The research of the determination of the fractal characteristics of the surface of a material proposes the use of a stationary profilograph and a computer program for calculating the Hurst exponent. The low accuracy of fractal analysis using the well-known computer program Fractan is revealed. A computer program developed in VBA for the fractal analysis of the time series is described. The high accuracy of the algorithms for calculating the Hurst exponent incorporated in this program is shown.

This paper confirms the applicability of a newly developed efficient algorithm, the direct electrifying method, for identifying backbone for 3D site and bond percolating networks. This algorithm is based on the current-carrying definition of backbone and carried out on the predetermined spanning cluster, which is assumed to be a resistor network. The scaling exponents so obtained for backbone mass, red bonds, and conductivity are in very good agreement with some existing results. The perfectly balanced bonds in 3D backbone structures are predicted first time to be 0.00179 ± 0.00009 and 0.00604 ± 0.00008 of the backbone mass for bond and site percolations, respectively.

The fractal characteristics of pore structures were investigated using duck eggshells as an object of study. The images of the sharp end, the equator and the blunt end of the eggshells were acquired by using scanning electronic microscope. The image processing operations were conducted for the preprocessing and the image converted into binary image. Then we developed programs based on the principle of changing megascopic degree and applied them to plot thelgN(δ)~lg(δ).The relationship betweenlgN(δ)andlg(δ)maintained linearity over a range [2,64] pixels. Therefore, the fractal dimensions of pore distributions were obtained from the negative slope by regression analysis. The experimental results showed that the fractal feature of the pore in eggshells was remarkable. The analysis confirmed that the blunt end of the eggshell in the pore distributions was more obvious than the sharp end and the equator.

The diffusion-controlled transport of ions and molecules through polymer membranes utilized in chemical and biosensors is often the key factor determining the response characteristics of these sensors. A simple voltammetric method utilizing a planar electrochemical cell allows the rapid determination of diffusion coefficients in resistive polymer membranes.

A loading crushing test of recycled mixed coarse aggregates in the same particle diameter range is carried out, and the crushed coarse aggregates are screened, manually sorted, and weighed to study the crushing characteristics of recycled mixed coarse aggregates. The results show that the effect of “reinforcing the strong and discarding the weak” exists between two types of recycled mixed coarse aggregates with different strength in the course of crushing. After crushing, the cumulative mass content under each sieve at all levels and the sieve diameter ratio conform to the geometric fractal characteristics, and the fractal dimension is influenced by the material strength, the initial mixing ratio, and the initial void ratio. On this basis, the fractal dimension of recycled mixed coarse aggregates is determined by the crushing test, and the gradation of recycled mixed coarse aggregates for pavement base or subbase is then determined by fractal dimension. Finally, the mixing amount of recycled clay bricks in recycled mixed coarse aggregates for pavement base or subbase is discussed.
