we might call a 'clash of civilizations' and the second an 'alliance'—in order to show the common roots of both in Christian dialectics. As an example of the first school, the article focuses on Pope Benedict XVI's 2006 Regensburg lecture on the European synthesis of 'faith' and 'reason,' with its attempt to define Islam as a religion of faith and not of reason. As an example of the second, it focuses on five centuries of European debate over the contribution of Arabic poetry to the birth of a modern and rational European poetic subjectivity. The article suggests that dialectics of inclusion and exclusion are inseparable from each other, and concludes by pointing to some contemporary political implications of this inseparability.

The present paper is the result of a study undertaken to establish the relationship of certain marine envlromental factors and the benthic flora of the Caribbean littoral of Colombia. For the purpose of this study this coastal bands has been divided in two Areas. Area 1 is found between Cabo Tiburón and the mouth of the Río Magdalena, and is characterized by warm waters with very small fluctuations of the surface temperature. Area 2 ranges from the mouth of the Río Magdalena to Castilletes, and its waters are affected by a coastal upwelling with a locality of maximum intensity at the West of Península de Guajira. As a result of the presence of this upwelling there are considerable variations in the physical and chemical factors acting upon the benthic flora, there established for very short periods or all year round, as well as determining the absence of some genera and species typical of these latitudes. The parameters used for detecting this oceanographic phenomenon are given by Díaz-Piferrer (1967 a) for Venezuela. To the biological indicators cited by this author for Venezuela, the present writer adds the brown alga Ectocarpus confervoides (Roth) Le Jolis, which was found in the area of upwelling in Colombia. A comparative study of these indicators plants with those of Venezuela is given in the present paper. Similarities and differences were found to be caused by the over-run of the warm counter current on the Colombian upwelling; by the different forces of the Caribbean Current and Guayana Current, all of which lead to the related oceanographic phenomenon; tfie climatic factors; the topography of the sea bottom and the influence of the continental waters over these upwelling.

Since the 1940s, the city centre of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar has suffered from several flooding episodes from the several tributaries of ca n’Amer creek. Five lives lost and a significant impact on the population were the result of the most relevant flood in the series that occurred in 2018. In this paper, an analysis of the historical relationship of the village with floods, the answer provided by the administration to those floods, and the geographic setting and the anthropic actions on the land are considered. Using the data collected by direct observation, witnesses, and graphs and fieldwork, a thorough investigation of the volume, flow, direction and levels of water has been developed. This translates into an exhaustive mapping of the event, discriminating the hydraulic behaviour in each of the affected roads and showing the sequential development of the flood. Flooding is a combination of severe stream flows, avulsion processes and angular sections that combine with infraestructures that interfere with the flow direction and prevent its reintegration into the main channel and where the streets become active channels.

Indians came to the Caribbean under the system of indenture to augment the labour shortage in the plantations around the middle of the nineteenth century. Rather than returning after the contractual period, many Indians stayed on, accepting the Caribbean as their new found home. Thus began a symbiotic relationship of the Indian culture with the Caribbean society in the new habitat. This paper outlines the lives of the overseas Indians with reference to aspects of marriage, including the selection of spouses, different kinds of marriage and its dissolution. The paper also discusses the institution of family and its internal mechanisms in terms of patterns of authority, inheritance, conflicts, the position of women and the system of kinship. The overseas Indians moved from tradition to modernity, and from custom to legality. There was also resistance to change and deviations as some values struggled to be reinforced, while others were discarded. On the whole, kinship relations remained of vital importance for the sake of mutual cooperation and social intercourse in a foreign land. Interpersonal relations helped to regulate and standardize behaviour. In providing these accounts, this paper seeks to portray the persistence and change of traditional Indian social intuitions and customs among the overseas community in the Caribbean.

Support for Brexit in Wales looks similar to that in England. The turn-out in Wales was very high, the same as the UK average and, as in Brexit-voting parts of England, there was strong anti-immigration sentiment in Brexit-voting areas of Wales, with a feeling that immigration is keeping wages down. This chapter, however, focuses on several important differences: it explores what is distinctive about support for Brexit in Wales. Approaches to Brexit are different in Wales due to the historical relationship of Wales to England, and the distinct social structure and politics of Wales – specifically, its elite and its distinct politics. In England, those with the strongest sense of English national identity voted most heavily for Brexit, whilst those who identified as British more than English tended to vote Remain. Thus, in order to understand Brexit in Wales, the chapter analyses and explains Brexit voting and the nature of elite agents and identities in contemporary Wales.

A dimensionless parameter, Su, is proposed which enables a clear presentation of vortex-induced vibration response data in sheared and uniform flows. The ability of the parameter to account for the effects of damping, flow velocity and power-in length is demonstrated with response data from an unusual set of experiments conducted by SHELL Development Co. The historical relationship of the new parameter to the earlier work of Owen Griffin is also presented.
