As direct connection of a floor and the cylindrical shell would reduce sound stealth performance of underwater vehicles, an indirect connection mode is proposed. To compare the effect of connection mode on vibration transmission characteristics, two models, directly-connected model and indirectly-connected model, are designed and manufactured to take experiments. Experimental result shows that indirect connection can reduce the vibration energy transmitted from the floor to the shell when these two models have the same structural parameters. Thus indirect connection is more useful to improve the sound stealth performance of underwater vehicles.

Self-pierce riveting (SPR) technology offers an alternative to resistance spot welding (RSW) for joining sheet materials. It has been found that the SPR technology produced a much stronger joint than the RSW in fatigue test. For efficient design of SPR structures, the knowledge of dynamic characteristics of the SPR beams is essential. In this paper, the free transverse vibration characteristics of single lap-jointed cantilevered SPR beams are investigated in detail. The focus of the analysis is to reveal the influence on the natural frequency and natural frequency ratio of these beams caused by variations in the material properties of sheet materials to be jointed. It is shown that the transverse natural frequencies of single lap jointed cantilevered SPR beams increase significantly as the Young’s modulus of the sheet materials increases, but change slightly corresponding to the change in Poisson’s ratio. It is also found that the material density of the sheets have significant effects on the free transverse vibration characteristics of the beams.

Reinforced cylindrical shells are used in numerous industries; common examples include undersea vehicles, aircraft, and industrial piping. Current models typically incorporate approximation theories to determine shell behavior, which are limited by both thickness and frequency. In addition, many applications feature coatings on the shell interior or exterior that normally have thicknesses which must also be considered. To increase the fidelity of such systems, this work develops an analytic model of an elastic cylindrical shell featuring periodically spaced ring stiffeners with a coating applied to the outer surface. There is an external fluid environment. Beginning with the equations of elasticity for a solid, spatial-domain displacement field solutions are developed incorporating unknown wave propagation coefficients. These fields are used to determine stresses at the boundaries of the shell and coating, which are then coupled with stresses from the stiffeners and fluid. The stress boundary conditions contain double-index infinite summations, which are decoupled, truncated, and recombined into a global matrix equation. The solution to this global equation results in the displacement responses of the system as well as the exterior scattered pressure field. An incident acoustic wave excitation is considered. Thin-shell reference models are used for validation, and the predicted system response to an example simulation is examined. It is shown that the reinforcing ribs and coating add significant complexity to the overall cylindrical shell model; however, the proposed approach enables the study of structural and acoustic responses of the coupled system.

Free-vibration characteristics of a thin-walled, open cross-section beam, with unconstrained damping layers at the flanges, are investigated. Both uncoupled transverse vibration and the coupled bending-torsion oscillations, of a beam of a top-hat section, are considered. Numerical results are presented for natural frequencies and modal loss factors of simply supported and clamped-clamped beams.

Levitation stability is the very basis for the dynamic operation of Electromagnetic Suspension (EMS) medium-low speed maglev trains (MSMT). However, self-excited vibration tends to occur when the vehicle is standing still above the lightweight lines, which remains a major constraint to the promotion of medium-low speed maglev technology. In order to study the vertical vibration characteristics of the coupled system of MSMT when it is standing still above lightweight lines, levitation tests were carried out on two types of steel beams: steel beam and active girder of the turnout, with a newly developed maglev vehicle using levitation frames with mid-set air spring. Firstly, modal tests were carried out on the steel beam to determine its natural vibration characteristics; secondly, the acceleration signals and the dynamic displacement signals of the air spring obtained at each measurement point were analyzed in detail in both the time and frequency domains, and the vertical ride comfort was assessed by means of the calculated Sperling index. Subsequently, theoretical explanations were given for the occurrence of self-excited vibration of coupled system from the perspective of the vehicle-to-guideway vibration energy input. Results show that the eigen frequencies of the vehicle on the steel beam and the turnout are 9.65 Hz and 2.15 Hz, respectively, the former being close to the natural frequency of the steel beam while the latter being close to the natural frequency of the air spring suspension system, thus causing the self-excited vibration of the coupled system. It is recommended to either avoid the main eigen frequencies of the coupled system or to increase the damping of the corresponding vibration modes to guarantee a reliable coupled system for its long-term performance. These results may provide valuable references for the optimal design of medium-low speed maglev systems.

The vibration model of moving membrane with variable density distribution is established, and the density distribution of the moving membrane varies along the lateral direction. The transverse vibration differential equations of moving membrane are established based on D’Alembert’s principle and discretized by using the differential quadrature method (DQM). The relationships of the first three dimensionless complex frequencies between dimensionless speed, density coefficient, and tension ratio of the membrane are analyzed by numerical calculation. The effects of the density coefficient and the tension ratio on transverse vibration characteristics of the membrane are investigated. The relationship between density coefficient and critical speed is obtained. The numerical results show that the density coefficient and the tension ratio have important influence on the stability of moving membrane. So the study provides a theoretical basis for improving the working stability of the membrane in the high-speed printing process.

Wave based method which can be recognized as a semi-analytical and semi-numerical method is presented to analyze the free vibration characteristics of ring stiffened cylindrical shell with intermediate large frame ribs for arbitrary boundary conditions. According to the structure type and the positions of discontinuities, the model is divided into different substructures whose vibration field is expanded by wave functions which are exactly analytical solutions to the governing equations of the motions of corresponding structure type. Boundary conditions and continuity equations between different substructures are used to form the final matrix to be solved. Natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes are calculated by wave based method and the results show good agreement with finite element method for clamped-clamped, shear diaphragm – shear diaphragm and free-free boundary conditions. Free vibration characteristics of ring stiffened cylindrical shells with intermediate large frame ribs are compared with those with bulkheads and those with all ordinary ribs. Effects of the size, the number and the distribution of intermediate large frame rib are investigated. The frame rib which is large enough is playing a role as bulkhead, which can be considered imposing simply supported and clamped constraints at one end of the cabin and dividing the cylindrical shell into several cabins vibrating separately at their own natural frequencies.
