The aim of this study was to describe the quality attributes of a freeze-dried preparation obtained from freshwater mussel Sinanodonta woodiana (SW) soft tissue in respect to its potential as a novel pet food ingredient. After ecotoxicological testing of the raw material with MARA (Microbial Assay for Risk Assessment), the basic physico-chemical properties of the powder, such as approximate composition, bulk density, color parameters, water activity, electrophoretic analysis (SDS-PAGE), solubility, gelling and emulsifying capacity, were analyzed. The powder with a water activity of 0.43 offers a toxically safe preparation that contains over 34% protein/100 g of dry matter (DM). The SDS-PAGE profile showed twelve protein bands with a molecular weight (MW) ranging from >250 to 10 kDa. Taurine content has been estimated at an essential amount above 150 mg/100 g of DM. The powder possessed desirable emulsifying properties with 230 mL per 1 g and demonstrated the ability to form a firmer gel with a strength of 152.9 g at a temperature above 80 °C with at least 10% protein content. The L*, a*, and b* values characterizing powder color were found to be 69.49, 16.33, and 3.86, respectively. The SW mussel powder seems to be a promising ingredient that can be added with other binding or gelling agents in order to improve both the taste and acceptance of the final pet food products.

ABSTRACT Ninety-two strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from a Malaysian food ingredient, chili bo, stored for up to 25 days at 28°C with no benzoic acid (product A) or with 7,000 mg of benzoic acid kg−1 (product B). The strains were divided into eight groups by traditional phenotypic tests. A total of 43 strains were selected for comparison of their sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) whole-cell protein patterns with a SDS-PAGE database of LAB. Isolates from product A were identified asLactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus farciminis,Pediococcus acidilactici, Enterococcus faecalis, and Weissella confusa. Five strains belonging to clusters which could not be allocated to existing species by SDS-PAGE were further identified by 16S rRNA sequence comparison. One strain was distantly related to theLactobacillus casei/Pediococcus group. Two strains were related to Weissella at the genus or species level. Two other strains did not belong to any previously described 16S rRNA group of LAB and occupied an intermediate position between theL. casei/Pediococcus group and the Weissellagroup and species of Carnobacterium. The latter two strains belong to the cluster of LAB that predominated in product B. The incidence of new species and subspecies of LAB in chili bo indicate the high probability of isolation of new LAB from certain Southeast Asian foods. None of the isolates exhibited bacteriocin activity against L. plantarum ATCC 14917 and LMG 17682.

We identified the species of “kerang kapah” (hard clam) using the Gel Electrophoresis SDS Page, inorder to clarify the species of kerang kapah those found living along the East Coast of TarakanIsland. The study was conducted from July to December 2014. The kerang kapah were collectedfrom the several parts of East Coast Tarakan Island. Eight group samples of kerang kapah were used for Gel Electrophoresis SDS Page and scanned using the IMAGE software. Generally, thekerang kapah those found at the shouth part of East Coast of Tarakan Island have very similarmorphologies and shell colors, making species identification difficult.  Four species of kerang kapahwere identified. Three species belong to Veneridae and one species belong to Corbiludae. Thespecies of Veneridae were Meretrix meretrix, Meretrix lyrata, and Meretrix sp. The species karangkapah belong to Corbiludae is Polymesoda erusa. Keywords: kerang kapah, meretrix, polymesoda, gel electrophoresis.

Keywords: prifil protein, daging sapi, SDS page, elektroforesis AbstractBeef is an important food ingredient in meeting nutritional needs. Protein in beef is  easier  to  digest  than  protein  from  plants  (vegetables).  Papaya  leaf    is  a medicinal plant because it contains alkaloids and proteolytic enzymes, papain, khimopapain,  and  lyosomes,  which  are  useful  in  the  digestive  process  and facilitate the work of the intestines. Papaya contains protease enzymes (protein decomposers), papain and khimopapain. Both of these enzymes have the ability to decompose the bonds in the protein molecule so that the protein breaks down into polypeptides and dipeptides. Based on the research done in getting the following results in each sample, samples marinated with papaya leaf for 10 minutes have 11 protein bands, samples marinated during 20 minutes have 16 protein bands and samples marinated for 30 minutes have 15 protein bands. Kata Kunci: prifil protein, beef, SDS page, elektroforesis

A material irradiated with electrons emits x-rays having energies characteristic of the elements present. Chemical combination between elements results in a small shift of the peak energies of these characteristic x-rays because chemical bonds between different elements have different energies. The energy differences of the characteristic x-rays resulting from valence electron transitions can be used to identify the chemical species present and to obtain information about the chemical bond itself. Although these peak-energy shifts have been well known for a number of years, their use for chemical-species identification in small volumes of material was not realized until the development of the electron microprobe.

Thrombocytes (TC), the avian equivalent of blood platelets, support hemostasis by aggregating at sites of injury. Studies in our lab suggested that fibrinogen (fib) is a requisite cofactor for TC aggregation but operates by an undefined mechanism. To study the interaction of fib with TC and to identify fib receptors on cells, fib was purified from pigeon plasma, conjugated to colloidal gold and used both to facilitate aggregation and as a receptor probe. Described is the application of computer assisted reconstruction and stereo whole mount microscopy to visualize the 3-D organization of fib receptors at sites of cell contact in TC aggregates and on adherent cells.Pigeon TC were obtained from citrated whole blood by differential centrifugation, washed with Ca++ free Hank's balanced salts containing 0.3% EDTA (pH 6.5) and resuspended in Ca++ free Hank's. Pigeon fib was isolated by precipitation with PEG-1000 and the purity assessed by SDS-PAGE. Fib was conjugated to 25nm colloidal gold by vortexing and the conjugates used as the ligand to identify fib receptors.
