Aeroelastic response of helicopter rotors using a 3D unsteady aerodynamic solver

The prediction of blade deflections and vibratory hub loads concerning helicopter main rotors in forward flight is the objective of this work. They are determined by using an aeroelastic model derived through the coupling between a nonlinear blade structural model and a boundary integral equation solver for three-dimensional, unsteady, potential aerodynamics. The Galerkin method is used for the spatial integration, whereas the periodic blade response is determined by a harmonic balance approach. This aeroelastic model yields a unified approach for aeroelastic response and blade pressure prediction that may be used for aeroacoustic purposes, with the possibility of including effects from both blade-vortex interaction and multiple-body aerodynamic interaction. Quasi-steady aerodynamic models with wake-inflow from the three-dimensional aerodynamic solver are also applied, in order to perform a comparative study. Numerical results show the capability of the aeroelastic tool to evaluate blade response and vibratory hub loads for a helicopter main rotor in level flight conditions, and examine the sensitivity of the predictions on the aerodynamics model used.

With the aim of alleviating the noise annoyance emitted by blade–vortex interactions occurring on helicopter main rotors, the present work presents a methodology suitable for the identification of a multi-cyclic harmonic controller based on the actuation of rotor blades equipped with Miniature Trailing Edge Effectors. The objective of the control methodology is the direct suppression of the aerodynamic noise sources by generation of localized high-harmonic blade–vortex interaction counter-actions. The set-up of control devices is selected on the basis of the blade–vortex interaction scenario, taking into account a trade-off between effectiveness and power requirement. The control law is efficiently identified by means of an optimal controller synthesized through suitable two-dimensional multi-vortex, parallel blade–vortex interaction problems. The proposed methodology is validated by the application to realistic helicopter main rotors during low-speed descent flights, numerically simulated through high-fidelity aerodynamic and aeroacoustic solvers based, respectively, upon a three-dimensional free-wake boundary element method to solve the potential flow around rotors in blade–vortex interaction conditions and the Farassat 1A formulation. Results concerning the capability of the proposed controller to alleviate the blade–vortex interaction noise emitted by a realistic helicopter main rotor are presented and discussed.

This paper deals with the computational analysis of acoustic fields generated by helicopter rotors when Blade-Vortex Interactions (BVI) occur. The prediction procedure starts from the determination of the steady periodic blade deformations. Then, the BVI-affected, unsteady aerodynamics solution is obtained by a potential-flow boundary integral formulation suited for aeronautical configurations experiencing blade-wake impingements. It is applicable to blades with arbitrary shape and motion and evaluates both wake distortion and blade pressure field. Finally, the noise field radiated by the rotor is computed through an aeroacoustic tool based on the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation. The numerical investigation examines the sensitivity of BVI noise prediction on the aeroelastic model applied for the calculation of blade deformations, and assesses the accuracy of the results through correlation with experimental data concerning a helicopter main rotor in descent flight. Noise predicted is examined in terms of both acoustic pressure signatures and noise radiation characteristics.

Class/shape transformation (CST) method has advantages of adjustable design variables and powerful parametric geometric shape design ability and has been widely used in aerodynamic design and optimization processes. Three-dimensional CST is an extension for complex aircraft and can generate diverse three-dimensional aircraft and the corresponding mesh automatically and quickly. This paper proposes a parametric structural modeling method based on gridding feature extraction from the aerodynamic mesh generated by the three-dimensional CST method. This novel method can create parametric structural model for fuselage and wing and keep the coordination between the aerodynamic mesh and the structural mesh. Based on the generated aerodynamic model and structural model, an automatic process for aeroelastic modeling and solving is presented with the panel method for aerodynamic solver and NASTRAN for structural solver. A reusable launch vehicle (RLV) is used to illustrate the process for aeroelastic modeling and solving. The result shows that this method can generate aeroelastic model for diverse complex three-dimensional aircraft automatically and reduce the difficulty of aeroelastic analysis dramatically. It provides an effective approach to make use of the aeroelastic analysis at the conceptual design phase for modern aircraft.

Compared with continuous elements, discontinuous elements advance in processing the discontinuity of physical variables at corner points and discretized models with complex boundaries. However, the computational accuracy of discontinuous elements is sensitive to the positions of element nodes. To reduce the side effect of the node position on the results, this paper proposes employing partially discontinuous elements to compute the time-domain boundary integral equation of 3D elastodynamics. Using the partially discontinuous element, the nodes located at the corner points will be shrunk into the element, whereas the nodes at the non-corner points remain unchanged. As such, a discrete model that is continuous on surfaces and discontinuous between adjacent surfaces can be generated. First, we present a numerical integration scheme of the partially discontinuous element. For the singular integral, an improved element subdivision method is proposed to reduce the side effect of the time step on the integral accuracy. Then, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by two numerical examples. Meanwhile, we study the influence of the positions of the nodes on the stability and accuracy of the computation results by cases. Finally, the recommended value range of the inward shrink ratio of the element nodes is provided.

The value of the tangential velocity on the Boundary Value Problem (BVP) is inaccurate when comparing the results with analytical solutions by Indirect Boundary Element Method (IBEM), especially at the intersection region where the normal vector is changing rapidly (named nonsmooth boundary). In this study, the singularity of the BVP, which is directly arranged in the center of the surface of the fluid computing domain, is moved outside the computational domain by using the Desingularized Boundary Integral Equation Method (DBIEM). In order to analyze the accuracy of the IBEM/DBIEM and validate the above-mentioned problem, three-dimensional uniform flow over a sphere has been presented. The convergent study of the presented model has been investigated, including desingularized distance in the DBIEM. Then, the numerical results were compared with the analytical solution. It was found that the accuracy of velocity distribution in the flow field has been greatly improved at the intersection region, which has suddenly changed the boundary surface shape of the fluid domain. The conclusions can guide the study on the flow over nonsmooth boundaries by using boundary value method.

The title compound, trisodium dicobalt(II) (arsenate/phosphate) (diarsenate/diphosphate), was prepared by a solid-state reaction. It is isostructural with Na3Co2AsO4As2O7. The framework shows the presence of CoX22O12(X2 is statistically disordered with As0.95P0.05) units formed by sharing corners between Co1O6octahedra andX22O7groups. These units form layers perpendicular to [010]. Co2O6octahedra andX1O4(X1 = As0.54P0.46) tetrahedra form Co2X1O8chains parallel to [001]. Cohesion between layers and chains is ensured by theX22O7groups, giving rise to a three-dimensional framework with broad tunnels, running along thea- andc-axis directions, in which the Na+ions reside. The two Co2+cations, theX1 site and three of the seven O atoms lie on special positions, with site symmetries 2 andmfor the Co,mfor theX1, and 2 andm(× 2) for the O sites. One of two Na atoms is disordered over three special positions [occupancy ratios 0.877 (10):0.110 (13):0.066 (9)] and the other is in a general position with full occupancy. A comparison between structures such as K2CdP2O7, α-NaTiP2O7and K2MoO2P2O7is made. The proposed structural model is supported by charge-distribution (CHARDI) analysis and bond-valence-sum (BVS) calculations. The distortion of the coordination polyhedra is analyzed by means of the effective coordination number.
