From the opening pages of the preface until the last sentence of the conclusion, this book is well-written, authoritative, and insightful. The authordraws upon some 40 years of rich experience as an anthropologist in theMiddle East and further afield to offer a clear analytical account of fundamentalismin the three monotheistic traditions of Christianity, Judaism, andIslam. His book also draws upon a decade of teaching and debate aboutfundamentalism with undergraduate students at the State University of New York at Binghamton, and the clarity of his writing reflects an appreciationof the needs and interests of students.Antoun defines the phenomenon of fundamentalism as “an orientation tothe world, a particular worldview and ethos, and as a movement of protestand outrage against the rapid change that has overtaken the people of anincreasingly global civilization at the end of the twentieth century.” He arguesthat it has defining characteristics wherever it is found: scripturalism (beliefin the literal inerrancy of sacred scripture); the search for purity in an impureworld; traditioning (making the ancient immediately relevant to the contemporarysituation); totalism (taking religion beyond the worship center tohome, school, workplace, bank, and elsewhere); activism (challenging establishments, both political and religious, sometimes by violent protest); struggleof good and evil; and selective modernization and controlled acculturation. These themes are explored in depth over the course of five chapters, with a sixth chapter based on a case study that presents a recording of conversationsbetween the author and a “fundamentalist” in Jordan in 1986 ...

The article outlines the study of political texts from psycholinguistic perspectives. The research generalizes and empirically verifies a psycholinguistic approach to the study of political discourse and focuses on frame analysis, one of the most powerful psycholinguistic techniques. Frame structure embraces conceptual components that allow accumulating information from different sources. The public speeches of two great Ukrainian and American political leaders Viktor Yushchenko and Barack Obama were the principal sources of the analysis. Frame analysis was applied to study cross-cultural peculiarities that depict national nature of two cultures. Data analysis shows that discourse of the Ukrainian leader is mostly focused on categories such as people, power, liberty. The discourse of the American leader contains categories such as economy, money, people, psychological constructs. The results show that people have become top-priority for V. Yushchenko. They are the people the Ukrainian politician addresses, believes and trusts. V. Yushchenko also carries about freedom, independence and liberty of any Ukrainian citizen. B. Obama is deeply concentrated on economy and finance of his country. It has become obvious that he is ready to implement the set of reforms for the country to thrive. The category of psychological constructs shows that the American politician is full of respect and proud for his country ant population. The radical variety of two speeches is caused by different economic conditions, values and mentality of two cultures and personal purposes and objectives of two representatives. Hox genes instruct positional identity along the anterior-posterior axis of the animal body. A new paper in Development addresses the question of how similar Hox genes can define diverse cell fates, using mouse motor neurons as a model. To hear more about the work, we caught up with the paper's two first authors, PhD students Milica Bulajić and Divyanshi Srivastava, and their respective supervisors Esteban Mazzoni (Associate Professor of Biology at New York University, USA) and Shaun Mahony (Assistant Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Penn State University, USA).

Laura Olson is one of a small but energetic and influential group of Christian political scientists determined to bring the debate politically legitimate called it either racist or sexist. Yet, somewhat surprisingly, African American pastors held the most consistently conservative views on family values, although they also saw the connections among crime, violence, and the deterioration of the family. Within the authorÕs intentionally limited scope, this is an excellent study, but one should be cautious about generalizing.

This study deals with Universal Values and Muslim Democracy. This essay draws upon speeches that he gave at the New York Democ- racy Forum in December 2005 and the Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy in Istanbul in April 2006. The emergence of Muslim democracies is something significant and worthy of our attention. Yet with the clear exceptions of Indonesia and Turkey, the Muslim world today is a place where autocracies and dictatorships of various shades and degrees continue their parasitic hold on the people, gnawing away at their newfound freedoms. It concludes that the human desire to be free and to lead a dignified life is universal. So is the abhorrence of despotism and oppression. These are passions that motivate not only Muslims but people from all civilizations.
