Fundamental Research into Thin Films in a Developing Country

In the last decade and a half, thin film research, particularly research into problems associated with epitaxy, has developed from a simple empirical process of determining the conditions for epitaxy into a complex analytical and experimental study of the nucleation and growth process on the one hand and a technology of very great importance on the other. During this period the thin films group of the University of Chile has studied the epitaxy of metals on metal and insulating substrates. The development of the group, one of the first research groups in physics to be established in the country, has parallelled the increasing complexity of the field.The elaborate techniques and equipment now needed for research into thin films may be illustrated by considering the plant and facilities of this group as characteristic of a good system for the controlled deposition and study of thin films.

The nucleation and growth of quasicrystalline thin films during sequential vapor deposition of aluminum and manganese on various substrates have been studied at temperatures between 530 and 650 K. The films were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray analysis, replica techniques, and Auger depth profiling. The quasicrystalline phase is identified as icosahedral. It nucleates on the surfaces of the Al films. There is no indication of substantial bulk Mn diffusion. The growth process is governed by diffusion of Al to the quasicrystal surface where it reacts with the incident Mn.

This article gathers some of the most important theoretical and conceptual references, systematized from the review and consultation of specialized literature on university Spin Off, through a documentary type methodological qualitative process with a tendency to observe closely, afterwards, the capacity that has the University of Cauca, a public Colombian higher education institution, regarding the organization of knowledge to transfer the results generated by its research groups towards the environment, in alliance with entrepreneurs and other groups of interest, where the following analytical categories among others, are highlighted: The evaluation of the diverse typologies presented by well-known experts based on their heterogeneity. The analysis of different organizational models related to this type of entrepreneurships. The factors of success and the failure of some universities Spin Offs. The stages that might have to be exhausted for the successful implementation of this kind of organizations and the basic aspects to be considered in the relationship between University-Firm-State. As closure, it is suggested that for all legal purposes, a university Spin-Off in Colombia is "a company based on knowledge, especially the one protected by rights of Intellectual Property, created in the area of the Higher Education Institution (HEI), as a result of research and development activities conducted under their support, in their laboratories and facilities or by researchers who are linked to them, among others" (Law 1838, Act of 2017).

The study of very thin (<15 nm) YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films is necessary both for investigating the nucleation and growth of films of this material and for achieving a better understanding of multilayer structures incorporating such thin YBCO regions. We have used transmission electron microscopy to examine ultra-thin films grown on MgO substrates by single-target, off-axis magnetron sputtering; details of the deposition process have been reported elsewhere. Briefly, polished MgO substrates were attached to a block placed at 90° to the sputtering target and heated to 650 °C. The sputtering was performed in 10 mtorr oxygen and 40 mtorr argon with an rf power of 125 watts. After deposition, the chamber was vented to 500 torr oxygen and allowed to cool to room temperature. Because of YBCO’s susceptibility to environmental degradation and oxygen loss, the technique of Xi, et al. was followed and a protective overlayer of amorphous YBCO was deposited on the just-grown films.

Recrystallization of amorphous NiSi2 involves nucleation and growth processes which can be studied dynamically in the electron microscope. Previous studies have shown thatCoSi2 recrystallises by nucleating spherical caps which then grow with a constant radial velocity. Coalescence results in the formation of hyperbolic grain boundaries. Nucleation of the isostructural NiSi2 results in small, approximately round grains with very rough amorphous/crystal interfaces. In this paper we show that the morphology of the rccrystallizcd film is dramatically affected by variations in the stoichiometry of the amorphous film.Thin films of NiSi2 were prepared by c-bcam deposition of Ni and Si onto Si3N4, windows supported by Si substrates at room temperature. The base pressure prior to deposition was 6 × 107 torr. In order to investigate the effect of stoichiomctry on the recrystallization process, the Ni/Si ratio was varied in the range NiSi1.8-2.4. The composition of the amorphous films was determined by Rutherford Backscattering.

