Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a novel surface treatment process to produce thick, dense metal oxide coatings, especially on light metals, primarily to improve their wear and corrosion resistance. The coating manufactured from the PEO process is relatively superior to normal anodic oxidation. It is widely employed in the fields of mechanical, petrochemical, and biomedical industries, to name a few. Several investigations have been carried out to study the coating performance developed through the PEO process in the past. This review attempts to summarize and explain some of the fundamental aspects of the PEO process, mechanism of coating formation, the processing conditions that impact the process, the main characteristics of the process, the microstructures evolved in the coating, the mechanical and tribological properties of the coating, and the influence of environmental conditions on the coating process. Recently, the PEO process has also been employed to produce nanocomposite coatings by incorporating nanoparticles in the electrolyte. This review also narrates some of the recent developments in the field of nanocomposite coatings with examples and their applications. Additionally, some of the applications of the PEO coatings have been demonstrated. Moreover, the significance of the PEO process, its current trends, and its scope of future work are highlighted.

Abstract A mathematical description for the (Zn) - coating formation with the presence of flux in the zinc bath is presented. This description includes the progressive vanishing of the products of the flux disintegration. A function which expresses the flux vanishing is formulated. The solidification of some phase sub-layers in the (Zn) - coating is considered with the use of a hypothetical pseudo-ternary phase diagram Fe-Zn-flux. Some relationships are formulated to define the varying Zn - solute redistribution as observed across the sub-layers. The relationships are based on the mass balance analyzed for the coating / bath / flux system. An amount of the growing phase in a given sub-layers is also defined mathematically.

This article presents the brief overview of fairly recent and eco-friendly micro arc oxidation (MAO) coating technology. The weight-cost-performance benefits in general raised the interest to utilize lightweight materials, especially the aluminum and its alloys. Despite numerous engineering advantages, the aluminum alloys themselves do not possess suitable tribology and corrosion resistance. Therefore, improvements in surface properties are essential to enable developing potential industrial applications. For improving wear and corrosion resistance of Al alloys, the most demanding surface properties are high hardness and chemical inertness. The technical and technological limitations associated with traditional anodizing and hard anodizing processes have been the strongest driving force behind the development of new MAO technology. While presenting the key technological elements associated with the MAO process, the basic mechanism of coating formation and its phase gradient nature is presented. Influence of various process parameters including the electrolyte composition has been discussed. The typical microstructural features and distribution of α- and γ-Al2O3 phases across the coating thickness as a key strategy to form dense coatings with required mechanical, tribological, and corrosion properties which are vital to meet potential application demands are briefly illustrated.

The high electrochemical activity of the aircraft 1579 aluminium alloy with a welded joint and the necessity of the coating formation to protect this material against corrosion as well as to increase the stability of the weld interface in the corrosive medium has been previously established. In this work, two suggested methods of protective coating formation based on plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) in tartrate-fluoride electrolyte significantly increased the protective properties of the welded joint area of the 1579 Al alloy. The electrochemical properties of the formed surface layers have been investigated using SVET (scanning vibrating electrode technique) and SIET (scanning ion-selective electrode technique), EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), OCP (open circuit potential), and PDP (potentiodynamic polarization) in 0.5 M NaCl. The less expressed character of the local electrochemical processes on the welded 1579 Al alloy with the composite coating in comparison with the base PEO-layer has been established. Polymer-containing coatings obtained using superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene (SPTFE) treatment are characterized by the best possible protective properties and prevent the material from corrosion destruction. Single SPTFE treatment enables one to increase PEO-layer protection by 5.5 times. The results of this study indicate that SVET and SIET are promising to characterize and to compare corrosion behaviour of coated and uncoated samples with a welded joint in chloride-containing media.
