AbstractMaturity levels of components in early phases of product development are often assessed with Technology Readiness Levels. However, developing Multi-Material-Design (MMD) concepts for lightweight design, not only the manufacturability of the individual components is decisive, but also their joinability with each other and their integration into the rest system. This paper presents an approach for the evaluation of maturity levels of MMD concepts on the basis of cardinal coefficients considering a time forecast of the manufacturing and joining technologies required in the concept.

Abstract The multi-material design presented contains EN AW-6016 aluminum and high strength CR330Y590T-DP steel. This dissimilar combination is an example of an affordable lightweight design solution, but it requires an adapted joining technology. Hybrid joining technologies such as selfpiercing riveting (SPR) in combination with a structural adhesive enables an assembly of such dissimilar material combinations. In addition to higher manufacturing costs for mechanical joining the design process still requires a great amount of effort. This study provides a simple approach for assessing hybrid joined multi-material connections. Therefore, tests for several combinations of the most relevant parameters on fatigue life (material properties, sheet thickness, load cases) were performed under quasi-static and cyclic loads. Based on the data acquired, it is shown that the fatigue life of hybrid joined connections can be estimated by superposing the contributing fatigue life of purely SPR and purely adhesive joints.

Absorptive capacity is a common barrier to knowledge transfer at the individual level. However, technology absorptive capacity can enhance an individual’s learning behaviour. This study investigates that technology readiness, the tools for knowledge sources, social influences, and social networks influence an individual’s absorptive capacity on an adaptation of the individual learning behaviour. A quantitative approach is used to assess the presence of a causal relationship from the constructs mentioned above. Data were collected from university students in Australia to examine the hypotheses. With 199 responses, a partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) approach was used for the analysis. The results generated mixed findings. Individual’s technological belief in optimism and innovation and social influences had a significantly weaker effect on individual absorptive capacity, which in turn had a significantly weaker impact on their learning behaviour.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify measure and prioritise the perceived importance of supply chain issues within the automotive industry related to information flow during product development (PD). Design/methodology/approach – This study analyses empirical data captured from semi-structure interviews with 15 multinational companies operating in the automotive sector. Data collected are analysed using a standard methodology identified from the literature. The individual issues captured are classified against 14 clusters that represent the core and the fundamental supply chain issues of information flow. Findings – This study showed that half of the issues captured are related to the inadequate information systems used. The cluster that had the majority of individual issues is related to suppliers that are not directly connected with their customers through an enterprise system. However it was identified that two fundamental clusters justify the decision of not being directly connected. Implementing and maintaining multiple enterprise systems can be a big overhead for multinational companies working with a high number of customers. Originality/value – Although several studies have proved the benefits that can be obtained through supply chain collaboration, there are relatively little empirical studies that seek to explore the understanding of supply chain issues in regards to information flow especially during PD. By identifying, measuring and prioritising the importance of supply chain issues this study provides researchers and practitioners guidance in developing better tools and defining more efficient processes.

Recent surveys show that there are unlimited opportunities in the food, dairy, and regulatory agency fields. An entire new food product development program has started with the space age. It has become imperative to consider anew universal nutrition problems. Industry and educational institutions, as well as the individual himself have a responsibility to develop present opportunities through recruitment programs, training programs, research projects, and incentive plans. The future holds higher technological demands which must: be developed to meet the food needs of the world's population.
