The objective of this paper is to present semi-discrete analytical method for the longitudinal vibration of an elastic bar. Using lumped mass finite element method, we first obtain a system of second order ordinary differential equations. In terms of some transform technique we obtain the exact solution to the system, i.e. excellently semi-discrete analytical approximation to the longitudinal vibration. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The sonic drill mainly utilizes a sonic vibrator to initiate standing wave resonance of the drill string to achieve high-speed drilling. However, the explicit function relation between the lumped mass and modal frequency could not be revealed. Precisely controlling the sonic vibrator frequency to maintain the standing wave resonance of the drill string is difficult. In this study, the one-dimensional wave theory is employed to establish the longitudinal vibration differential equations of the sonic drill string with vibrator mass. The modal frequency equation of the sonic drill string with an inertial boundary is obtained via the method of separation of variables. The explicit expression of the modal frequency with respect to the vibrator mass and system structure parameters is calculated by mathematical analysis. Moreover, the influence of the large vibrator mass on the dynamic characteristics of the drill string is revealed during drilling of a shallow hole. This can precisely track the vibration control frequency of the sonic drill during shallow hole drilling, while maintaining the standing wave resonance of the drill string coupled with the sonic vibrator. Thus the efficiency of sonic drilling is improved.

ABSTRACT The tire model is essential for accurate and efficient vehicle dynamic simulation. In this article, an in-plane flexible ring tire model is proposed, in which the tire is composed of a rigid rim, a number of discretized lumped mass belt points, and numerous massless tread blocks attached on the belt. One set of tire model parameters is identified by approaching the predicted results with ADAMS® FTire virtual test results for one particular cleat test through the particle swarm method using MATLAB®. Based on the identified parameters, the tire model is further validated by comparing the predicted results with FTire for the static load-deflection tests and other cleat tests. Finally, several important aspects regarding the proposed model are discussed.

Presented in this study is investigation of dynamic behavior of a helical gear reduction by experimental and numerical methods. A closed-loop test rig is designed to measure vibrations of the example system, and the basic principle as well as relevant signal processing method is introduced. A hybrid user-defined element model is established to predict relative vibration acceleration at the gear mesh in a direction normal to contact surfaces. The other two numerical models are also constructed by lumped mass method and contact FEM to compare with the previous model in terms of dynamic responses of the system. First, the experiment data demonstrate that the loaded transmission error calculated by LTCA method is generally acceptable and that the assumption ignoring the tooth backlash is valid under the conditions of large loads. Second, under the common operating conditions, the system vibrations obtained by the experimental and numerical methods primarily occur at the first fourth-order meshing frequencies and that the maximum vibration amplitude, for each method, appears on the fourth-order meshing frequency. Moreover, root-mean-square (RMS) value of the acceleration increases with the increasing loads. Finally, according to the comparison of the simulation results, the variation tendencies of the RMS value along with input rotational speed agree well and that the frequencies where the resonances occur keep coincident generally. With summaries of merit and demerit, application of each numerical method is suggested for dynamic analysis of cylindrical gear system, which aids designers for desirable dynamic behavior of the system and better solutions to engineering problems.

The performance of the cantilever beam autoparametric vibration absorber with a lumped mass attached at an arbitrary point on the beam span is investigated. The absorber would have a distinct feature that in addition to the two-to-one internal resonance, the one-to-three and one-to-five internal resonances would also occur between flexural modes of the beam by tuning the mass and position of the lumped mass. Special attention is paid on studying the effect of these resonances on increasing the effectiveness and extending the range of excitation amplitudes at which the autoparametric vibration absorber remains effective. The problem is formulated based on the third-order nonlinear Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, where the assumed-mode method is used for deriving the discretized equations of motion. The numerical continuation method is then applied to obtain the frequency response curves and detect the bifurcation points. The harmonic balance method is also employed for detecting the type of internal resonances between flexural modes by inspecting the frequency response curves corresponding to different harmonics of the response. Parametric studies on the performance of the absorber are conducted by varying the position and mass of the lumped mass, while the frequency ratio of the primary system to the first mode of the beam is kept equal to two. Results indicated that the one-to-five internal resonance is especially responsible for the considerable enhancement of the performance.

The numerical procedures for dynamic analysis of mooring lines in the time domain and frequency domain were developed in this work. The lumped mass method was used to model the mooring lines. In the time domain dynamic analysis, the modified Euler method was used to solve the motion equation of mooring lines. The dynamic analyses of mooring lines under horizontal, vertical, and combined harmonic excitations were carried out. The cases of single-component and multicomponent mooring lines under these excitations were studied, respectively. The case considering the seabed contact was also included. The program was validated by comparing with the results from commercial software, Orcaflex. For the frequency domain dynamic analysis, an improved frame invariant stochastic linearization method was applied to the nonlinear hydrodynamic drag term. The cases of single-component and multicomponent mooring lines were studied. The comparison of results shows that frequency domain results agree well with nonlinear time domain results.
