Thoraco-abdominal wounds are the most severe injuries of the chest and abdomen, with mortality reaching 13–20 %. The main focus of treatment of such patients is surgical correction of the injuries. Wide range of classical and minimally invasive interventions is used for treatment of victims . The paper presents the range of views of modern researchers on the indications for laparocentesis, drainage of the pleural cavity, thoracoscopy and laparoscopy, thoracotomy and laparotomy in this pathology. The opinions of various researchers on the optimal combination of interventions and tactics of surgical treatment of victims with thoraco-abdominal wounds are presented. It is necessary to continue the search for optimal combinations of classical and minimally invasive interventions in relation to a variety of clinic situations that arise in the treatment of patients with thoraco-abdominal wounds.

Introduction. Esophageal stenosis in childhood is quite a common disease characterized by different etiology, specific clinical picture, wide range of differential diseases and a variety of approaches to its treatment.Material and methods. The review analyzes scientific literature presented in such search engines as Medline, PubMed, Cochrane Library, eLibrary, 20 years deep. The most significant works of the last century were included too. Keywords were used for search.Results. There were selected 60 literary sources which included the description of modern concepts of etiopathogenesis, classification, diagnostic and curative techniques for the treatment of esophageal stenosis in children. A particular attention is paid to the safety and effectiveness of minimally invasive endoscopic interventions (bougienage, balloon dilation) as well as to the topical application of Mitomycin C in the treatment of esophageal stenosis in children.Conclusion. Innovative endoscopic technologies applied for the restoration of the esophageal lumen seem to be promising, effective and safe. In the overwhelming majority of cases, they allow to reduce surgical aggression and avoid complex reconstructive surgeries.

The effectiveness of intense pulsed light (IPL) and laser devices is widely accepted in aesthetic dermatology for unwanted hair removal and treatment of a variety of cutaneous conditions. Overall, most comparative trials have demonstrated similar effectiveness for IPL and laser devices. Literature studies alternatively favor the IPL and laser concepts, but the incidence of severe local pain and side effects were generally lower with IPL. IPL phototherapy, already established as a sound option in photoepilation and treatment of photoaging, hyperpigmentation and other skin conditions, is also considered first choice in the phototherapy of skin vascular malformations. When treating large areas, as often required in photoepilation and many aesthetic dermatology indications, IPL technologies show advantages over laser-based devices because of their high skin coverage rate. Compared to lasers, the wide range of selectable treatment settings, though a strong advantage of IPL, may also imply some more risk of local thermal side effects, but almost only in the hands of poorly trained operators. Overall, the strongest advantages of the IPL technologies are robust technology, versatility, lower purchase price, and the negligible risk of serious adverse effects in the hands of skilled and experienced operators.

Abstract Background. Peristomal metastases are rare, but potentially associated with relevant morbidity. Surgical resection, followed by stoma relocation, represent the gold standard in most patients. We describe electrochemotherapy (ECT), a minimally invasive method for locally-enhancing drug delivery by means of electric pulses, as an alternative approach. Patient and methods. A 49-year-old man with advanced gastric cancer developed skin metastases around an ileostomy site. The ulcerated and oozing tumor growth impaired patient’s quality of life due to continuous trouble in fitting the ostomy appliance, its poor adherence and consequent stools spillage. ECT consisted of a 20-minute course under mild general sedation. A bleomycin bolus of 15 000 IU/m2 was followed by the percutaneous application of multiple, 1.5 ms -long electric pulses by means of a needle electrode. Results. Post ECT course was uneventful and the patient was discharged on the same day. After one week, tumor nodules were flattened and partial tumor regression was appreciable at one-month follow-up. More importantly, peristomal skin conditions significantly improved, thus allowing for an effective application of the ostomy appliance during the following moths, until patient’s death. Conclusions. This report suggests the feasibility of ECT as a minimally invasive approach for peristomal tumors. In selected cases, ECT, by achieving a rapid tumor control, may ensure effective ostomy management and preserve patients’ quality of life.

