Thermal mechanical loadings in machining process would promote material microstructure changes. The material microstructure evolution, such as grain size evolution and phase transformation could significantly influence the material flow stress behavior, which will directly affect the machining forces. An analytical model is proposed to predict cutting forces during the turning of AISI 4130 steel. The material dynamic recrystallization is considered through Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) model. The explicit calculation of average grain size is provided in an analytical model. The grain size effect on the material flow stress is considered by introducing the Hall-Petch relation into a modified Johnson-Cook model. The cutting forces prediction are based on Oxley’s contact mechanics with consideration of mechanical and thermal loads. The model is validated by comparing the predicted machining forces with experimental measurements.

Stiffener rings and stringers are used commonly in offshore and aerospace structures. Welding the stiffener to the structure causes the appearance of residual stress and distortion that leads to short-term and long-term negative effects. Residual stress and distortion of welding have destructive effects such as deformation, brittle fracture, and fatigue of the welded structures. This paper aims to investigate the effects of preheating, time interval and welding parameters such as welding current and speed on residual stress and distortion of joining an ST52-3N (DIN 1.0570) T-shape stiffener ring to an AISI 4130 (DIN 1.7218) thin-walled tubular shell by eleven pairs of welding line in both sides of the ring by means of finite element method (FEM). Results in tangent (longitudinal), axial and radial directions have been compared and the best welding methods proposed. After the comparison of the results, simultaneous welding both sides of the ring with preheating presented as the best method with less distortion and residual stresses among the studied conditions. The correctness of the FEM confirmed by the validation of the results.

One of the welding methods that is widely used today because it is easier to operate, more practical in its use, can be used for all welding positions and more efficient is called Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). In this welding, the base metal and filler metal will experience thermal cycles which lead to local heating and cooling processes resulting in residual stress and distortion in the material. This residual stress must be removed because it causes a decrease in the mechanical properties of the material. The most widely used method is the thermal method that is by Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT). The success of The post-weld heat treatment in removing residual stresses in PWHT is influenced by the holding time. This study aims to examine the effect of holding time on heat treatment, on the weld toughness of steel. In this study, the type of welding used was SMAW welding, the material used was steel AISI 4130, the electrodes used were LB-7018-1 standard application and AWS classification A5.1 E7018-1. The test holding temperature is 650oC. The holding time of testing uses three variables, namely: 2.5 hours, 4.5 hours, 6.5 hours. The Impact testing is done by the Charpy method. From this study, the influence of holding time variation on PWHT holding temperature on the weld strength of AISI 4130 steel was obtained.
