Effect of dietary lycopene supplementation on growth performance, meat quality, fatty acid profile and meat lipid oxidation in lambs in summer conditions

Context Cold-pressed rapeseed cake is a by-product of biodiesel manufacturing that can be obtained on-farm after simple mechanical extraction of the oil. It has a high crude fat content and contains significant amounts of linoleic acid, which make it a promising lipid supplement to modulate meat fatty acid profile. However, previous studies have indicated that using unsaturated fats in beef cattle diets could promote lipid oxidation and reduce meat redness. Aims The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementation of intensively fattened beef steers with cold-pressed rapeseed cake on the fatty acid composition of beef fat and changes in measures of meat colour and lipid oxidation during 6 days of aerobic storage. Methods Sixteen Limousin steers were divided into two homogeneous groups and were fed ad libitum with barley straw and a concentrate mixture supplemented with either PROGRAS (PROGRAS at 2.7% of the diet, high in palmitic acid C16:0 from palm oil; CTR, experimental control; n = 8) or cold-pressed rapeseed cake (CPRC at 14.8% of the diet; CPRC treatment; n = 8) for a period of 9 months. The growth performance and carcass traits were assessed. The intramuscular fatty acids were analysed and the colour stability and lipid oxidation were measured in meat stored aerobically at 4°C for 0, 3 or 6 days. Key results Slaughter bodyweight and average daily gain were not affected by the inclusion of CPRC in the diet. Nor were there any changes in carcass weight, conformation or fatness. The longissimus thoracis from CPRC-fed animals depicted a higher UFA–SFA ratio and a lower atherogenic index than did that from animals fed CTR. Feeding CPRC increased the oleic acid , the vaccenic acid and the rumenic acid proportions in the muscle fat without affecting the ratio of C18:1 trans-10 to C18:1 trans-11. The extents of lipid oxidation and colour deterioration during aging were not affected by the dietary treatments. Conclusions The use of cold-pressed rapeseed cake as a lipid supplement in beef-steer diet improved the fatty acid profile of muscle fat without compromising meat oxidative stability, animal growth performance and carcass characteristics. Implications The supplementation of beef-steer diet with cold-pressed rapeseed cake could be an advantageous economical strategy allowing exploitation of an important by-product of small-scale biodiesel manufacturing to provide consumers with healthier meat.

AbstractThe present study aimed to evaluate growth performance and meat quality of broiler chicken with respect to feeding of 100 g flaxseed meal (FM)/kg and increasing lysine levels in the broiler diet. The results revealed no effect of lysine and FM feeding on growth performance except for a negative effect of FM on feed efficiency of birds, which was countered by feeding 1.25 BIS lysine. Feeding FM improved the fatty acid profile of broiler chicken meat significantly, whereas no effect was observed for increasing lysine levels beyond BIS recommendation. FM significantly reduced meat cholesterol, fat, water-holding capacity (WHC), extract release volume (ERV) and antioxidant potential, whereas it increased the pH of fresh meat, drip loss and lipid peroxidation of broiler chicken meat. As compared with other lysine levels, generally 1.25 BIS lysine significantly increased the pH of refrigerated stored meat, WHC, ERV and antioxidant potential, whereas it significantly reduced cholesterol, fat, drip loss and lipid peroxidation of broiler chicken meat. Thus, the inclusion of 100 g FM/kg diet along with 1.25 BIS lysine in broiler ration was optimum for desirable broiler performance, fatty acid profile, oxidative stability and other functional properties of broiler chicken meat.

Abstract. The aim of study was to assess the growth performance, meat quality, and fatty acid composition of meat-type guinea fowl fed balanced commercial diets under two different feeding programs, similar to those for slaughter turkeys and broiler chickens, respectively. A total of 80 4-week-old meat-type guinea fowl divided into two groups (four replicates per group; 10 birds in each replicate) were raised for 14 weeks. One group received commercially available diets in a three-phased program (TM group), whereas the other group was fed commercial diets in a two-phased program (CM group). Growth-performance-related traits were recorded. At the end of rearing (14 weeks of age), eight birds from each group were slaughtered. Carcass yield and technological traits of meat (pH, color, water-holding capacity, natural and thermal loss, tenderness, fatty acid profile) were analyzed. Groups did not differ in terms of body weight as well as carcass yield and characteristics. There was no difference in meat quality and the fatty acid profile of breast and thigh meat of guinea fowl from TM and CM groups. The findings of this study suggest that both commercial diets (for broiler chickens and turkeys) can be used in meat-type guinea fowl rearing. Due to the lower price of diets fed to the CM group and the lack of significant variation in meat quality traits, its use seems to be more justified from an economic point of view.

