Background: Circulating endothelial cells (CECs), originated form endothelial progenitors (EPCs) are mature cells not associated with vessel walls and detached from the endothelium. Normally, they are present in insignificant amounts in the peripheral blood of healthy individuals. On the other hand, elevated CECs and EPCs levels have been reported in the peripheral blood of patients with different types of cancers and other diseases. Objective: This review aims to provide an overview on the characterization of CECs and EPCs, to describe isolation methods and to identify the potential role of these cells in hematological diseases and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Methods: We performed a detailed search of peer-reviewed literature using keywords related to CECs, EPCs, allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and hematological diseases (hemoglobinopathies, hodgkin and non-hodgkin lymphoma, acute leukemia, myeloproliferative syndromes, chronic lymphocytic leukemia). Results: CECs and EPCs are potential biomarkers for several clinical conditions involving endothelial turnover and remodeling, such as in hematological diseases. These cells may be involved in disease progression and in the neoplastic process. Moreover, CECs and EPCs are probably involved in endothelial damage which is a marker of several complications following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Conclusion: This review provides information about the role of CECs and EPCs in hematological malignancies and shows their implication in predicting disease activity as well as improving HSCT outcomes.

Ibrutinib is a small-molecule inhibitor of Bruton’s tyrosine kinase, an enzyme central in B cell development. It is indicated as a therapy for certain hematological diseases such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but also exerts off-target effects on several receptors and kinases. In this paper, we hypothesize that ibrutinib may suppress the tumor marker CA-125 in ovarian cancer. The hypothesis is based on an observation of CA-125 normalization in a patient with low-grade serous ovarian cancer who received ibrutinib for concurrent CLL. We propose a mechanistic model explaining this possible drug effect as a foundation for further research.

Introduction. Though, in developed countries, laparoscopy is now a gold standard for splenectomy, we are lacking in this aspect in the eastern world. Splenectomy has mostly been performed by open surgery in our region. This is our effort to introduce laparoscopic splenectomy in our country.Methods. This is a retrospective cohort study done in patients presenting to hematology and surgery department of our hospital who underwent laparoscopic splenectomy for hematological diseases from January 2013 to December 2016.Results. There were 50 patients (38 females, 12 males). The diagnoses were idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in 31, (steroid/azathioprine-resistant, steroid dependent), hereditary spherocytosis in 9, alpha-thalassemia in 3, beta-thalassemia in 2, autoimmune hemolytic anemia in 4, and isolated splenic tuberculosis in 1. Average platelet counts preoperatively were62000±11000/mm3 (range 52000-325000/mm3). The mean operative time was130±49minutes (range 108-224 min). The mean postoperative stay was4±2.11days (range 3-9 days). Laparoscopic splenectomy could be completed in 45 (90%) patients.Conclusion. Laparoscopic splenectomy could be successfully contemplated in patients with hematological diseases, especially if spleen is normal or only mildly enlarged, and is an advantageous alternative to open splenectomy. Absence of ideal resources has not limited our progress in minimal access approach.

Trichosporon species are emerging as opportunistic pathogens that mainly affect immunocompromised patients. Patients with onco-hematological diseases usually present with fungemia by Trichosporon species, especially by T. asahii. Reports of this infection by other species of the genus are uncommon. Thus, in this paper, we present a case of T. inkin fungemia in a 39-year-old female patient with intestinal obstruction and absence of malignant hematological diseases. The late mycological diagnosis, the ineffective control of her pre-existing conditions and consequent failure to start antifungal therapy were the contributing factors for the patient's death.

There is paucity of information about the prevalence of hematological disorders in Yemen and neighboring countries .This is the rst project to evaluate the relative spectrum of hematological diseases in Taiz and Ibb governorate Yemen ,by method of bone marrow examination which is considered an important valuable diagnostic tool, for evaluation and nal diagnosis of various hematological and non-hematological disorders especially when CBC and peripheral blood lm study and other investigation failed to give a diagnosis . OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the spectrum of haematological diseases diagnosed by bone marrow examination in Taiz and IBB governorates Yemen between September 2016 and October 2020 .Patients and method : A total of 1108 patients aged between (1 -100 )years old were evaluated by bone marrow examination at referral hematological center in IBB city Yemen . Relevant investigations were performed when needed. After exclusion of 98 patients with normal bone marrow ndings ,a total of 1010 patients had hematological disorders , and their data were analyzed. There were 527 (52.2 %) males and 483(47.8 %) females . A total of 655(64.9%) patients had benign hematological diseases and 355 (35.1% ) patients had malignant hematological diseases . RESULTS :A total of 138 patients had Iron deciency anemia ,107 had immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) , 92 had hypersplenism,84 had Acute lymphoblastic leukemia ,79 had Acute myeloid leukaemia, 71 had megaloblastic anemia 58 had myeloproliferative disorder , 53 had Chronic myeloid leukemia , 45 had hemolytic anemia ,45had visceral leishmaniasis. 44 had malaria, 38 had chronic lymphocytic leukemia 38 had anemia of chronic disease ,25 had aplastic anemia ,25 had myelodysplastic syndromes, ,21 had anemia of infection ,19 had congenital syndroms,7had multiple myeloma ,6 had mixed deciency anemia and 5 had metastatic deposits , 4 had myeloid leukomoid reaction ,4 had lymphoma inltration and 2 had hairy cell leukemia . Sex- and age-related distribution of the various disorders was also presented. CONCLUSION: The anemias of all types were the most frequently encountered diagnosis followed by acute and chronic leukemias , ITP , Hypersplenism , ,myeloproliferative disorder , visceral leishmaniasis , malaria, myelodysplastic syndrome and congenital syndromes respectively. The other haematological disorders were less common. These ndings are comparable with published data in previous studies done in Yemen and other developing countries

Background: Lipid accumulation in the liver, skeletal and cardiac muscle, kidneys and pancreas causes cell dysfunction, death and inflammation, a biological phenomenon named lipotoxicity. Erythrocytes participate in the transport of lipids in the circulation, and their lipidome is determined by exchange with blood components. Objective: To summarize the current knowledge regarding the effect of toxic lipid accumulation in erythrocytes Results: Erythrocyte lipidome is altered in lipotoxic diseases like fatty liver disease, heart failure, and diabetes. In addition, ceramide, lysophosphatidylcholine, lysophosphatidic acid, palmitic acid, and free cholesterol induce erythrocyte malfunction. Conclusion: Erythrocytes are an additional cell target of lipotoxicity. Further exploration of the implicated molecular mechanisms could lead to novel therapeutic targets for cardiometabolic and hematological diseases.
