This study investigated the effects of speech synthesis on the proofreading efficiency of postsecondary students with learning disabilities. Subjects proofread self-generated written language samples under three conditions: (a) using a speech synthesis system that simultaneously highlighted and “spoke” words on a computer monitor, (b) having the text read aloud to them by another person, and (c) receiving no assistance. Using the speech synthesis system enabled subjects to detect a significantly higher percentage of total errors than either of the other two proofreading conditions. In addition, subjects were able to locate a significantly higher percentage of capitalization, spelling, usage and typographical errors under the speech synthesis condition. However, having the text read aloud by another person significantly outperformed the other conditions in finding “grammar-mechanical” errors. Results are discussed with regard to underlying reasons for the overall superior performance of the speech synthesis system and the implications of using speech synthesis as a compensatory writing aid for postsecondary students with learning disabilities.

High pressure synthesized samples of nominal composition of Ca 2-x Hg x CuO y with x=0.10~0.20 under reductive synthesis condition showed stable and reproducible resistivity onset transition at 225~254 K accompanied by rapid drop of thermoelectric power without accompanying magnetic susceptibility transition. Fe 1-x S ( x =0) by mechanical alloying method showed resistivity anomaly and thermal hysteresis at 150~180 K. These resistive anomalies may be phase transition of unknown origin rather than an indication of superconductivity.

Yb3+, Tm3+ co-doped Gd6MoO12 phosphors were prepared by the hydrothermal method. After tuning the PH value and EDTA, phosphors present different morphologies including hexagonal prisms, spindles, and spheres. Under 980nm excitation, the upconversion luminescence properties of the as-prepared phosphors are studied based on changing the synthesis condition. It is found that usage of EDTA and pH changing both play crucial key in the formation of morphology. Pumping power on the UC luminescence properties and level diagram mechanism of Gd6MoO12:Yb3+/Tm3+phosphor have also been discussed.

Some conditional experiments for the preparation of Poly Silicate Aluminium Ferric Boron (PSAFB) composite flocculant and its coagulation and flocculation for the removal of CODCr were conducted and discussed.Preliminary results show the optimum synthesis condition as follows: Si/Al( mole ratio) =2/1, Si/Fe( mole ratio)=1/1,Si/B( mole ratio)=10/1. Under optimal operating conditions,PSAFB can remove 69.3% of CODCr from the printing and dyeing wastewater.
