Orifice flow at high Knudsen numbers

Several interesting features of the flow field in free-molecule flow through an orifice are discussed. An estimate is then made of the deviation of the mass flow $\dot{m}$ through the orifice from its limiting free-molecule value $\dot{m}$ for small departures from the limit. Using an iteration method proposed by Willis, it is shown that this deviation is of the first order in ε, the inverse Knudsen number, defined as the ratio of the radius of the hole to the mean free path in the gas at upstream infinity. An estimate of the coefficient is obtained making some reasonable assumptions about the three-dimensional nature of the flow, and the value so derived, giving $\dot{m}=\dot{m}(1+0.25\epsi)$, shows fair agreement with the measurements of Liepmann. It appears that ‘nearly’ free-molecular conditions prevail up to ε ∼ 1.0.

The present work introduces an analysis of the measurement and model effects that exist in monopile scour protection experiments with repeated small scale tests. The damage erosion is calculated using the three dimensional global damage number S3D and subarea damage number S3D,i. Results show that the standard deviation of the global damage number σ(S3D)=0.257 and is approximately 20% of the mean S3D, and the standard deviation of the subarea damage number σ(S3D,i)=0.42 which can be up to 33% of the mean S3D. The irreproducible maximum wave height, chaotic flow field and non-repeatable armour layer construction are regarded as the main reasons for the occurrence of strong model effects. The measurement effects are limited to σ(S3D)=0.039 and σ(S3D,i)=0.083, which are minor compared to the model effects.

This paper reports numerical predictions and measurements of the flow field in a stepped labyrinth seal. The theoretical work and the experimental investigations were successfully combined to gain a comprehensive understanding of the flow patterns existing in such elements. In order to identify the influence of the honeycomb structure, a smooth stator as well as a seal configuration with a honeycomb facing mounted on the stator wall were investigated. The seal geometry is representative of typical three-step labyrinth seals of modern aero engines. The flow field was predicted using a commercial finite volume code with the standard k-ε turbulence model. The computational grid includes the basic seal geometry as well as the three-dimensional honeycomb structures.

Quasi three dimensional blade-to-blade solutions for stators and rotors of turbomachines are obtained using the Streamline Curvature Method (SLCM). The first-order velocity gradient equation of the SLCM, traditionally solved for the velocity field, is reformulated as a second-order elliptic differential equation and employed in tracing the streamtubes throughout the flow field. The equation of continuity is then used to calculate the velocity. The present method has the following advantages. First, it preserves the ellipticity of the flow field in the solution of the second-order velocity gradient equation. Second, it eliminates the need for curve fitting and strong smoothing under-relaxation in the classical SLCM. Third, the prediction of the stagnation streamlines is a straightforward matter which does not complicate the present procedure. Finally, body-fitted curvilinear coordinates (streamlines and orthogonals or quasi-orthogonals) are naturally generated in the method. Numerical solutions are obtained for inviscid incompressible flow in rotating and non-rotating passages and the results are compared with experimental data.

The corner wall jet is similar to the standard three-dimensional wall jet with the exception that one half of the surface has been rotated counter-clockwise by 90 degrees. The corner wall jet investigated here is formed using a long round pipe with a Reynolds number of 159,000. Contours of the mean and turbulent flow field were measured using hot-wire anemometry. The results indicate that the ratio of lateral to vertical growth in the corner wall jet is approximately half of that in a standard turbulent three-dimensional wall jet.

Three-dimensional turbulent flow through the impeller passage of a model mixed-flow pump has been simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with an improved κ-ɛ model. The standard κ-ɛ model was found to be unsatisfactory for solving the off-design impeller flow and a converged solution could not be obtained at 49 per cent design flowrate. After careful analysis, it was decided to modify the standard κ-ɛ model by including the extra rates of strain due to the acceleration of impeller rotation and geometrical curvature and removing the mathematical ill-posedness between the mean flow turbulence modelling and the logarithmic wall function.

An experimental study of a steady, incompressible, three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer approaching separation is reported. The flow field external to the boundary layer was deflected laterally by turning vanes so that streamwise flow deceleration occurred simultaneous with cross-flow acceleration. At 21 stations profiles of the mean-velocity components and of the six Reynolds stresses were measured with single- and X-hot-wire probes, which were rotatable around their longitudinal axes. The calibration of the hot wires with respect to magnitude and direction of the velocity vector as well as the method of evaluating the Reynolds stresses from the measured data are described in a separate paper (Müller 1982, hereinafter referred to as II). At each measuring station the wall shear stress was inferred from a Preston-tube measurement as well as from a Clauser chart. With the measured profiles of the mean velocities and of the Reynolds stresses several assumptions used for turbulence modelling were checked for their validity in this flow. For example, eddy viscosities for both tangential directions and the corresponding mixing lengths as well as the ratio of resultant turbulent shear stress to turbulent kinetic energy were derived from the data.

A frequency domain linearized unsteady aerodynamic analysis is presented for three-dimensional unsteady vortical flows around a cascade of loaded airfoils. The analysis fully accounts for the distortion of the impinging vortical disturbances by the mean flow. The entire unsteady flow field is calculated in response to upstream three-dimensional harmonic disturbances. Numerical results are presented for two standard cascade configurations representing turbine and compressor bladings for a reduced frequency range from 0.1 to 5. Results show that the upstream gust conditions and blade sweep strongly affect the unsteady blade response.
