Postural extensions of the abdomen of the crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, could be evoked by mechanical stimulation of a single thoracic leg. Movement of a single leg joint was sufficient to initiate an extension response. Vigorous abdominal extensions were initiated either by depression of the whole leg (WLD) or by flexion of the mero-carpal joint (MCF). Weaker extension responses were obtained by depression of the thoracic-coxal and coxo-basal joints. Similar stimulation of the chelipeds did not elicit an abdominal extension response. Single-frame analysis of motion pictures of crayfish responding to WLD or MCF stimulation of a 2nd thoracic leg showed that the responses evoked by the two different stimulus situations were nearly identical. They differed principally in the responses of the leg located contralateral to the stimulated leg. Movements of most of the cephalic, thoracic and abdominal appendages accompanied the abdominal extension response. Only the eyes remained stationary throughout the response. The mean values of the latencies for the initiation of appendage movement ranged from 125 to 204 ma; abdominal movement had a mean latency of about 220 ms. The abdominal extension reflex resulted from the activity of the tonic superficial extensor muscles. The deep phasic extensor muscles were silent during the response. The mean latencies for the initiation of superficial extensor muscle activity by WLD and MCF stimulation were 53·7 and 50·0 ms respectively.

SummaryObjective: Injuries of the carpal joint are rare in cats. The most common cause is a fall from a height, known as ‘high-rise syndrome’. So far, only limited data about carpal joint injuries (CJI) in cats are available. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology, aetiology, location, and type of CJI in cats.Methods: Case records of cats diagnosed with CJI between 1998 and 2010 were retrospectively analysed. Data concerning signalment, history and type of CJI, accompanying systemic injuries and further orthopaedic injuries were collected.Results: During the study period, 73 cats were diagnosed with CJI (87 injured carpal joints) and the prevalence in our hospital population was 0.26% (73 out of 28,482). Cats with CJI were more likely to be presented in the period from April-October (85%, p = 0.003) compared with the rest of the year. Carpal joint injuries were caused by a fall from a height in 72.6% of the cases. Of all carpal joints, the ante-brachiocarpal joint was predominantly injured (50.6%, p = 0.001) and this was commonly caused by a fall from the fourth floor or higher (p = 0.002). The carpometacarpal joint was predominantly affected by a fall from heights up to the third floor (p = 0.004).Clinical significance: The data of this study confirm previous data with respect to time of occurrence and cause of injury. Of note, the height of the fall appears to influence the location of the injury within the carpus of cats.

SummaryAn 11 month old, female Golden Retriever was examined for chronic right thoracic limb lameness and progressive swelling of the distal radius. Survey radiographs revealed an expansile, osteolytic lesion in the distal metaphyseal region of the radius consistent with an aneurismal bone cyst. Diagnostic imaging, biopsy, angiography and histopathology supported this diagnosis. The condition was treated by segmental osteotomy of the affected radius, placement of a vascularized autogenous bone graft harvested from the contralateral ulna, and stabilized using a plate that incorporated the carpal joint. The pathogenesis, diagnostic dilemmas and treatment options in dogs and human patients is discussed.

Disseminated mycosis caused by Paecilomyces varioti in a female German shepherd dog presented with chronic forelimb lameness is described. Radiographs of the swollen carpal joint revealed geographic lysis of the radial epiphysis. Diagnosis was based on cytological demonstration of fungal hyphae and chlamydiospores, as well as fungal culture of fluid obtained by arthrocentesis. Temporary remission was characterised by markedly improved clinical signs and laboratory parameters, following treatment with ketoconazole. The dog was euthanased 9 months after the initial diagnosis, following the diagnosis of multifocal discospondylitis. This appears to be the longest described period of temporary remission obtained with treatment in dogs with paecilomycosis. Clinical, clinicopathological and necropsy findings of this disease in another German shepherd dog are briefly described.

The sheltering of old, unproductive and abandoned cows in traditional cow shelters, known as gaushalas, has been practiced in India since ancient times. Cows are kept in these shelters until they die of natural causes. The welfare of the cows in these shelters was assessed through a cross-sectional study of 54 cow shelters in six states of India. A total of 1620 cows were examined to assess the prevalence of lameness in these cows, and the associated risk factors for lameness were identified through the measurement of animal-based and resource-based welfare indicators. The overall lameness prevalence was 4.2%. The majority (86%) had mild to moderate hock joint swellings but no or only mild carpal joint injuries. Approximately one-half had mild to moderate hock joint hair loss and most were free of hock joint ulcerations. Claw overgrowth was present in almost one half of the cows. Lameness prevalence was positively correlated with coat dirtiness, hock and carpal joint lesions, diarrhea and claw overgrowth scores. In a multivariate analysis, lameness prevalence increased as the Body Condition Score (BCS) decreased and was associated with increased udder dirtiness, the ulceration of the hock joint, carpal joint injuries and claw overgrowth. Resource-based indicators measured at the shelter level suggested that an absence of bedding in the sheds and an increase in the gradient of the shed flooring increased lameness. Addressing the principle risk factors identified for lameness in the sheltered cows (low body condition, dirty udders, lesions on the hock and carpal joints, overgrown claws, and a steep floor gradient) may help to reduce this serious animal welfare problem.
