The geographic pattern of isozyme variation among rice varieties (Oryza sativa L.) in Asia is described based on an electrophoretic survey of 1688 accessions for 15 loci. The distribution patterns are strongly determined by the existence of several varietal groups that are characterized by contrasting multilocus types with dissimilar environmental and macrogeographic distributions. The two main groups correspond to the indica and japonica subspecies. Other types are frequently found in the Indian subcontinent, especially along the Himalayan foothills. These types are predominant in the Indus River basin. They are differentiated into four groups in the eastern part of the Himalayan foothills. There is variation within the groups. Non-random allele distributions are observed, such as regional clines and narrow localization of alleles. Diversity among indica rice is evenly distributed in whole tropical Asia. Variation among japonica rice shows the hilly part of continental Southeast Asia to be the region of highest genetic diversity and its probable area of origin. All this information provides a guide for further analysis aimed at elucidating the history of cultivated rice in Asia and, subsequently, in other continents.Key words: Asian rice, genetic diversity, isozymes, geographic distributions.

Investigation of genetic diversity and the relationships among varieties and breeding lines is of great importance to facilitate parental selection in the development of inbred and hybrid rice varieties and in the construction of heterotic groups. The technology of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is being advanced for the assessment of population diversity and genetic structures. We characterized 215 widely cultivated indica rice varieties developed in southern China and at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) using IRRI-developed SNP oligonucleotide pooled assay (OPA) to provide grouping information of rice mega-varieties for further heterotic pool study. The results revealed that the Chinese varieties were more divergent than the IRRI varieties. Two major subpopulations were clustered for the varieties using a model-based grouping method. The IRRI varieties were closely grouped and separated clearly from the majority of the Chinese varieties. The Chinese varieties were subclustered into three subgroups, but there was no clear evidence to separate the Chinese varieties into subgroups geographically, indicating a great degree of genetic integration of alleles and shared ancestries among those high-yielding modern varieties.

The assessment of the genetic diversity within germplasm collections can be accomplished using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and association mapping techniques. The present study was conducted to evaluate the genetic diversity of a colored rice germplasm collection containing 376 black-purple rice samples and 172 red pericarp samples, conserved by Dong-A University. There were 600 pairs of SSR primers screened against 11 rice varieties. Sixteen informative primer pairs were selected, having high polymorphism information content (PIC) values, which were then used to assess the genetic diversity within the collection. A total of 409 polymorphic amplified fragments were obtained using the 16 SSR markers. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 11 to 47, with an average of 25.6. The average PIC value was 0.913, ranging from 0.855 to 0.964. Four hundred and nine SSR loci were used to calculate Jaccard’s distance coefficients, using the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean cluster analysis. These accessions were separated into several distinctive groups corresponding to their morphology. The results provided valuable information for the colored rice breeding program and showed the importance of protecting germplasm resources and the molecular markers that can be derived from them.
