We answer the question of splitting of the normalizer of a maximal torus in orthogonal groups of type [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] over finite fields and algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic.

Summary In this article we further extend the algebraic theory of polynomial rings in Mizar [1, 2, 3]. We deal with roots and multiple roots of polynomials and show that both the real numbers and finite domains are not algebraically closed [5, 7]. We also prove the identity theorem for polynomials and that the number of multiple roots is bounded by the polynomial’s degree [4, 6].

The study of pseudo-algebraically closed fields (henceforth called PAC) started with the work of J. Ax on finite and pseudo-finite fields [1]. He showed that the infinite models of the theory of finite fields are exactly the perfect PAC fields with absolute Galois group isomorphic to , and gave elementary invariants for their first order theory, thereby proving the decidability of the theory of finite fields. Ax's results were then extended to a larger class of PAC fields by M. Jarden and U. Kiehne [21], and Jarden [19]. The final word on theories of PAC fields was given by G. Cherlin, L. van den Dries and A. Macintyre [10], see also results by Ju. Ershov [13], [14]. Let K be a PAC field. Then the elementary theory of K is entirely determined by the following data:• The isomorphism type of the field of absolute numbers of K (the subfield of K of elements algebraic over the prime field).• The degree of imperfection of K.• The first-order theory, in a suitable ω-sorted language, of the inverse system of Galois groups al(L/K) where L runs over all finite Galois extensions of K.They also showed that the theory of PAC fields is undecidable, by showing that any graph can be encoded in the absolute Galois group of some PAC field. It turns out that the absolute Galois group controls much of the behaviour of the PAC fields. I will give below some examples illustrating this phenomenon.

AbstractDenef and Loeser denned a map from the Grothendieck ring of sets definable in pseudo-finite fields to the Grothendieck ring of Chow motives, thus enabling to apply any cohomological invariant to these sets. We generalize this to perfect, pseudo algebraically closed fields with pro-cyclic Galois group. In addition, we define some maps between different Grothendieck rings of definable sets which provide additional information, not contained in the associated motive. In particular we infer that the map of Denef-Loeser is not injective.

This is a continuation of our previous work on Jordan decomposition of bilinear forms over algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0. In this note, we study Jordan decomposition of bilinear forms over any field K0 of characteristic 0. Let V0 be an n-dimensional vector space over K0. Denote by [Formula: see text] the space of bilinear forms f : V0 × V0 → K0. We say that f = g + h, where f, g, [Formula: see text], is a rational Jordan decomposition of f if, after extending the field K0 to an algebraic closure K, we obtain a Jordan decomposition over K. By using the Galois group of K/K0, we prove the existence of rational Jordan decompositions and describe a method for constructing all such decompositions. Several illustrative examples of rational Jordan decompositions of bilinear forms are included. We also show how to classify the unimodular congruence classes of bilinear forms over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from 2 and over the real field.

Numerical models of the heat index time series and spatio-temporal fields can be used for a variety of purposes, from the study of the dynamics of heat waves to projections of the influence of future climate on humans. To conduct these studies one must have efficient numerical models that successfully reproduce key features of the real weather processes. In this study, 2 numerical stochastic models of the spatio-temporal non-Gaussian field of the average daily heat index (ADHI) are considered. The field is simulated on an irregular grid determined by the location of weather stations. The first model is based on the method of the inverse distribution function. The second model is constructed using the normalization method. Real data collected at weather stations located in southern Russia are used to both determine the input parameters and to verify the proposed models. It is shown that the first model reproduces the properties of the real field of the ADHI more precisely compared to the second one, but the numerical implementation of the first model is significantly more time consuming. In the future, it is intended to transform the models presented to a numerical model of the conditional spatio-temporal field of the ADHI defined on a dense spatio-temporal grid and to use the model constructed for the stochastic forecasting of the heat index.

AbstractWe use a new construction of an o-minimal structure, due to Lipshitz and Robinson, to answer a question of van den Dries regarding the relationship between arbitrary o-minimal expansions of real closed fields and structures over the real numbers. We write a first order sentence which is true in the Lipshitz-Robinson structure but fails in any possible interpretation over the field of real numbers.