AbstractThe effects of caponization on growth performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality and fatty acid profile of breast and drumstick of Mos and Sasso genotypes, reared in free-range production system were examined. A total of 47 birds of Mos breed (19 Castrated and 25 Entire) and 37 of Sasso X-44 (18 Castrated and 19 Entire) slaughtered at 32 weeks were used in this trial. The growth of broilers and the differences between genotypes and caponization effects were modelled by Weibull-growth equation. Capon’s growth was higher than that obtained by roosters and Sasso weight was greater than Mos results (P<0.05). For both genotypes the chemical composition of breast and drumstick cuts showed significantly higher values of intramuscular fat (P<0.0001) and lesser values of moisture (P<0.0001) in capons in comparison with intact ones. In Mos breed, capons exhibited significantly (P<0.0001) higher values of breast and drumstick luminosity and yellowness, as well as lower values of redness. Regarding Warner-Braztler test (WB), there were no significant differences (P>0.05) by caponization effect, but hardness measured using textural profile analysis was lesser in meat from capons. Finally castration of animals led to important modifications in the intramuscular fat because meat from capons showed significantly lower values for total saturated fatty acids (SFA) and higher polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA ). Nutritional indices were also more favorable in capon’s meat, so overall fatty acid profile of capons was desirable from the viewpoint of human nutrition.

The shortage of some ingredients and, consequently, the continuous increase in the price of feed encourage the search for other alternatives to maintain animal production and enhance its products. In this line, the use of aromatic plant by-products in animal diet has been recently and widely considered, given their richness in bioactive compounds. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the inclusion of rosemary residues (RR) and protein sources on lamb meat quality. The experiment was carried out on 24 male Barbarine lambs (3 months old) with an average body weight (BW) of 17.8 ± 2.6 kg, which were divided into three homogeneous groups according to BW. The diet comprised 600 g of oat hay and 600 g of concentrate. Three types of concentrate were evaluated: commercial concentrate as the control group (C); rosemary residues (RR) plus soybean meal as the RRS group, and RR plus faba bean as the RRF group. After an experimental period of 65 days, lambs were slaughtered. The inclusion of RR in both concentrates increased the α-tocopherol and total polyphenol content in meat and protected meat against discoloration (high red index and chroma after 9 days of storage) but did not affect meat lipid oxidation, which was similar for all groups. The FA profile was affected by the inclusion of RR, with no effect from the source of protein (faba bean or soybean). The inclusion of RR in the concentrate increased the C18:2 n-6, C18:3n-3, C20:4 n-6, C20:5 n-3, and C22:5 n-3 content (p < 0.05). Consequently, the inclusion of RR also increased the total polyunsaturated FA (p < 0.05) and the ratio of polyunsaturated FA to saturated FA (p < 0.05). The results of this study demonstrate that concentrate based on RR could be useful for lamb meat production by improving the nutritional quality of meat, especially the fatty acid profile. In addition, soybean meal can be replaced by faba bean in lamb concentrate without affecting meat quality.

We evaluated the effects of a rumen-protected microencapsulated supplement from linseed oil (MO) on ruminal fluid, growth performance, meat quality, and fatty acid composition in Korean native steers. In an in vitro experiment, ruminal fluid was taken from two fistulated Holstein dairy cows. Different levels of MO (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%) were added to the diet. In an in vivo experiment, eight steers (average body weight = 597.1 ± 50.26 kg; average age = 23.8 ± 0.12 months) were assigned to two dietary groups, no MO (control) and MO (3% MO supplementation on a DM basis), for 186 days. The in vitro study revealed that 3% MO is an optimal dose, as there were decreases in the neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber digestibility at 48 h (p < 0.05). The in vivo study showed increases in the feed efficiency and average daily gain in the 3% MO group compared to the control group on days 1 to 90 (p < 0.05). Regarding meat quality, the shear force produced by the longissimus thoracis muscle in steers from the 3% MO group was lower than that produced by the control group (p < 0.05). Interestingly, in terms of the fatty acid profile, higher concentrations of C22:6n3 were demonstrated in the subcutaneous fat and higher concentrations of C18:3n3, C20:3n3, and C20:5n3 were found in the intramuscular fat from steers fed with 3% MO (p < 0.05). Our results indicate that supplementation with 3% MO supplements improves the growth performance and meat quality modulated by the omega-3 fatty acid content of meat in Korean native steers.
