We aimed at investigating the insecticidal activity of Pyrus communis L. against the malarial vector, Anopheles pharoensis Theobald, 1901 and its phytochemical constituents. Leaves were collected and the crude extracts were prepared using hexane (PCH) and methanol (PCM). Tested PCH and PCM possess larvicidal activity against A. pharoensis with LC50 and LC90 values of 179.9, 41.2 and 314.1, 68.9 ppm, respectively. A significant reduction in the number of eggs laid by females A. pharoensis that developed from larvae treated with PCH and PCM was noticed. Also, PCH treatment showed highest repellent activity compared with PCM. GC/MS analysis of the PCH revealed the presence of 55 identified compounds subdivided into 2 major classes viz. phenyl alkanes (38.65 %) and oxygenated sesquiterpenoids (36.41 %). LC/MS of PCM had led to the identification of 37 compounds, mainly flavonoids, chalcones, phenolic acids and tannins. The results demonstrate the insecticidal potential of leaves methanol and hexane extracts from P. communis as green insecticidal agents for the control of malarial vector, A. pharoensis.

<p>Mosquitoes are the single most important group of insects in terms of public health significance and causing diseases. They are the vectors for the transmission of many viral pathogens and pose serious threat to human health. Chemical insecticides are widely used but they are non-selective and harmful to beneficial organisms. In the present study <em>G. Sepium</em> leaves extracts were used to analyse its effect against <em>Aedes aegypti</em>, to compare the mortality rate while using different solvent extracts of the leaf, to identify the solvent extract which give high rate of larval mortality and to characterise the compounds present in the corresponding leaf extract using phytochemical analysis. The ethanolic extract of <em>G. sepium</em> leaves constitute flavanoids, steroids, glycoside, carbohydrate and saponins compound. Thus it was found to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of larvae than other solvent extracts. In the statistical analysis highest significant difference was observed between 1.5g/l and 2.0g/l concentration of ethanolic extract and other extracts. However no significant difference was observed in other concentrations. The larvicidal activity of the plant extract may be attributed to the presence of active compounds like terpinoids, saponins and steroids.<strong></strong></p>

The aim of this study was to perform from the morpho-anatomical study, physicochemical characterization, chemical composition, seasonal variability and larvicidal activity of the volatile oils of Campomanesia pubescens (DC.) O. Berg leaves. The botanical material was collected in Hidrolândia, Goiás. Morpho-anatomical characterization and phytochemical screening were performed by conventional methods. Leaf powders were submitted to hydrodistillation in the Clevenger apparatus and the identification of the chemical components of the volatile oils obtained was done by GC-MS. The larvicidal activity was carried out with third-stage larvae of the Aedes aegypti. The leaf blade, the main vein, and the young stem have a uni-stratified epidermis covered by a cuticle. The mesophyll and cortical parenchyma of the main vein and young stem have secretory cavities and idioblasts with crystals. The main rib contains a bicolateral bundle in an open arch. The young stem has a discontinuous band of sclerenchyma external to the phloem cells. Most volatile oil compounds are spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, α-macrocarpene, and z-caryophylleneIn phytochemical analysis, tannins, digitalis, flavonoids, and total phenols were detected. The content of volatile compounds was 7.36%, that of total ash was 1.77%, and that of mucilage was 3.52 ml. The volatile oil at the concentration used was inactive against Ae aegypti larvae. The present study contributes to the taxonomic knowledge of the species and provides parameters for quality control of the plant raw material. This work represents the first description of the chemical compounds and seasonal variability of volatile oils from C. pubescens leaves collected in Goiás state.

The Gum Arabic of Acacia senegal (GA) has been reported to treat several diseases, such as kidney failure and cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disease. However, scarce investigation has been made into the phytoconstituents of GA. Obtained GA was macerated in water, then GA aqueous extract was subjected to phytochemical analysis using standard protocols and bioactivity screening by different procedures. Antimicrobial screening was performed using the cup-plate diffusion method against four bacterial strains and one fungi strain. The larvicidal activity was evaluated against the third instar of Culex quinquefasciatus. The phytochemical analysis showed that GA extract contains high amounts of saponins and alkaloids, moderate amounts of cardiac glycosides, and trace amounts of tannins. GA extract exhibited antimicrobial activity against the test organisms, with different zones of inhibition ranging 0 - 18 mm. The larvicidal activity showed significant perfection with increasing extract dose and exposure period with mortality up to 86.7 %. Results reveal that the crude extract of GA contains important biomolecules which has been proved to have substantial larvicidal and antimicrobial activities.
