The hypothesis here proposed is that, in primary fields of mass selection (F1) of sugarcane, herbicides exert a selective action when applied in the early post-emergence of seedlings (POST-i) and supplemented after their establishment phase (POST-l) even in sandy soils. To verify such hypothesis, the selectivity of herbicides was studied on seedlings of three sugarcane families, after their application both at early and late post-emergence in primary selection fields (F1). The field had a randomized blocks design, with five replications, and the subdivided plots scheme was used. Twelve herbicide treatments were allocated in the plots (27 m-2), whereas the sub-plots (9 m-2) contained three families of seedlings. Each sub-plot consisted of a transplanted row (0.5 x 1.50 m) with 12 individuals of the same family. Six treatments were employed, namely, T1: tebuthiuron (1200 g ha-1) post-i + ametryn (3000 g ha-1) post-l; T2: diuron (1404 g ha-1) + hexazinone (396 g ha-1) post-i + ametryn (3000 g ha-1) post-l; T3: sulfentrazone (800 g ha-1) post-i + ametryn (3000 g ha-1) post-l; T4: diuron (1404 g ha-1) + hexazinone (396 g ha-1) post-i + metribuzin (1920 g ha-1) post-l; T5: sulfentrazone (800 g ha-1) post-i + metribuzin (1920 g ha-1) post-l, and T6: weeded plot. The sugarcane families were: F400 (♀IAC086155 x ♂unknown), F43 (♀IACBIO264 × ♂IAC911099), and F14 (♀IACSP991305 × ♂GlagaH). We concluded that the herbicides tebuthiuron (1200 g ha-1), diuron (104 g ha-1) + hexazinone (396 g ha-1), or sulfentrazone (800 g ha-1), when applied in the early post-emergence and supplemented with ametryn (3000 g ha-1) or metribuzin (1920 g ha-1) in late post-emergence (60 days from planting) of the sugarcane families studied, were selective to the seedlings. That is, no toxicity symptoms with a potential to impede the final selection of seedlings occurred.

The purpose of this study was to compare the hamstring to quadriceps ratio (H:Q) obtained from three different hip flexion angles. Seventy-three young athletes performed maximum isokinetic concentric and eccentric knee extension and flexion efforts at 60 °·s−1 and 240 °·s−1 from hip flexion angles of 90°, 60°, and 120°. The conventional (concentric to concentric), functional (eccentric to concentric) and mixed (eccentric at 30 °·s−1 to concentric torque at 240 °·s−1) H: Q torque ratios and the electromyographic activity from the rectus femoris and biceps femoris were analyzed. The conventional H:Q ratios and the functional H:Q ratios at 60 °·s−1 did not significantly differ between the three testing positions (p > 0.05). In contrast, testing from the 90° hip flexion angle showed a greater functional torque ratio at 240 °·s−1 and a mixed H:Q torque ratio compared with the other two positions (p < 0.05). The hip flexion angle did not influence the recorded muscle activation signals (p > 0.05). For the range of hip flexion angles tested, routine isokinetic assessment of conventional H:Q ratio and functional H:Q ratio at slow speed is not angle-dependent. Should assessment of the functional H:Q ratio at fast angular velocity or the mixed ratio is required, then selection of hip flexion angle is important.

Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is a means to synthesize relevant and high quality studies related to a specific topic or research questions. In the Primary Selection stage of an SLR, the selection of studies is usually performed manually by reading title, abstract and keywords of each study. In the last years, the number of published scientific studies has grown increasing the effort to perform this sort of reviews. In this paper, we proposed strategies to detect non-papers and duplicated references in results exported by search engines, and strategies to rank the references in decreasing order of importance for an SLR, regarding the terms in the search string. These strategies are based on Information Retrieval techniques. We implemented the strategies and carried out an experimental evaluation of their applicability using two real datasets. As results, the strategy to detect non-papers presented 100% of precision and 50% of recall; the strategy to detect duplicates detected more duplicates than the manual inspection; and one of the strategies to rank relevant references presented 50% of precision and 80% of recall. Therefore, the results show that the proposed strategies can minimize the effort in the Primary Selection stage of an SLR.

