Background: With the advance of technology, our capacity to assess patients with dementia is also developing. It is possible to administer cognitive examinations using technology, such as the iPad-based Toronto Cognitive Assessment, but hitherto difficult to autonomously administer them. Many of the ’inputs’ from patients could be easily scored with software, but highly variable inputs such as the clock drawing are extremely difficult to score, precluding automated administration and scoring. This work focuses on the development of a neural network designed to assess cube drawings, infinity drawings, and clock drawings. Methods: 3200 drawings, evenly split between clocks, cubes and infinities were generated, with half being correct and half incorrect. A SqueezeNet was trained on 2000 images, validated on 800 drawings, and then tested on 400 drawings. Results: The SqueezeNet was able to achieve 97% accuracy on 400 images it had never seen before in categorizing images as “Cube”, “Clock”, “Infinity”, or “Other” (incorrectly drawn). Conclusions: This neural network can successfully determine the difference between correctly and incorrectly drawn images commonly used in cognitive examinations, overcoming the final barrier to autonomously administering and scoring cognitive examinations. Next steps are to clinically validate an autonomous examination program which has been modeled after the Addenbrooke Cognitive Examination-3.

Abstrak— At present technological developments, especially in the field of computer vision, are showing significant performance such as the application of convolutional neural networks that have a very high degree of accuracy, for example improving video quality which recently has image restoration such as super resolution (VSR) thanks to deep learning with the aim of helping produce better visual videos. The use of video cameras for mobile devices is now increasingly highly developed. Nowadays mobile devices are experiencing a rapid increase in quality especially in cameras. However, physical limitations such as the small sensor size, compact lens and the lack of supporting hardware can prevent cellular devices from achieving good video camera quality results. For that many method approaches are applied, one of which is the CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) method. This method can improve the image of video recordings that have poor quality. Предлагаются методы построения платформ прототипирования высокопроизводительных систем на кристалле для задач искусственного интеллекта. Изложены требования к платформам подобного класса и принципы изменения проекта СнК для имплементации в прототип. Рассматриваются методы отладки проектов на платформе прототипирования. Приведены результаты работ алгоритмов компьютерного зрения с использованием нейросетевых технологий на FPGA-прототипе семантических ядер ELcore. Methods have been proposed for building prototyping platforms for high-performance systems-on-chip for artificial intelligence tasks. The requirements for platforms of this class and the principles for changing the design of the SoC for implementation in the prototype have been described as well as methods of debugging projects on the prototyping platform. The results of the work of computer vision algorithms using neural network technologies on the FPGA prototype of the ELcore semantic cores have been presented.

Abstract Background Automating cytology-based cervical cancer screening could alleviate the shortage of skilled pathologists in developing countries. Up until now, computer vision experts have attempted numerous semi and fully automated approaches to address the need. Yet, these days, leveraging the astonishing accuracy and reproducibility of deep neural networks has become common among computer vision experts. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to classify single-cell Pap smear (cytology) images using pre-trained deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) image classifiers. We have fine-tuned the top ten pre-trained DCNN image classifiers and evaluated them using five class single-cell Pap smear images from SIPaKMeD dataset. The pre-trained DCNN image classifiers were selected from Keras Applications based on their top 1% accuracy. Results Our experimental result demonstrated that from the selected top-ten pre-trained DCNN image classifiers DenseNet169 outperformed with an average accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score of 0.990, 0.974, 0.974, and 0.974, respectively. Moreover, it dashed the benchmark accuracy proposed by the creators of the dataset with 3.70%. Conclusions Even though the size of DenseNet169 is small compared to the experimented pre-trained DCNN image classifiers, yet, it is not suitable for mobile or edge devices. Further experimentation with mobile or small-size DCNN image classifiers is required to extend the applicability of the models in real-world demands. In addition, since all experiments used the SIPaKMeD dataset, additional experiments will be needed using new datasets to enhance the generalizability of the models.

