This work hypothesizes that enhancing next generation products’ distinctiveness through function-form synthesis results in feasible design concepts for designers. A data mining driven methodology that searches for novel function and form candidates suitable to include in next generation product design is introduced in this work. The methodology employs a topic modeling algorithm to search for functional relationships between the current product design and designs from related/unrelated domains. Combining the current product design and candidate products’ form and function, which is acquired from related/unrelated domains, generates next generation design concepts. These resulting design concepts are not only distinct from their parent designs but are also likely to be implemented in the real world by containing novel functions and form features. A hybrid marine model, which is differentiated from both the current design and candidate products in related/unrelated domains, is introduced in the case study in order to demonstrate the proposed methodology’s potential to develop concepts for novel product domains. By comparing the form and function similarity values between generated design concepts, an existing hybrid marine model (Wing In Ground effect ship: WIG), and source products, this research verifies the feasibility of these design concepts.

Customer inputs in the early stages of design can potentially lead to completely new outlooks in concept generation. We propose crowd-based co-creation as a means to this end. Our main idea is to think of the customer as a source of initial design concepts rather than a means for obtaining preferences towards designer-generated concepts. For analyzing a large collection of customer-created prototypes, we develop a framework that focuses on generating hypotheses related to customer perception of design attributes. We demonstrate our approach through a web interface to gather design requirements for a computer mouse, a bicycle seat, a pen holder, and a cola bottle. This interface was used in a crowdsourcing study with 253 users who represented potential end users for these products. Results from this study show that web-based co-creation allows designers to capture a variety of form and function-related design requirements from user-created virtual prototypes. We also found that such studies can be instrumental in identifying innovative product concepts, and gaining insights about how user perception correlates with product form. Therefore, we make the case that customer creation through distributed co-creation platforms can reinforce concept exploration in future early design processes.

Industrial and product design involves a lot of unstructured information for the generation of innovative product design ideas. However, the generation of innovative design concepts is not only time consuming but also heavily relies on the experience of product designers. Most existing systems focus mainly on the technical aspects of realizing product designs, which are inadequate to support concept generation process at the pre-design stage. In this paper, a knowledge extraction and design support system (KEDSS) is presented. The system aims at extracting key design concepts and depicting the trends of these concepts from the massive amount of unstructured design information in the open domain. A summary report, a related concept list, and concept trend graphs are produced based on the inputs of the designers' design ideas. A series of experiments have been conducted to measure the performance of the system. Moreover, the system has been successfully trial implemented as part of a public service platform for modern industrial design of injection molding machinery and equipment.

<div>In the Postmodern era there are diverse forms of architecture, which is also related to. structural and material technology that is developing so rapidly. The method used is the analysis of architectural theories to find the relationship between Function‐Form, whether: </div><div>1) The concept of Form follows Function; </div><div>2) The concept of Function follows Form; </div><div>3) The concept of Form and Function runs together. </div><div><br></div><div>The relation between the concept of Function and Form will result in the meaning of the architectural work itself. The conclusion is: in architectural design there is no exact rule whether the Function must follow the Form, or Form must follow the Function, or Function and Form run side by side, but the relationships between Function and Form merge into a single method towards the expression of architectural Form, so that this Function‐Form relationship will be interpreted by the observer towards the expression of the architectural creation itself. The findings in this study are to give architectural designers freedom regarding the relationship between Function‐Form. However, the most important thing from this relationship is that the meaning must be reflected in the expression of the form that corresponds to the relationship to be achieved. The benefit of this research is that architectural students can know more deeply the relationship between the Function‐Form that will be used in the design, and also for architect practitioners in designing the building.</div>

