This study is a cross-sectional survey of the satisfaction of postoperative patients its relationship to the knowledge and attitudes of Chinese nurses on pain management. Data were sourced out from two groups of respondents participated in the study, 75 post-operative patients and 97 in-service nurses from the health institutions China. The study was conducted for five-months. Ethics protocols were observed before and after the conduct of the study. Findings showed that post-operative pain management program among the participating medical institutions in China were assessed to have moderate level of satiation by the patients. All the components namely pain relief experience, care provided by the nurses, education provided as to pain management, and therapeutic dialogue provided by the nurses were all assessed by postoperative Chinese patients at a fair level. Meanwhile, gender and education of post-operative patients can be considered as factors in the planning and implementation of pain management program. Consequently, similar to studies conducted worldwide, Chinese nurses do not establish yet an optimal level of knowledge and attitude towards pain management. Meanwhile age, experience, education are factors on the knowledge and attitude on pain management among nurses. Finally, positive moderate relationship is established between patient satisfaction and knowledge and attitudes of nursing staff towards pain management. The findings of these study call for action and reform in the implementation of pain management program focusing on the major role and development of 21st century nurses. Practical implications of the study are discussed.

Abstract IntroductionQatar is a small but high-income Middle Eastern country with a large influx of migrants each year. However, the impact of changing population structure and urbanization on prevalence of generalized anxiety symptoms remains unexplored to date. Materials & MethodsA total of 2,640 participants interviewed by phone using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2). Bivariate and multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the associations of ethnicity (Arab versus Non-Arab) with severity and symptom profile of GAD and overlap with depressive symptoms. ResultsThe point prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe symptoms were 13.4% (95% CI: 11.9 – 15.0), 2.7% (95% CI: 2.0 – 3.5), and 0.9% (95% CI: 0.6– 1.4), respectively. Arab ethnicity was associated with mild GAD (OR=1.78, p=0.009) and moderate-to-severe GAD (OR=2.36, p=0.044). Relative to non-migrants, migrant types were not significantly associated with mild or with moderate-to- severe GAD. Interactions between depressive symptoms and ethnicity were evident and statistically significant for the association with mild GAD versus no GAD (OR=0.34, p=0.003). ConclusionsEthnicity moderated the association of depression symptoms and GAD severity, with potential implications for early screening and community intervention.

PURPOSE To share the development, implementation, and evaluation of a program called "An Institutional Commitment to Pain Management," which is based on the philosophy of organizational influence on pain management. METHODS A tested pain education model was disseminated to 32 physician/nurse teams in settings throughout California, after which the 64 professionals returned to their institutions to serve as role models and catalysts to change the practice of pain management. Each team member completed a 39-item survey about knowledge and attitudes related to pain, which was developed by B.R.F. and colleagues, and also identified three goals for the implementation of course information. Precourse data also included administration of the knowledge and attitudes survey to participating physicians' and nurses' colleagues (10 physicians and 20 nurses per institution). Each team completed five chart audits using the pain audit tool (PAT), which was developed by B.R.F. and colleagues at the City of Hope National Medical Center. The PAT identifies how pain is managed currently at the institutional level. Final course evaluation 8 months after course completion included a summary of activities implemented by the teams as well as the factors that served as barriers and benefits to improve the quality of pain management. RESULTS Two hundred seventy-two physicians and 629 nurses completed the survey about knowledge and attitudes related to pain, and 154 PATs were submitted. These results, as well as evaluation at the completion of the course, are discussed. CONCLUSION The Institutional Commitment to Pain Management program is an evolving model that was developed to overcome barriers to pain relief by obtaining the commitment from institutions to improve the management of pain for their patients.

Academic achievement of most of the Saudi EFL learners is generally poor. A lot of research has been done to probe problems of EFL learners but very little attention has been paid to overcome these problems via better classroom environment and teaching strategies. This quasi-experimental study aimed at investigating the impact of cooperative learning on academic achievement of EFL tertiary learners at a mainstream public sector university in a Middle Eastern country. The sample of the study included 50 EFL non-English major male students enrolled at the preparatory year program in the first semester of 1434-35 corresponding to 2014 A.D. Pretest posttest experimental group research design was used for the study. Scores of the pretest and posttest for the two course-based assessments were analyzed using MS Excel 2013 and SPSS Version 20. The results of the study revealed that the experimental group showed better performance in the posttest compared to that of control group, showing that cooperative learning has positive impact on academic achievement of Saudi EFL tertiary level learners. The low achievers and the medium achievers in the EG showed statistically significant improvement after the CL treatment whereas high achievers performed equally well in both CL and traditional setting. Low achievement of Saudi EFL tertiary level learners should be given a serious consideration and proper remedial measures should be implemented. CL can be instrumental in this regard.

Background and objectives: Limited evidence exists exploring perceptions of which aspects of a pain management program are perceived as valuable and impactful. The aim of this study was to explore patient beliefs about which aspects of a pain management program were valued and/or had perceived impact. Materials and Methods: One-on-one structured interviews were conducted with 11 adults three months after their completion of the Spark Pain Program at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia. Concepts in the transcripts were inductively identified and explored, utilizing thematic analysis to better understand their relevance to the study aim. Results: Four themes emerged: (1) “The program overall was positive, but…”; (2) “I valued my improved knowledge and understanding of pain, but…”; (3) “I valued the stretching/relaxation/pacing/activity monitoring”; and (4) “I valued being part of a supportive and understanding group”. Participants reported that they liked being treated as an individual within the group. A lack of perceived personal relevance of key messages was identified in some participants; it appears that patients in pain programs must determine that changes in knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes are personally relevant in order for the changes to have a significant impact on them. Conclusions: This study provides new insights into aspects of a pain management program that were perceived as valuable and impactful, areas that “missed the mark”, and hypotheses to guide the implementation of service delivery and program redesign.