1. A crystalline enzyme capable of digesting yeast nucleic acid has been isolated from fresh beef pancreas. 2. The enzyme called "ribonuclease" is a soluble protein of albumin type. Its molecular weight is about 15,000. Its isoelectric point is in the region of pH 8.0. 3. Ribonuclease splits yeast nucleic acid into fragments small enough to diffuse readily through collodion or cellophane membranes. 4. The split products of digestion, unlike the undigested yeast nucleic acid, are not precipitable with glacial acetic acid or dilute hydrochloric acid. 5. The digestion of yeast nucleic acid is accompanied by a gradual formation of free acid groups without any significant liberation of free phosphoric acid. 6. Ribonuclease is stable over a wide range of pH even when heated for a short time at 100°C. Its maximum stability is in the range of pH 2.0 to 4.5. 7. Denaturation of the protein of ribonuclease by heat or alkali, or digestion of the protein by pepsin, causes a corresponding percentage loss in the enzymatic activity of the material.

Glaucoma management has changed dramatically over the last decades, through clinical advances and technological revolutions. This review discusses the latest innovations and challenges faced in the field around three major axes: minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), implantable sensors and injectable therapeutics. Indeed, the vast number of recently developed MIGS techniques has not only provided clinicians with a wide range of therapeutic options, but they have also enabled them to adjust their therapies more finely which may have contributed a more patient-centric decision-making process. Yet, despite considerable advances in the field, the wide heterogeneity in clinical trial designs blurs the surgical outcomes, specificities and indications. Thus, more high-quality data are required to make the choice of a specific MIGS procedure more than an educated guess. Beyond the scope of MIGS, the potential of IOP telemetry for self-assessment of IOP-control through implantable sensors is developing into a real option for clinicians and an empowering opportunity for patients. Indeed, providing patients with direct feedback enables them to take control and have a clearer representation of their care, in turn leading to a better control of the disease. However, there are potential issues with self-monitoring of IOP, such as increased anxiety levels induced by measured IOP fluctuations and peaks, leading to patients self-treating during IOP spikes and additional office visits. Furthermore, the advent of implantable therapeutics may soon provide yet another step towards personalized glaucoma treatment, by offering not only an efficient alternative to current treatments, but also a therapeutic option that may better adapt to patients’ lifestyle. After several decades of relative stagnation through the last century, glaucoma has now entered what many view as a golden age for the specialty. Like every revolution, this one brings its fair share of uncertainty, clinical questioning and uneasy periods of adaptation to ever-changing expectations. Yet, while it is impossible to guess what the landscape of glaucoma surgery will be like in ten or fifteen years, data suggest a bright outlook both for patients and clinicians. Abstract Endoscopic endonasal surgery is a commonly practiced minimally invasive neurosurgical operation for the treatment of a wide range of skull base pathologies including pituitary tumors. A common shortcoming of this surgery is the necessity of a third hand when the endoscope has to be handled to allow active use of both hands of the main surgeon. The robot surgery assistant NeuRoboScope system has been developed to take over the endoscope from the main surgeon's hand while providing the surgeon with the necessary means of controlling the location and direction of the endoscope. One of the main novelties of the NeuRoboScope system is its human-robot interface designs which regulate and facilitate the interaction between the surgeon and the robot assistant. The human-robot interaction design of the NeuRoboScope system is investigated in two domains: direct physical interaction and master-slave teleoperation. The user study indicating the learning curve and ease of use of the master-slave teleoperation is given and this paper is concluded via providing the reader with an outlook of possible new human-robot interfaces for the robot assisted surgery systems.

Various interventions require tissue ablation in ENT surgery. This can be achieved using a multitude of methods, but the tendency today is to use minimally invasive methods. The development of new technologies has allowed us to consider the use of coblation for tissue ablation, which is based on a chemical reaction, instead of a thermal or mechanical ablation. The technology proved to be extremely used in the field of ENT. Its indications range from functional surgery to benign or even malignant tumors and it can be used in the nose, pharynx and larynx, with probes of different length and angulation. This minimally invasive method of tissue ablation associates less scaring, a faster recovery and a lower postoperative discomfort. Although the time required for the intervention may be somewhat longer, the overall results are superior to the classical methods, considering it provides instant hemosthasis as well. We consider it to be a reliable method, fit for a wide range of indications.