Cecil Cameron Ewing (1925-2006) was a lecturer and head of ophthalmology at the University of Saskatchewan. Throughout his Canadian career, he was an active researcher who published several articles on retinoschisis and was the editor of the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. For his contributions to Canadian ophthalmology, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society awarded Ewing a silver medal. Throughout his celebrated medical career, Ewing maintained his passion for music. His love for music led him to be an active member in choir, orchestra, opera and chamber music in which he sang and played the piano, violin and viola. He was also the director of the American Liszt Society and a member for over 40 years. The connection between music and ophthalmology exists as early as the 18th Century. John Taylor (1703-1772) was an English surgeon who specialized in eye diseases. On the one hand, Taylor was a scientist who contributed to ophthalmology by publishing books on ocular physiology and diseases, and by advancing theories of strabismus. On the other hand, Taylor was a charlatan who traveled throughout Europe and blinded many patients with his surgeries. Taylor’s connection to music was through his surgeries on two of the most famous Baroque composers: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and George Frederick Handel (1685-1759). Bach had a painful eye disorder and after two surgeries by Taylor, Bach was blind. Handel had poor or absent vision prior to Taylor’s surgery, and his vision did not improve after surgery. Solid-state NMR has proven to be a versatile technique for studying the chemical structure, 3D structure and dynamics of all sorts of chemical compounds. In nanotechnology and particularly in thin films, the study of chemical modification, molecular packing, end chain motion, distance determination and solvent-matrix interactions is essential for controlling the final product properties and applications. Despite its atomic-level research capabilities and recent technical advancements, solid-state NMR is still lacking behind other spectroscopic techniques in the field of thin films due to the underestimation of NMR capabilities, availability, great variety of nuclei and pulse sequences, lack of sensitivity for quadrupole nuclei and time-consuming experiments. This article will comprehensively and critically review the work done by solid-state NMR on different types of thin films and the most advanced NMR strategies, which are beyond conventional, and the hardware design used to overcome the technical issues in thin-film research.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> On the one hand, sleep disorders in cancer patients are reported in 30–50% of cancer patients. On the other hand, specific causes for these sleep disorders are little known. This study was done to evaluate factors which may affect sleep of cancer patients. To our knowledge, this is the first study which includes return to work as one factor of sleep disturbance. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> 107 patients with various types of cancer treated in 2 hospitals were interviewed with a battery of questionnaires after having given informed consent. The questionnaires intended to detect abnormalities of sleep and related pain, breathing disorders, restless legs syndrome, depression, rumination, medication, and psychosocial distress. The study was approved by the ethics committee of the University of Marburg. <b><i>Results:</i></b> The analysis of the 6 sleep-related questionnaires indicated a sleep disorder of any kind in 68% of all patients. Insomnia symptoms were present in 48 patients (44.9%). Pain, depression, anxiety, and worries about the workplace were significantly related to sleep disorders. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> Sleep disorders are common in cancer patients. The causes are manifold and should be considered by caregivers during diagnosis, therapy, and aftercare of cancer patients. Tumour patients should actively be asked about sleep disorders. If these are present, they should be addressed, and as they have a large impact on quality of life, treatment options should be offered in cooperation with sleep specialists.

An important element of a solar installation is the storage tank. When properly selected and operated, it can bring numerous benefits. The presented research relates to a project that is implemented at the Solar Energy Research Center of the University of Almeria in Spain. In order to improve the operation of the solar cooling and heating system of the Center, it was upgraded with two newly designed storage tanks filled with phase change materials (PCM). As a result of design works, commercial material S10 was selected for the accumulation of cold, and S46 for the accumulation of heat, in an amount of 85% and 15%, respectively. The article presents in detail the process of selecting the PCM material, designing the installation, experimental research, and exergy analysis. Individual tasks were carried out by research groups cooperating under the PCMSOL EUROPEAN PROJECT. Results of tests conducted on the constructed installation indicate that daily energy saving when using a solar chiller with PCM tanks amounts to 40% during the cooling season.
