Aluminum spray coating was applied onto AZ91D magnesium alloy. The effects of post heat treatment on the interfacial characteristics, especially the diffusion kinetics of magnesium and aluminum atoms across the interface were studied in this paper. It was observed that there was an obvious interface between the aluminum coating and the magnesium alloy substrate. It was found that post heat treatment could reduce the number of pores existed in the aluminum coating. The post heat treatment resulted in not only the change in the composition and microstructure of the aluminum coating, but also the improved metallurgical bonding between the coating and the substrate.

The effect of electrotransfer on the kinetics of growth of the diffusion zone during heat treatment of an explosion-welded bimetallic layered composite of the Cu-Al system has been investigated. It is shown that passing an electric current can accelerate the growth of the diffusion layer by up to 30% at short (up to ≈ 60 ÷ 90 minutes) exposures.

The kinetics of methane-oxidizing bioreactors for the degradation of toxic organics are modeled. Calculations of the fluxes of methane and toxic chlorinated hydrocarbons were made using a biofilm model. The model simulated the effects of competition by toxics and mediane on their enzymatic oxidation by the methane monooxygenase. Dual-competitive-substrate/diffusion kinetics were used to model biofilm co-metabolism, integrating equations of the following form:where S1 and S2 are the local concentrations of methane and toxic compound, respectively, and r and K are the maximum uptake rates and Monod coefficients, and x is the distance into the biofilm.

Research of hydrogen diffusion in VT6 alloy is carried out considering different types of heat treating and hydrogen charging. The influence of microalloying on the susceptibility to hydride formation and embrittlement of titanium alloys is analyzed, and also effects of an oxide film on hydrogen charging during heat treatment without protective atmosphere, are studied.

Powder metallurgical TiAl alloy was fabricated by gas atomization powders, and the effect of heat treatment temperature on the microstructure evolution and room tensile properties of PM TiAl alloy was investigated. The uniform fine duplex microstructure was formed in PM TiAl based alloy after being heat treated at 1250/2h followed by furnace cooling (FC)+ 900/6h (FC). When the first step heat treatment temperature was improved to 1360/1h, the near lamellar microstructure was achieved. The ductility of the alloy after heat treatment improved markedly to 1.2% and 0.6%, but the tensile strength decreased to 570MPa and 600MPa compared to 655MPa of as-HIP TiAl alloy. Post heat treatment at the higher temperature in the alpha plus gamma field would regenerate thermally induced porosity (TIP).