Lower limb exoskeleton robots help with walking movements through mechanical force, by identifying the wearer’s walking intention. When the exoskeleton robot is lightweight and comfortable to wear, the stability of walking increases, and energy can be used efficiently. However, because it is difficult to implement the complex anatomical movements of the human body, most are designed simply. Due to this, misalignment between the human and robot movement causes the wearer to feel uncomfortable, and the stability of walking is reduced. In this paper, we developed a two degrees of freedom (2DoF) ankle exoskeleton robot with a subtalar joint and a talocrural joint, applying a four-bar linkage to realize the anatomical movement of a simple 1DoF structure mainly used for ankles. However, bidirectional tendon-driven actuators (BTDAs) do not consider the difference in a length change of both cables due to dorsiflexion (DF) and plantar flexion (PF) during walking, causing misalignment. To solve this problem, a BTDA was developed by considering the length change of both cables. Cable-driven actuators and exoskeleton robot systems create uncertainty. Accordingly, adaptive control was performed with a proportional-integral-differential neural network (PIDNN) controller to minimize system uncertainty.

Purpose Wrist-cuff oscillometric blood pressure monitors are very popular in the portable medical device market. However, its accuracy has always been controversial. In addition to the oscillatory pressure pulse wave, the finger photoplethysmography (PPG) can provide information on blood pressure changes. A blood pressure measurement system integrating the information of pressure pulse wave and the finger PPG may improve measurement accuracy. Additionally, a neural network can synthesize the information of different types of signals and approximate the complex nonlinear relationship between inputs and outputs. The purpose of this study is to verify the hypothesis that a wrist-cuff device using a neural network for blood pressure estimation from both the oscillatory pressure pulse wave and PPG signal may improve the accuracy. Design/methodology/approach A PPG sensor was integrated into a wrist blood pressure monitor, so the finger PPG and the oscillatory pressure wave could be detected at the same time during the measurement. After the peak detection, curves were fitted to the data of pressure pulse amplitude and PPG pulse amplitude versus time. A genetic algorithm-back propagation neural network was constructed. Parameters of the curves were inputted into the neural network, the outputs of which were the measurement values of blood pressure. Blood pressure measurements of 145 subjects were obtained using a mercury sphygmomanometer, the developed device with the neural network algorithm and an Omron HEM-6111 blood pressure monitor for comparison. Findings For the systolic blood pressure (SBP), the difference between the proposed device and the mercury sphygmomanometer is 0.0062 ± 2.55 mmHg (mean ± SD) and the difference between the Omron device and the mercury sphygmomanometer is 1.13 ± 9.48 mmHg. The difference in diastolic blood pressure between the mercury sphygmomanometer and the proposed device was 0.28 ± 2.99 mmHg. The difference in diastolic blood pressure between the mercury sphygmomanometer and Omron HEM-6111 was −3.37 ± 7.53 mmHg. Originality/value Although the difference in the SBP error between the proposed device and Omron HEM-6111 was not remarkable, there was a significant difference between the proposed device and Omron HEM-6111 in the diastolic blood pressure error. The developed device showed an improved performance. This study was an attempt to enhance the accuracy of wrist-cuff oscillometric blood pressure monitors by using the finger PPG and the neural network. The hardware framework constructed in this study can improve the conventional wrist oscillometric sphygmomanometer and may be used for continuous measurement of blood pressure.

<div>Engineering proteins to have desired properties by mutating amino acids at specific sites is commonplace. Such engineered proteins must be stable to function. Experimental methods used to determine stability at throughputs required to scan the protein sequence space thoroughly are laborious. To this end, many machine learning based methods have been developed to predict thermodynamic stability changes upon mutation. These methods have been evaluated for symmetric consistency by testing with hypothetical reverse mutations. In this work, we propose transitive data augmentation, evaluating transitive consistency, and a new machine learning based method, first of its kind, that incorporates both symmetric and transitive properties into the architecture. Our method, called SCONES, is an interpretable neural network that estimates a residue's contributions towards protein stability dG in its local structural environment. The difference between independently predicted contributions of the reference and mutant residues in a missense mutation is reported as dG. We show that this self-consistent machine learning architecture is immune to many common biases in datasets, relies less on data than existing methods, and is robust to overfitting.</div><div><br></div>
