Cu-Fe bimetallic grafted polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fiber complexes were prepared and optimized as the novel heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for the degradation of reactive dyes under UV irradiation. Cotton fabrics were dyed with three reactive dyes, namely, Reactive Red 195, Reactive Yellow 145, and Reactive Blue 222, in tap fresh water using exhaustion process. The spent dyeing effluents were then collected and degraded with the optimized Cu-Fe bimetallic grafted PTFE fiber complex/H2O2system. The treated dyeing effluents were characterized and reused for the dyeing of cotton fabrics through the same process. The effect of reuse process number on quality of the dyed cotton fabrics was examined. The results indicated that the Cu-Fe bimetallic modified PTFE fiber complex with a Cu/Fe molar ratio of 2.87 was found to be the most effective fibrous catalyst, which enhanced complete decolorization of the treated dyeing effluents with H2O2in 4 h. However, the TOC removal for the treated dyeing effluents was below 80%. The dyeing quality was not affected for three successive cycles. The increase in residual TOC value influences fourth dyeing cycle. Further TOC reduction of the treated effluents is needed for its repeated reuse in more than three dyeing cycles.

In operating of a flow battery, a certain flow rate should be maintained in order to guarantee its performance. But the pump consumed power may cause significant losses for the overall battery system. In this paper, a fresh electrical model is proposed for the novel single flow zinc-nickel battery. The model consists of both battery stack part and pump power part, which consequently not only predicts accurately the battery electrical output, but also estimates the pump consumed power at different electrolyte flow rate. Based on the validated model, the influence of pump power on flow battery’s system efficiency can be evaluated at different operating modes. At last, possible means to further improve the system efficiency of battery is discussed.

The purpose of this review is to aim a summary of the development in the use of different supports for the immobilisation of a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst, which areiron-containing materials. Various anchors and immobilisation methods that are universally employed to the remediation of wastewater are considered. Commonly, the immobilisation of a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst onto supportive material has chiefly been approved through one of two major routes; chemical route physical route or physical route. The advantages and disadvantages of various immobilisation methods to obtain a gigantic surface area iron-containing materials support is considered too.

The kinetics of the gas-phase thermolysis reaction of seven β-lactams and their thione analogues were investigated over the temperature range 533–603 K for the β-lactams and 463–542 K for the β-thiolactams. The average values of the energy of activation (Ea) (kJ mol−1) and Arrhenius log A (s–1) were, respectively, 170.8 ± 18.6 and 12.4 ± 1.6 for the lactams and 131.7 ± 18.2 and 11.0 ± 2.0 for the thione analogues. The entropy of activation (ΔS#) was negative for of the substrates and slightly positive for three. The rate constants (k) (s−1) were calculated for 510 K and compared for the two series of azetidinones. The effects of substituents on rates and the novel role played by the C=O and C=S moieties on the relative reactivities of the cyclic amides are rationalized on the basis of a formal retro[2+2]cycloaddition mechanism used earlier to explain the products of the gas-phase thermolysis reaction of the present azetidinones.

The decoloration of an azo dye reactive brilliant orange (X-GN) by a heterogeneous Fenton system using activated carbon–FeOOH catalyst (AC–FeOOH) and H2O2 was studied. Under typical conditions (pH 7.0, H2O2 10 mmol/L, AC–FeOOH 1.0 g/L and 30 °C), 98% decoloration rate of X-GN was achieved in 240 min. The decoloration efficiency of X-GN increased with higher H2O2 dosage, higher AC–FeOOH dosage and higher reaction temperature. Though the catalytic reaction was an acid driven process, a sufficient decoloration performance was still obtained in neutral and alkaline conditions. Kinetic studies suggested that the decoloration of X-GN followed a pseudo-first order reaction and the activation energy was 17.2 kJ/mol. Iron leaching from AC–FeOOH occurred during the reaction, but the decoloration efficiency of X-GN was still higher than 80% after four runs. The AC–FeOOH has a good stability and can be reused. Besides, the generation of massive iron-containing sludge can be avoided after reaction as the remaining ferric ions in the solution were less than 1 mg/L in this combined H2O2 and AC–FeOOH process.
