La segunda mitad del siglo XIX fue decisiva para el desarrollo de la cultura del diseño de producto. Tuvo especial importancia el debate en torno al principio del revestimiento, aunque no se trataba sólo de aclarar las relaciones entre forma y función, sino de establecer la importancia antropológica y cultural de la disciplina. Se desarrolló la idea de que había claras conexiones entre la manera en la que tratábamos los objetos de uso y el cuerpo humano, especialmente el femenino. Se estudiará esto analizando la transformación conceptual de las relaciones de la cultura con la naturaleza entre el “Elogio del maquillaje” de Charles Baudelaire y “Ornamento y delito” de Adolf Loos. [The second half of nineteenth century was decisive in the development of product design culture. It was especially important the debate about the clothing principle, although it was not only about clear up the relations between form and function but set up the discipline anthropologic and cultural relevance. It was developed the belief that there were clear connections between how we behave towards the objects of use and the human body, women’s primarily. This will be studied analysing the conceptual transformation of the relations between nature and culture from Charles Baudelaire’s “In Praise of Makeup” to Adolf Loos’ “Ornament and Crime”].

AbstractThe sentence “form follows function” is the best expression of the relationship between form and function of a product in modern product design. This implies that the form is essential to implement the function while it should be optimized and minimized for the function. Unlike general products, transformable products are designed with the intention to change the function and form of the product according to the situation. This paper presents the types and characteristics of transformable products determined by Phase Model we introduced. We collected 147 transformable product cases and analyzed them according to the change of functions and forms in each product. As a result, we classified the transformable products into four types: partial transformable product, multi-form product, multi-function product and full transformable product. We found that each type has unique characteristics with potential to drive innovation in product design field.

Product design is a type of system engineering and Furniture product form in the furniture production system plays an extremely important role. By introducing the necessity of studying on the relation of the furniture product form and modeling elements, it analyzed the contents of the furniture product form, and then it discussed in detail the relationship between furniture product form and function, material, structure, color and texture with the concept of creating the humanized form based on the philosophical perspective of “the whole and part”. In the end, it pointed out that this relationship is reasonable, sensible and effective, which can provide the effective guiding ideology and implementation way in modern society for designing furniture products which are reasonable and sensible.

This work hypothesizes that enhancing next generation products’ distinctiveness through function-form synthesis results in feasible design concepts for designers. A data mining driven methodology that searches for novel function and form candidates suitable to include in next generation product design is introduced in this work. The methodology employs a topic modeling algorithm to search for functional relationships between the current product design and designs from related/unrelated domains. Combining the current product design and candidate products’ form and function, which is acquired from related/unrelated domains, generates next generation design concepts. These resulting design concepts are not only distinct from their parent designs but are also likely to be implemented in the real world by containing novel functions and form features. A hybrid marine model, which is differentiated from both the current design and candidate products in related/unrelated domains, is introduced in the case study in order to demonstrate the proposed methodology’s potential to develop concepts for novel product domains. By comparing the form and function similarity values between generated design concepts, an existing hybrid marine model (Wing In Ground effect ship: WIG), and source products, this research verifies the feasibility of these design concepts.

STM is one of the most promising techniques available for visualizing the fine details of biomolecular structure. It has been used to map the surface topography of inorganic materials in atomic dimensions, and thus has the resolving power not only to determine the conformation of small molecules but to distinguish site-specific features within a molecule. That level of detail is of critical importance in understanding the relationship between form and function in biological systems. The size, shape, and accessibility of molecular structures can be determined much more accurately by STM than by electron microscopy since no staining, shadowing or labeling with heavy metals is required, and there is no exposure to damaging radiation by electrons. Crystallography and most other physical techniques do not give information about individual molecules.We have obtained striking images of DNA and RNA, using calf thymus DNA and two synthetic polynucleotides, poly(dG-me5dC)·poly(dG-me5dC) and poly(rA)·poly(rU).