[The second half of nineteenth century was decisive in the development of product design culture. It was especially important the debate about the clothing principle, although it was not only about clear up the relations between form and function but set up the discipline anthropologic and cultural relevance. It was developed the belief that there were clear connections between how we behave towards the objects of use and the human body, women’s primarily. Jelambar, Grogol Petamburan, with Jelambar Baru and Wijaya Kusuma, are one united district with a high density of residential population, that have hobby and habit on culinary business, that form many culinary centers and spread unevenly until Jelambar that caused Jelambar to have no culinary center like other districts have. Pawon Jelambar is designed to resolve issues of Jelambar that has no third place that needed by the district with a high density of population; also the low intensity of culinary. However, there are so many neglected small culinary businesses, because of many factors, one of them is a less strategic location. Pawon Jelambar wants to realize Jelambar’s unconsciously need of forming a place of culinary that integrated and has a clarity, by substitute all the small culinary businesses with Pawon Jelambar, with the purpose to increase culinary needs quality of Jelambar. This project is designed through designing stages as a method of design, such as understanding the district segment of Grogol Petamburan; arranging a diagram of issues of Jelambar and issues solving concept; design concept as the result of questionnaire answers analysis; zoning and space programs; analysis of project’s site determination; site analysis. All these analyses form building mass concepts; exterior and interior design; architectural details. The design result is Pawon Jelambar that uses the design concepts, such as green contemporary design, form and function runs together, and contextualism in responding site; with variants of culinary, mini market, culinary workshops, temporary exhibition, and food gallery, as the main architectural programs. Keywords: Architecture; Culinary; Jelambar; Pawon Jelambar; Third place AbstrakJelambar, Grogol Petamburan, bersama Jelambar Baru dan Wijaya Kusuma adalah satu-kesatuan kawasan padat penduduk hunian yang memiliki hobi dan kebiasaan berdagang kuliner, sehingga muncul beberapa pusat-pusat kuliner, namun penyebarannya tidak merata sampai Jelambar, sehingga Jelambar tidak memiliki sebuah pusat kuliner layaknya di titik kawasan lain. AbstractThe sentence “form follows function” is the best expression of the relationship between form and function of a product in modern product design. This implies that the form is essential to implement the function while it should be optimized and minimized for the function. Unlike general products, transformable products are designed with the intention to change the function and form of the product according to the situation. This paper presents the types and characteristics of transformable products determined by Phase Model we introduced. We collected 147 transformable product cases and analyzed them according to the change of functions and forms in each product. As a result, we classified the transformable products into four types: partial transformable product, multi-form product, multi-function product and full transformable product. We found that each type has unique characteristics with potential to drive innovation in product design field.

Mantra in a number of literatures and studies are described as sayings or words that have function, form and can bring power. Its function can be as treatment, self-protection, charm, and so on. The language used is in the form of a blend of regional languages with Islamic sentences that provide a sacred aspect. However, there is something in the mantra, namely the theological aspect or understanding of God. The understanding of God that actually has implications for the function or power of the mantra. Thus, the purpose of this study is to describe the theological aspects in the form and function of mantra contained in the culture of the Sasak people. The method used is qualitative-ethnographic, with 2 traditional leaders, 2 shamans (medicines) and 2 mantra owners being interviewed to obtain the history and examples of mantra. The findings obtained are that mantra are utterances that have forms such as rhymes, riddles or poetry and function as treatment, self-protection, hunting and so on and can bring the power. The power that can be obtained from the mantra must be based on belief in the power of Allah SWT. This belief in the power of Allah SWT refers to the theological aspects of society which are structured in the dimensions of belief in Allah SWT, Rasul, Takdir, the supernatural things and the promises and threats of Allah SWT.

Much has been written of late on the requirements of a patient-centred hospital environment suitable for healing. So much so that, within healthcare, the theoretical concept is referred to as ‘evidence-based design’, in which – through form and function – the positive interaction and outcomes that buildings and their environments can have on the health, recovery, safety and wellbeing of patients and carers – and on the health and morale of its staff – is considered. In view of Birmingham’s new £50 million Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry opening its doors to the public earlier this year, this article provides a précis of the establishment, and illustrates how evidence-based healthcare design concepts have been woven into its design.

Innovative products are the holy grail for consumer product manufacturers. The essence of what makes a product innovative and in-demand by consumers is a nebulous subject. The research presented in this paper charts the initial steps toward computer-directed innovation in product design. A method for identifying the innovative subsystems in a product and archiving that information is formulated. The innovation information, if archived in a design repository, can support automatic concept generation that is biased toward innovative concepts. Products featured in published lists of innovative products were reverse engineered to expose the component and functional relationships and to analyze where the innovation of the product was most prevalent. A function subtraction method based on difference rewards is used to isolate innovation functions and components in order to populate a Repository of Innovative Products (RIP). The goal behind this research is to develop a method to analyze innovative products such that they may aid in the innovation of future ideas outputted by the Design Repository. This methodology will be used in undergraduate design classes to teach how to factor in creativity and innovation in the early stages of engineering concept design.