The article deals with the formation of criteria for the primary selection of legal texts for the English-Ukrainian parallel corpus of legal texts. The author has developed a classification of legal texts on the basis of the style and text genres, taking into account the types of legal acts, and makes an attempt to combine legal and linguistic characteristics applicable to the classification of legal documents. The article proposes the structure of the metadata card for corpus texts (original and translation), which are tested on text samples. The need for metatext data and extra-linguistic information for working with corpus texts is substantiated in the article.

The relevance of the study is due to the need to improve the methods of primary selection of children for boxing, which will further improve the effectiveness of their training and competitive activities in this sport. The purpose is to identify the opinion of boxing coaches on the need to improve the primary selection in this sport, new tools, methods and indicators that ensure the quality of the contingent and the effectiveness of sports activities of young boxers. Collection of information was carried out with the help of a questionnaire and the study of special scientific literature, electronic sources on the basis of the Belgorod State National University, Boxing Federation of the Belgorod region, Armavir Pedagogical University. The survey involved 49 coaches from different regions of the Russian Federation aged from 23 to 67 years. The opinions of the coaches were divided: some of them consider the improvement of the content of the primary selection an urgent need, the others deny such a need, and several people could not clearly determine their opinion about the need to improve the primary selection in boxing. During the survey, we proposed to improve the selection methodology, taking into account important criteria and indicators in its content. The leading indicators for the primary selection for boxing were divided into three main groups: physical qualities, psychological indicators, personal qualities of the subjects. At the same time, the analysis of literature and a survey of specialists showed that a number of factors in the recommendations and wishes of trainers are absent (for example, the properties of higher nervous activity, the ability to tolerate physical pain and fear of this pain). The obtained data can be used in the theory and methodology of boxing, as well as in the practical conduct of the primary selection of future boxers. The results of the study may be of some value not only for boxing coaches, but also for specialists in other types of martial arts (for example, for kickboxing, karate, taekwondo, etc.). In the future, there is a need to study the general approaches and provisions in the development of methods of primary selection of young athletes for training in martial arts and to justify the criteria and methods of its implementation, taking into account the specifics of each martial art.

SynopsisThe Paper is a revised edition of that contributed to the Faculty in 1919. In the interval there have been developments in medico-actuarial science, and it seemed desirable that they should be recorded. The use and abuse of statistics are dealt with, and reference is made to Primary Selection by Branch Officials and to Medical Selection. The Section of Family History Impairments opens with a reference to Heredity, Mendelism and Eugenics. The influence of Tuberculosis is discussed, and suggestions made for the assessing of the lives concerned. In view of the circumstance that there exists among many a confident belief in the hereditary nature of Cancer, there are given reasons for holding the opinion that when the Cancer problem is solved it is probable that the influence, if any, of heredity will be found to be distinctly small, and possibly negligible. A number of other diseases are dealt with briefly. The Section of Personal History Impairments opens with Heart Abnormalities. Blood Pressure is gone into at some length. It is pointed out that hitherto there has been no recognised Standard Table of Blood Pressure in use among British Offices, and there is now put forward one compiled from the record of 1444 first-class lives. It is regarded as a Tentative Table, and is given in the hope that it will stimulate the production of another founded on a broader basis. The method of ascertaining the Blood Pressure is explained in an Appendix. Various other impairments are referred to; and probably of the articles revised the most important are those relating to Glycosuria and Gastroduodenal Ulcers.Weight in relation to Height and Age is gone into, and reasons given for retaining the Table of 1919 in preference to the later Table of Seven Offices.Female Lives, Non-medical Examination Business, Children's Assurances, etc., are the subjects of other paragraphs. The Paper concludes with a reference to the public benefit of Life Assurance Research.
