In the last decade and a half, thin film research, particularly research into problems associated with epitaxy, has developed from a simple empirical process of determining the conditions for epitaxy into a complex analytical and experimental study of the nucleation and growth process on the one hand and a technology of very great importance on the other. During this period the thin films group of the University of Chile has studied the epitaxy of metals on metal and insulating substrates. The development of the group, one of the first research groups in physics to be established in the country, has parallelled the increasing complexity of the field. The elaborate techniques and equipment now needed for research into thin films may be illustrated by considering the plant and facilities of this group as characteristic of a good system for the controlled deposition and study of thin films.

AbstractA simple and cost-effective electrochemical synthesis of carbon-based nanomaterials for electrochemical biosensor is of great challenge these days. Our study describes a single-step electrochemical deposition strategy to prepare a nanocomposite of electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ErGO), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and polypyrrole (PPy) in an aqueous solution of pH 7.0 for dopamine (DA) detection. The ErGO/MWCNTs/PPy nanocomposites show enhanced electrochemical performance due to the strong π–π* stacking interactions among ErGO, MWCNTs, and PPy. The efficient interaction of the nanocomposites is confirmed by evaluating its physical and electrochemical characteristics using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and amperometry. The deposited nanocomposites are highly stable on the substrates and possess high surface areas, which is vital to improve the sensitivity and selectivity for DA detection. The controlled deposition of the ErGO/MWCNTs/PPy nanocomposites can provide enhanced electrochemical detection of DA. The sensor demonstrates a short time response within 2 s and is a highly sensitive approach for DA detection with a dynamic linear range of 25–1000 nM (R2 = 0.999). The detection limit is estimated to be 2.3 nM, and the sensor sensitivity is calculated to be 8.96 μA μM−1 cm−2, with no distinct responses observed for other biological molecules.

Ion beam controlled deposition (IBCD) or ion beam assisted deposition (IB AD) of Ti(C,N,O) films has been investigated much in the last decade for both the advantage of this advanced technology and the promising properties of such materials. Ti(C,N,O) films are various solid solutions of interstitial compounds TiC, TiN and TiO of F.C.C structure with lattice constants lying between the values of the pure compounds. Some content of oxygen improves their wear resistance due to the lower fn;e enthalpies of such films in comparison with pure TiC and TiN films [1]. Many so-synthesizcd titanium carbide and titanium nitride films reported in published papers were actually of this sort as they often had more or less oxygen content from residual gas in vacuum. A number of papers were contributed to depict the texture and composition dependence of film on the arrival ratio of assisting ions versus deposited atoms (AR) as well as their mechanical properties [2–6]. However, the film formation mechanism in IBCD isn't quite clear yet, especially for cases with assisting ion energy of several to tens of keV. During a course to synthesize Ti(C,N,O) films by IBCD with the two beam technique, datum were accumulated. Based on a part of it, a previous paper on ion beam governed preferential growth in IBCD has been published [7]. This paper was aimed to search for the origin of ion bombardment effect on film hardness.

We report core/shell structured magnetically recyclable catalysts with a well-defined spherical morphology. Using these as catalysts for the oxidation of HMF, a 100% yield of FDCA could be achieved in just 4 h at 90 °C in water .
