The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of X-rays used in micro X-ray computer tomography (µXCT) on the mechanical performance and microstructure of a variety of dental materials. Standardised bending beams (2 × 2 × 25 mm3) were forwarded to irradiation with an industrial tomograph. Using three-dimensional datasets, the porosity of the materials was quantified and flexural strength was investigated prior to and after irradiation. The thermal properties of irradiated and unirradiated materials were analysed and compared by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Single µXCT measurements led to a significant decrease in flexural strength of polycarbonate with acrylnitril-butadien-styrol (PC-ABS). No significant influence in flexural strength was identified for resin-based composites (RBCs), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and zinc phosphate cement (HAR) after a single irradiation by measurement. However, DSC results suggest that changes in the microstructure of PMMA are possible with increasing radiation doses (multiple measurements, longer measurements, higher output power from the X-ray tube). In summary, it must be assumed that X-ray radiation during µXCT measurement at high doses can lead to changes in the structure and properties of certain polymers.

The application of micro-CT scanning techniques on a small sample of “Seven-spot ladybirds”Coccinella septempunctata,collected in December 2009, identified an accumulation of material with a very high, relative X-ray attenuation value in the malpighian tubules of most but not all of the individuals sampled. The passage of metals such as cadmium in soil through a food chain to finally accumulate in high concentrations in ladybirds and lacewings has been previously reported. The identification of the dense material found in our sample of ladybirds, its origin, and the process by which it accumulates in, and is processed by, the malpighian tubules is the challenge ahead. The authors speculate that a straightforward means of monitoring levels of metallic pollutants in the environment might emerge.

The diagnosis is verified morphologically and is confirmed in operation. The role of X-ray examination methods in the diagnosis of endophytic stomach carcinoma is studied.

The risk of damage caused by reballing SnPb eutectic solder balls onto a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) active flip chip with a ball grid array (BGA) of SAC305 was studied. The effects of reballing performed by five different reballers were examined and compared. The active flip chip device selected included manufacturer specified resistance between eight (8) differential port pairs. The path resistance between these pins following reballing, as compared to an unreballed device, was used to assess damage accumulation in the package. 2-dimensional x-ray microscopy, acoustic microscopy, and x-ray computer tomography were also used to characterize the effects of reballing. These studies indicated that no measureable damage was incurred by the reballing process, implying that reballed devices should function as well as non-reballed devices in the same application.
